Whale watching serves as my substitute for diving at this point. I joined Westport Seabirds for their last weekend trips of the season. On Saturday, I immediately identified a spout in the distance as a fin whale. Of course, I was wrong. Another observer on the boat, Jordan Roderick, managed to get the photo below, which the real whale experts determined was a Blue Whale. My first sighting of a blue in Washington waters.

On Sunday we encountered a pod of Humpback Whales. A few pictures doesn't communicate the experience, to see and hear blows in all directions. Seventeen whales in all.

This one seems battle scarred. Notice the ends missing off both tips.

Coming home on Monday, orca were sighted on the ferry and two gray whales were feeding in front of my house. I include this picture of a blue shark which was swimming around the boat. It has nothing to do with whales, but still interests me.
