Re: Not too late to swim with kokanee

That's incredible. I wonder what other lakes offer the same views that are closer to the Portland area?

Re: Central Oregon Diving & Divers

The Deschutes River clean up has, in the past been an organized event. I've always relied on a friend in Bend to keep me informed. There is a dive store there that I believe coordinates with other organizations for the cleanup, but I can't think of the name of it for the life of me. The Scout Lake c...

Re: Central Oregon Diving & Divers

I've always enjoyed the Deschutes Cleanup. I didn't go last year because it was on a Friday and those are hard days for me to get off from work. I've also dove Scout Lake as a cleanup effort and I posted a location report on the appropriate forum about it. I think that the diving community needs to ...

[quote="lavachickie"The former can become the latter by simply allowing themselves to be chilly now and then. Don't run to "fix" it, just be with it. Work through it. I'm not suggesting you sit in a tub full of icewater until you get hypothermia. I'm just saying move the bar a bi...

I had no idea that they were this far north. Where abouts can they be found in Netarts? Along the inshore wall or the marina jetty?

Newport 3rd Finger 6/17/2012

Dove the third finger, on the ocean side. Viz wasn't all that bad (6-8 feet). There wasn't the "normal" amount of life though. I saw only about half the sea stars and maybe a dozen fish. Not really sure why... I did see two things that I had never seen before. The first was a small (~5 cm)...

Re: Yaquina Bay fingers

Thanks for the summary! I've dove the 3rd finger a lot because it is the easiest to get at with a generous staging area. I've heard that the 1st finger is crawling with life (mostly fish, so maybe swimming with life? :) ) at high tide. I guess the only way to find out for sure is to get out there an...

Re: Yaquina Bay fingers

I have dove the fingers on several occasions and I am never really certain which finger is which. Do you normally count them from the bay out to sea or the other way around? The third finger is obvious since it is the same either way but when people mention the fourth or first, I am never really sur...

If you don't mind divulging your secret spots in Oceanside, Garibaldi, and Tillamook I know that I for one would appreciate it. Re: Squid at Alki Junkyard

It is most likely not from the mouth, but instead from the siphon. It point in the same direction at the tentacles and arms. It is the area that the jet of water comes shooting out of in a threat response.

Re: Oregon triton aka Puget Sound whelk

One thing that I have found (it may not apply here) is that as soon as I learn to identify something (specific animal or plant) I start seeing it everywhere. I don't know if everyone else is the same but I just seem to miss things until I know how to look for them!

Re: Chitons can see?

I was reading about this yesterday. Absolutely fascinating how things evolved to adapt. What's better if you never have to focus on something? Good, depth perceiving eyes that focus in only one direction like we have? Hundreds of eyes that are focus poor but allow them to see all around without comp...

I would love to know how this goes. I've always been curious about that little cove as we drove by.

I have to agree that it looks like the only dry entrance that won't be rappelled would be private. If anyone gets to be friends with the person on the end of McDonald, let all of us know.

Interesting that you should mention that a weight integrated solution is bad for your back because it is what cured my backaches. I used to dive with a belt and by the end of a dive, my back would hurt so bad I would be dieing over the next few days. I dove a weight integrated back inflate (which I ...

Re: Crabbing in Oregon

Red Rock tastes better IMO. To get around the whole baiting issue, I would bait up some rings and have someone on shore "tend" them with a shellfish license. You could then get them concentrated and be legal. The regs specifically state that it is illegal to take, "... or attempting t...

Re: Winter Diving

I guess there in lies the problem: I don't dive dry. I have a wetsuit (semi-dry, but if you get wet, it's still a wetsuit) and I would like to dive dry, but I can't afford one at the moment. Used isn't really an option for me because I am 6'3" and 180 lbs. You can dive wet in winter. Just be a...
