Re: Drift Diving Port Townsend

Does anybody ever dive the kelp beds out off of Ft. Warden? Seems like it would be an interesting, if not very deep, dive. Ya. There's a channel of sorts at the north end of the park. Shore access is difficult; we used sit-on-top kayaks. It's a beautiful dive, if you can get there. Lots of kelp, bi...

Re: Need a dive buddy

.... How is night diving? .... Dark .... HMMM.... is night diving difficult here? ... Yes, it can be. What kind of light do you have? At high noon in the middle of summer diving in puget sound below 25' can be a "night" dive depending on the amount of algae in bloom. Always bring a light.

I'm aiming to make it to this one!

I've never done Sund rock. Bring the scooter, or leave it at home? Anyone else thinking about scootering it?

I'll be bringing a flat of cookies.

I agree, most spots I've dove down there are mudflats, and the spot you're talking about is pretty shallow. Sooner or later I will find a spot around there worth diving twice!

Re: Local drysuit alteration/repair

+1 for what Ross said. Go to lighthouse and buy the contact cement, shove some soup cans or PVC pipe in the sleeves and glue them on. Turn around time is a day. It's really not hard to do, and as Ross points out, learning to repair your own gear will pay dividends down the road.

Re: Anyone ever dive Allyn?

Nope, but I can tell you what you will see.... Mud. Lots and lots of mud. If you ever see it at a -3 tide, the only water left is on the east side of the bay, between the park and there, mud. There has to be good diving in that area somewhere. When I finally find it, I'll make sure and post somethin...

Re: Is steel really that big of a dfference for weight?

2# less between an al80 and lp72 is about right. Lp72s aren't on that chart since they haven't been made in 3 decades. My LP72's seem to be about neutral when "emtpy", vs the 80's I had that were 4lbs positive. YMMV on LP72's though as there is a bit of variability depending on who made t...

This book covers all the theory stuff about the physiology of diving at altitude, though it's not an easy read - https://www.amazon.com/Diving-Above-Sea-Level-Diversification/dp/0941332306 When I looked a few years ago there weren't many classes available for altitude diving locally, and non from an...

Re: Cressi stuff for OW cert?

I have been diving a Cressi mask for about 6 years. I LOVE it as it fits my face. Also have broken some clips on it and Cressi sent me repair packages via mail so its good as new. We need fins with BIG pockets here in the cold water as you tend to have rockboots, or thick ass neoprene boots. I can ...

Re: Harstine Island/Jarrell Cove State Park

Monk and I tried Harstine Island state park this last weekend. Lots and lots of sand. We then did a site on the east side of pickering passage that I thought looked interesting. Aside from the lady on shore yelling at us because she thought we were stealing her geoducks, it was pretty boring...

South Sound/Hood canal 7/15 or 7/16?

Anybody diving hood canal or other points south that wouldn't mind a tag along this weekend?

It sounds like my scooter won't be back in time for this weekend, so I'll be kicking, but it would be good to get out to a site I haven't been to before, Ocotpus hole, sund rock, other?

Re: Anyone thinking about diving for crab?

The reason i was thinking people with a little less dives is because without all the experience i wouldn't wanna bring any experienced person "down to my level". That was my big concern. Please don't think like this. We were all new once, and we all benefited from experienced divers takin...

You can just patch the pinhole with aquaseal. If the hole is near the dump valve you can get it from the inside. I'm curious, did DSS agree to patch it? In the past Tobin has refused to patch a wing.

Re: Harstine Island/Jarrell Cove State Park

The reef north of McMicken island is in very deep water as far as I can tell, 140ft-ish. Its not within the charted fish haven area (which looked pretty barren to me when I mowed it with the depth sounder) I have dove around Squaxin island (between Squaxin and Harstine) years ago but it was boring ...

Re: Harstine Island/Jarrell Cove State Park

I haven't dived in Jarrell cove. I would probably pass on it, based on the fact that the vis in there is pretty much 0 most of the year, and the number of boats in and out constantly. The east side of the island, around McMicken state park (http://parks.state.wa.us/545/McMicken-Island ) state park h...

Re: Repair my suit or get a used one?

Fixing the suit is the best option. You can easily do the neck seal yourself. Switch to a neoprene seal, they last longer. I don't know what the back zip fusions look like, is it a straight zipper, or is it like the front zips where it's shaped like a U? If it's relatively straight, go tizip. You ca...

The walls at Muk are constantly changing. I've done dives where it was very much what you describe, and ones where it is one continuous wall, up to 10' top to bottom. The currents will bring the wall back.
