I think both of you got great pics of the candies. I'm envious. Thanks for posting.

Re: The piling al Mukilteo
I just got out of the water with Morningdiverbob. The piling has toppled over and rests atop the satellite dish. Lots of big rockfish though. Also lings, GPO under the boat, and two wolf eels in shallower water. Lousy vis, great dive.

Kriss: I'm with spatman, I'm glad you're ok. Since I'm hoping to dive with you someday, I think you should follow LCF's advice. Doctor knows best. Again, thankful you're well.

Re: "What is dangerous" - in scuba diving ??
Spatman: Forgive me for not getting the joke. Sometimes I get weary of people telling me that their way is the only way to dive despite evidence to the contrary. The most important piece of gear is between your ears. No amount of equipment will compensate for poor judgement. I'm old enough to know I...

Jan: Fascinating stuff. I look forward to each installment. It reminds me of my time on Amchitka Island in the Aleutians. This is where we conducted our last nuclear tests. The blast craters, amid what is essentially arctic tundra, had filled with water and it was covered with ducks, loons, and othe...

Re: "What is dangerous" - in scuba diving ??
you guys are forgetting two of the most dangerous things related to PNW diving: snorkels and splitfins. stay away from both, and you'll be fine. Spatman: In over 50 years of diving I have heard all of the absolutes. I have used both snorkels and splifins (borrowed) and have no problems with either....

Bob: Thanks for the posting. I saw Straight Arrow heading out and wondered. Say hello to Uncle Pug and Shane for me. Your dives look wonderful. Our dives at Keystone weren't much warmer. Air temp 28 and water 42. We were both sporting wet gloves. I thought it hilarious as we struggled with the clips...

Jenn: You are awesome. For me, I turned 66, 60 dives, dived in Fiji, Maui, Lanai, Monterey, 3 trips to British Columbia, and froze my tail off at Keystone today. But hey, I'm still doing it. Happy New Year. Life is good.

Bob: I agree that Northwest Island is a marvelous dive. I have a hard time convincing many people to do the swim. I have been accused of being wildly reckless for even suggesting it. I don't have a scooter (or a snowmobile or pwc; I do have snowshoes, kayak, and fins). For me, the trip to the dive s...

I also found a knife - in good condition - near the old fuel pier. I'd be glad to return it to the owner. I know it's not Steve King's knife. - Curt

Re: critter musings-to reef or not to reef....
I believe the evidence shows that nature flourishes best when left undisturbed. That said, many enclaves on land are established with duck ponds for waterfowl, nest boxes, and other enhancements to draw wildlife to a given area for we humans to watch. This is not about preserving wildlife, but to cr...

Re: Now I know why no one Freedives here
I'd be willing to work the Olympia area yacht clubs, boat stores and marinas. I'm sure I could recruit some others. Great ideas folks... I presented a short session on dive flags at my yacht club. They were all aware of the red and white flag but very few Knew of the alpha flag which is the only on...

Re: The piling al Mukilteo
I swam out to the boatwreck today and the piling is tilted over at 45 degrees (about, I didn't measure it). I suspect that a couple more changes of tide will bring it to rest on the bottom.

Re: newbie question on diving gear???
I love diving, and life, because I learn something new about them each day. fmerkel's statement about earplugs is new to me. Our dive club instructor (pre-certification days), was adamant. In my first cert class in 1963 (courtesy US Navy), this was repeated. I have continued to take courses: NASDS, ...

Instead of getting a booth at the boat show, how about distributing material from another booth, such as Coast Guard Auxillary, Power Squadron, or one of the dive shop booths? All of these have an interest in boating safety.

Re: The piling al Mukilteo
Yes. The piling was buried into the bottom at 100 ft depth and sticking up about 15 ft from the bottom. The top of the piling is far below the surface so I deduced that it had to be erected underwater. I sink pilings by hand in front of my home, so I have an idea of what is involved. A major effort.

The piling al Mukilteo
I noticed a piling sticking up off the bottom near the satellite dish on the way to the sunken boat out from the T-dock. I have been there a lot and had not seen it before. To see a piling rising from the bottom at 100 ft depth is unusual to say the least. Does anybody know the story? Other divers s...

Re: newbie question on diving gear???
Youy cert class will answer all of these questions. 1. The wet suit holds the water next to your skin so that it doesn't flow so that your body heat can warm it up. The thicker the suit, the thicker the insulation. 2. A dry suit keeps the water off so that you are insulated either with a layer of ai...

Re: Dive Bouy Manners
My reading of rule 27, concerning the alpha flag, makes no mention of a 12 meter minimum. I don't have the rules in front of me but my memory is that the alpha flag is required when the vessel is too small to display the other signals. Am I in error? My earlier comments about buoy courtesy applies t...

Re: Dive Bouy Manners
I was a customer on a dive charter which moored to a buoy. My partner, Steve, and I enjoyed a spectacular dive: seals, sea lions, octopus, wolf eels, grunt sculpin... We hung out to use all of the air in our tank and ascended the mooring line on the buoy. Finding another dive charter boat on the buo...

Janna has some good suggestions. Since I am always traveling by sailboat, these places seem to me to be farther from Nanimo than they are. Andy Lamb is a legend, and author of fish id books. He is equally good at finding and identifying inverts. Thetis Island is close to Porlier Pass, a signature di...
