Re: Divers face long-term health impact from COVID-19

You didn't have COVID in December in WA: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1249414291297464321.html Everyone who reports having had "COVID" in December typically reports the symptoms of bad influenza, bronchitis and pneumonia. And it was a bad season due to two waves of influenza, H3N2 an...

Re: diving in current

I did hit a case one time where there was bottom current and no surface current which was at Edmonds UW Park. Current swirling off the jetty was getting pushed out and down and we were swimming into it along the bottom to get back to shore and fighting it the whole way, but pop to the surface and it...

By that logic the entire economic activity of the Earth is just "local economic churn" that doesn't contribute to the Earth's overall economy.

Re: Search for missing diver at Cove II

The instructor said he signaled for everyone to come up and all three signaled back that they understood, but only two divers came up and the third was not visible. The instructor called 911 and as Seattle fire personnel were on their way, other divers searched for the students. I'm guessing that i...

Re: Altitude change

A lot of dive computers have an altitude function, check to see if you can set it for your current elevation. I'd agree with the suggestion made by 60south to plan and execute it like it was at 5,325ft instead of 3,012ft Realistically that shouldn't matter much since you'll essentially be doing a &...

Re: DUI XM450 Undergarment Feedback

I dive XM450s and thinsulate booties, they work fine for me. Unfortunately I've never tried a wheezle. I trust thinsulate though, and wouldn't trust anything else. I'd go Argon/Vest/CCR before switching off thinsulate. In summertime the XM450 pretty much doesn't get cold unless I'm literally doing n...

Re: Thoughts about this? (hood canal/the knuckle)

What is really disturbing is where the house is and if they've got an overloaded septic tank then they're all contributing to killing the same dive site that they're diving.

Re: Advice needed for Weight Training for Scuba

I have already said that weighing less and being in good condition SHOULD improve SAC, my impressions watching other divers lead me to believe there are other things that are much more important. We need a guinea pig. Should be a very experienced diver so they are not improving their air consumptio...

Re: WTB or rent Tech gear

Think that was fundies back in 2008 or 2009 and we were threatening to put Bob Sherwood in them since he loves double-Al80s so much (the only double tanks that I hate worse than double-72s for diving up here) LP85s are good, I love my set, just a bit light though so you'll probably need a bigger v-w...

Re: Advice needed for Weight Training for Scuba

Also if you think that overweight people have lower resting metabolic rates, that is also entirely incorrect and is now considered a myth, e.g.: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9467223 "It was shown that overweight men and women have increased resting metabolic rate as well as increased tota...

Re: Advice needed for Weight Training for Scuba

Train train train on cardio and fitness and you've increased your O2 consumption. You keep arguing this but you're just wrong. For the same amount of work you consume the same amount of O2 and expel the same amount of CO2, you don't increase your O2 consumption. By increasing your cardio fitness yo...

Re: WTB or rent Tech gear

just make certain to never, ever close your isolator (outside of training), and check 3 or 4 times that all 3 of your valves are open before you're actually diving. and turn your valves all the way open and don't do the quarter turn back thing. you'll have 3 valves trying to kill you instead of 1 va...

Re: WTB or rent Tech gear

Without any sort of training, cert, or even experience with them, I cant see any shop that would rent them to you. I owned my own doubles + doubles wing before I had any formal training on them. There's a bit of a catch-22 here. The reality is that people buy/borrow/rent doubles to dive them for aw...

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25479992 Abstract Firefighting is a hazardous task associated with a heavy workload where task duration may be limited by air cylinder capacity. Increased fitness may lead to better air ventilation efficiency and task duration at a given heavy work intensity. This ...

Re: Advice needed for Weight Training for Scuba

Also I have enough passing medical knowledge of cardio fitness and VO2 to know that you're both completely wrong from a medical perspective as well. Sorry, but fitness raises SAC plain and simple. No way to get around the basic facts of metabolism. Now, you could argue that weight loss will result ...

Re: Advice needed for Weight Training for Scuba

Lamont, I would have no doubt you are right except for my 30 years of diving with big/fat people who were the last ones back on the boat and diving with tiny fit people who often use more air than me. All things being equal, a small fit person will use less air than a large, unfit person, but thing...

Re: Advice needed for Weight Training for Scuba

I speak from my own personal experience backed up by cave diving where your SAC rate translates directly into how far you can get into cave. Also from dropping from 230 down to 190. At my most fit and light and cardio conditioned, I've been able to impress my cave instructors with how much we've bee...
