Re: Exploded 50cal

With the struck primer, maybe it was a misfire that later burst in a fire? Hangfire that burst after extraction?

Big Sur

I don't post often, but I lurk here every day; thought I'd share some info about a recent trip from last month as it's right in the wheelhouse for good looking, adventurous cold water divers like us. If you've done a Channel Islands trip, it was probably through Truth Aquatics. You may not know this...

Re: Solar eclipse

Since I'm a diver, I really wanted to experience at least part of the eclipse underwater. As it turns out, Clear Lake was in the path of totality. My underwater time lapse didn't turn out so well, but I did get a halfway decent underwater shot of the post-totality phase. It was an amazing experience...

Re: Poor Eels

Those were slime eels, also know as hagfish. Hard to believe there's actually a fishery for them, but apparently there's a demand in Korea. As to your other question, I know of spearos and anglers who've taken wolf eels but they're not a species anyone goes out of their way for. One comment I heard ...

Re: Scuba fins

I have the Novas, as do most of the people I dive with. It started with one of us, then another would try them, then another, etc. and we were all hooked. I can frog kick, make turns, even put it in reverse in my Novas. One of my buddies has both the regular and Gorilla versions; he uses the Gorilla...

Vancouver Island reef cam

Have you guys (and gulls) seen this? It's strangely addictive, day or night. There's a China RF and a Male Kelp Greenling that seem to be around pretty often- check it out...

Re: Float Arms for Ikelite

I'm a bowhunter, and I noticed that the blocks of foam my local archery shop sells for use in my arrow quiver were pretty similar to what comes in UW photography floats; if anything, it's a little bit more durable. The ones I've installed on my strobe arms have lasted a few years with no signs of de...

Re: Altitude change

I've done several dives at Clear Lake; as I recall it barely meets the criteria for an altitude dive (I could be wrong , however). While everyone is different, taking it easy on the dive, using a generous safety stop, breathing nitrox, and other conservative measures make sense. If you take your tim...

Re: Advice needed for Weight Training for Scuba

One thing that I hear mentioned even less than dive-related strength training is dive-related ergonomics. Laura hit it on the head about injuries related to gear lugging, so take advantage of lifting/ergonomics training that your employer might offer. An important concept to keep in mind is leverage...

Lost light with dive watch at Lobster Shop Wall

Somewhere close to the beach exit at Lobster Shop Wall today my SeaLife light mounted to the top of my camera housing decided to abandon ship. It's black, and readily identifiable by the $20 black and yellow National Geographic dive watch attached to it. I'm not holding out hope for a recovery, but ...

Thanks for the replies. I guess I was wondering if we still needed to aim for slack or if the low exchange means they're diveable for a longer period of time. Sounds like slack only...

Low exchange weekend?

A few of us are coming up from Oregon and thinking about some of the sites around the Narrows- Day Island, Titlow, Fox Island, etc. Although we've never dove these sites, we are experienced divers and are comfortable in challenging conditions. Our take is that they'll probably be diveable until late...

Re: Wavy shore dive exits

Jan- I'm pretty sure I was at the Keystone washing machine that day in 2010 with our dive club- the guys helping the divers out of the water were some combination of me or my two brothers. You're right- a fin was lost, and I think that was about it. To this day, that's my reference point for a rough...

Re: Friday Harbor air fills?

I'm guessing by the response that there are no airfills on the island :) Second question- any recommendations for a place to night dive on SJI? Our party is made up of intermediate to advanced divers, but only a couple of us have been up there. The site doesn't have to be deep or mind blowing- I'd b...
