Re: How do you secure and protect your camera?

Seems like the $35 lanyard is still flimsy. It protects against a catastrophic failure where the plastic coil breaks, but it's still got the same risks with snap bolt opening or the little nylon loop breaking. I don't trust anything (snap bolt, carabiner, etc) that doesn't have a locking mechanism. ...

How do you secure and protect your camera?

Curious as to how everyone secures their camera when diving. Please include considerations for all activities from before entering the water through getting out of the water. What prompted this topic is a recent failure of my "system" where a Trident coil lanyard tying the camera to my BCD...

Ahh, I think you're right on the amphipod. This was Porpoise Bay in Jan 2015.

Re: Family trip to Philippines

Puerto Galera isn't just muck diving, but the most exciting things there do come in smaller packages. There's a bay that's muck, but the rest are reefs, canyons, walls, and wrecks. None of the reefs in Phillipines will be that great, save for Tubbataha. Same thing goes for big pelagics (hit or miss ...

Re: No-knees Dive Training

Doesn't the current PADI cirriculum already require (may be too strong of a word) that the students not touch the bottom on a five point descent? I think the con here is that this level of control is relatively difficult to achieve and poses yet another task-loading encumbrance on students trying to...

Re: Advice needed for Weight Training for Scuba

Train train train on cardio and fitness and you've increased your O2 consumption. You keep arguing this but you're just wrong. Nope, you're the one in the wrong on this. More fitness is higher oxygen consumption and more CO2 production and greater urge to breathe. Nobody is arguing this as it's sim...

Re: Advice needed for Weight Training for Scuba

Wow, never thought cave diving is like a firefighter's SWC. Sounds like a great workout. :nutty: In any case, your excerpt below entirely misses the point. It demonstrates nothing other than perhaps shorter periods of exertion on the surface result in less air consumption. But again, that much shoul...

Also I have enough passing medical knowledge of cardio fitness and VO2 to know that you're both completely wrong from a medical perspective as well. Sorry, but fitness raises SAC plain and simple. No way to get around the basic facts of metabolism. Now, you could argue that weight loss will result ...

Re: Advice needed for Weight Training for Scuba

I speak from my own personal experience. I consider myself very fit and work out 5+ times a week involving both cardio and weights. I also participate in very physically demanding activities and sports. There's no question that when your body and mind are used to consuming air at very high rates, th...

Re: Advice needed for Weight Training for Scuba

Everything revolves around the core, so work on that. Having good core strength and stability is the difference between flailing underwater to get "right" versus a smooth, intentional fin movement. On gear I have to agree it's more ergonomics. Doesn't matter how strong you are, you can eas...

Re: Travel Bag

I use a gear bag similar to costco's. Think it was an old hockey gear bag. Tough but soft, unpadded outer shell. I've found that 2 wheels can be a struggle. With 2 backpacks full of camera gear and 2 checked bags, having to pick up one side of a 2-wheeled bag requires some endurance especially throu...

There's always something to learn. In nearly a decade of diving, I'm still learning every time I participate in diving in some way. Talk with the instructors - the good ones will work with you and tailor the experience and education. Also, some dive operators can be sticklers about certifications. T...

Re: Two Mid-range Strobes or One Big Boy?

In my opinion, the right camera setup captures a lot more clarity than is observed with the naked eye. Here's a few examples, all taken in typical vis. Re: Two Mid-range Strobes or One Big Boy?

How sure are you about shooting mostly macro? Two DS-51s would be fine for mostly macro, but that'll really limit your shooting options on a variety of dives both locally and around the globe. Personally I suffer from fear of missing out, so I'd go with the more flexible option: Get one DS160 and sa...

Re: Smash and Grab Theft!

The perps in my case turned out to be a couple of drug addicts. They broke into several cars that morning and stole enough value to be a felony. The detective on my case did get their names and IDs from the pawn shop, but the prosecutor declined to press charges. Apparently, this pair was already on...

Re: Smash and Grab Theft!

Same thing happened to me a few years ago. I found my stuff on Ebay. I'd recommend search for it on eBay in approximately 20-25 days. Look at the advanced search options to narrow the search down, for example selling location WA, OR, or ID, etc. I recall there was some way to save the search paramet...

Re: Diopter for SLR

Thanks and great pics! Here's a question - how practical is using a diopter with a big underwater housing? 5Dmk2 and a 100mm is exactly what I shoot. Occasionally I'll find myself wanting to get closer than the MFD, along with the room to do so, but many other times I can't really get closer. I gues...

Re: Diopter for SLR

Well, there's no difference in max "zoom" between 60mm vs 100mm, or any focal length for macro. You always end up at 1:1 max magnification for FF sensors (more for crop at pixel level). The advantage with a longer length lens is you get to 1:1 at a longer distance from subject. As for high...

Diopter for SLR

What's your experience with diopters for SLR lenses or UW lens ports? Wet vs dry? Likes or dislikes? Protips in the setup?

I intend to try one on a Canon 100mm macro. I find myself wanting to shoot smaller and smaller stuff, and 1:1 just isn't satisfying the desire anymore :)
