Re: Need al 80's

I don't know if you ever get down to the Oregon coast, but the owner of Doug's Diving in Garibaldi (Tillamook Bay) is selling off a bunch of AL80's for $50 each. I don't know anything about them, just saw that he had his commercial work boat and a bunch of 80's for sale on CL.

Re: Newport 3rd Finger 6/17/2012

Sorry for the late reply; I dove there on 6/5 and saw hundreds of baby jellies. I'm not good at identifying jellies (I've tried to avoid them ever since my first Lion's Mane mustache at Hood Canal), but they were everywhere. our vis was about like yours, and the tide sure changed quickly (no actual ...

Re: Next dive trip

I'm dying to dive around the WW2 planes in Truk someday, but the closest I've come so far is a fairly little-known WW2 plane in Maui called the Helldiver. B&B Scuba is the only operator I know of that dives it. It is a trainer plane that crashed during the war and was discovered recently by fish...

Re: Orcas at Orford

That's awesome! I've always meant to dive that spot, but my last two trips down there were family vacations without dive gear. Last time I was there, the guys coming out said there was a great white right in that little cove.

Any idea if this would work with a Sea & Sea camera (dx-750g)? I'm very interested if the fiberoptic cable will install and sync up right. Google hasn't helped me yet.

Re: Got called an idiot for selling my pony!

I don't think you're an idiot, but I'm planning to buy a pony soon. Our visibility in the bays on the Oregon coast is so poor that we often end up "Same Ocean" diving. We try to keep an idea where each other are, but if we separate by more than a few feet to hunt, chase crabs, or look at s...

Re: Diving With Or Without A Weight Belt?

Here's my problem: I have two BPW setups, but I really like the one with a "comfort harness" which doesn't have an easy way to attach weight pockets. If I put all of my weight into the DUI harness (30# when using AL tanks; slightly less with my lp95's), it causes problems for boat dives o...

Re: Diving With Or Without A Weight Belt?

My answer leads to a challenge that I'm facing. I started with a weight belt, but my belly / waist are bigger than my butt, so It fell down a lot. I added shoulder straps to the belt, but they made it exremely hard to ditch if necessary (buckles were under BCD). I later switched to a Black Diamond B...

Re: Netarts 14Apr12

Yuk! The tides are not in your favor. I'd plan on an early splash and get out before the outgoing tide cranks up. Something you might consider is to bring a non-diver to let you out at the upper end and drift to where you want out at - I've never done it but know others have. http://www.protides.co...

Re: Logging dives?

As a newbie (26 now) I am still logging them, recording info on gear as well as events I want to remember later (which might be technical info on weights/trim/etc., or something really cool I saw, or whatever). I always try to get signatures from somebody, just 'cuz. And now I have some actual stic...

Re: Netarts 14Apr12

I was there Saturday and the viz looked decent. I was wishing I had my gear with me. There are a few crabs around as well (not a ton, but Netarts doesn't have as much fresh water as the other bays, so they don't all flush to sea with the rains). I don't think I can make the 14th, but I'll get in tou...

Re: Oceanside, Garibaldi, Tillamook Bay Snorkeling

Nice. Thank you for sharing. I'll have to take a swim at Jetty Lagoon to see what I can see. I bet there's good crabbing there, but I don't know what else is there (depends how deep it is along any rocky areas. The area you call Twin Arch Rocks is what we've always called the Three Graces. I need to...

I'm sitting at work right now wondering how to mount a backup light to the front of my speargun. All you had to do was ask..... Let me know if you really want to do something like this. I'd love too. Maybe it would be possible to have a remote switch that I can activate from near the trigger. I hav...

Re: Oceanside, Garibaldi, Tillamook Bay Snorkeling

Sounds awesome. I'm curious to know where the spot at the mouth of the Columbia is. Me too! I've thought about jumping in along the breakwater inside the Hammond Basin, but I haven't found anywhere else down there that I'd be comfortable diving yet (I've thought about trying a live-boat dive to see...

Re: Faber tank working pressure

My impression, backed up by threads like this http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/tanks-valves-bands/176284-faber-hp-100-questions.html, is that for the rated volume, you do need to fill to the "plus" pressure (3498). This has been the case for all the tanks I've seen except one. I have a st...

Out Lately?

Wow, no responses on the Oregon page in well over a month... anyone diving? My buddies don't get excited until the lings are easy pickings along the jetties in March / April, but I just want to get wet. The crab must be in Netarts? Please encourage me to service my regs and get ready to dive again. ...

Re: WTB: SS Backplate OMS or Halcyon

I have both. I'm probably willing to sell the H plate (I've been bouncing back and forth, but I think I've decided to keep the OMS harness system and the Halcyon wing). I can sell the plate alone or complete with webbing, buckles, and H ditchable weight pockets. I also have a spare Dive-rite single...
