Re: Sculpin ID help please

Thanks Greg. I did look at the scorpionfishes too but only looked at the photo on the California Scorpionfish so I did not notice they have numerous barbels on the head. I kept looking at the Stone Scorpionfish but the barbels are supposed to be under the mouth not on top. BTW that is one scary look...

Sculpin ID help please

Found this guy at San Clemente Island, CA. I'd say it was 6-10 in long. I can't find anything in my ID book that looks like this one. Perhaps it is a juvenile of a larger sculpin?

Re: Please help ID this crab

Well now, upside down would explain a lot of things  . Like why the "carapace" is segmented, and why it's claws are on the bottom and why it let me take so many photos without it running away. But then, when it didn't run off I considered if it might be dead and saw it moving it's...

Please help ID this crab

I don't think I've ever seen this one before. The only crab ID book I have is Gotshall and it doesn't have anything with a carapace that is segmented like this. (I'm waiting for Christmas to get my Jensen Crab and Shrimp ID book). I took this in Northern California at Russian Gulch State Park in Men...

Re: What Have These Guys Been Eating???

I saw a Dirona albolineata today who had insides that looked a lot like your first photo. I don't think it was quite as dark inside as yours but close. I assumed it was just it's organs. It had it's back to me and I had my wide angle on at the time so I didn't bother to take it's photo.

Re: Sculpin IDs please

Ahh, now I get it :smt038 ! I was trying to make the oblique line all the way from the start of the scales at the front of the fish to the back end of the fish. Couldn't figure out how you would count that as the scales don't seem to line up that way #-o . Thanks a lot for your help in my understand...

Re: Sculpin IDs please

So, is that oblique line the ridge like line on some fishes that often has thread like extensions off of it like in this photo? Or is it just part of the other scales?

(Hopefully this is a snubnose 'cause that's the only ID I can find to fit it)

Re: Sculpin IDs please

Thanks Greg. I didn't figure the scales were going to be sharp enough to count. Even in my RAW image they are not any sharper. For future information, how are scales counted? Are the "rows" from front to back or top to bottom? In the Humann/Deloach book it talks about "the longest obl...

Re: Sculpin IDs please

Thanks Greg. The length of the snout was one thing that did not seem quite right to me either when looking at photos of the scalyheads. I've only got Humann's fish book to look at. You may have been able to tell by the photos but one thing about the first one was it was rather large compared to the ...

Re: Sculpin IDs please

So Greg, are you saying that the Coralline may have noticible cirri between and behind the eyes unlike previously thought? You do know this fish was in CA not WA right? Also, what about the big yellow spot on the dorsal fin. Is that not more like a scalyhead? I'm confused as to what would make the f...

Sculpin IDs please

I have a couple of Sculpins from San Miguel Channel Island, CA. The first I'm pretty sure is a Female Scalyhead but I'd like comformation. N2009.09.10-30.jpg N2009.09.10-34.jpg The second has me more stumped. I was acutally photographing the Hiltons Nudi and never saw the fish. All of my other photo...

Re: Whidbey Island Critters

I don't know about this one. Some of the muck which is playing a havoc with our visibility seems to be coming from the Bull Kelp. Long and short stringy snot.. Maybe part of the reproduction cycle? Any ideas ? http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/Honza-01/71509BullkelpmuckS.jpg We did a bull kel...

Re: Do you own a crushed neoprene dry suit?

Janna, what are the Heavy Duty bottleneck style wrist seals? Is that latex or neoprene? Glad to hear you are happy with it that is encouraging. With all the repairs you have done you are making me even sadder that my Mobbys has gotten to tight. Bought mine in 2002 and have about 400 dives on it. The...

Re: Do you own a crushed neoprene dry suit?

Mobby’s is no longer available so, I have to find a replacement product. Actually, Mobby's bought Mares. Their products are now sold and serviced through Mares. Before the purchase there was a bit of a blackout period in the US, but Mobby's remained active and popular in Europe/Asia. They're back n...

Do you own a crushed neoprene dry suit?

I love my Mobby’s compressed neoprene dry suit but it is getting too small and too stiff after 7 years diving with it. Mobby’s is no longer available so, I have to find a replacement product. I'm looking at Bare's CD4 Pro Dry suit. Can't find any reviews of it and can't find anyone in my area that h...

Does retraction cause the yellow color or would it stay yellow even if it extended it's tentacles?
If a small jelly has the red dots can I safely assume it is a Red Eye Medusa?

Re: Jelly ID please

Wow, thanks for all of the compliments. I should admit it took quite a bit of editing to get it looking good. I'm surprised it is the Red Eye Medusa. I was told the photo below is a Red Eye Medusa. The only thing I see the same between the two is their size and the red dots. Do they really vary that...

Re: New from Northern California

Thanks again! I think our biggest problem was we dove mid week when the GPOs and the Wolfies were off working some place :smt024 rather than at home. Actually, the mid-week dive resulted in the Captain bringing a rather new dive master to show us around who had not learned the hiding places well yet...
