Re: Diving flags requirements

not less than one meter in height I always hated the vague wording of this. Does this mean the top of the flag must be a meter above the water? Or measured from the bottom of the flag? Or does it mean the flag itself needs to be a meter in size from top to bottom? I've never been able to find offic...

Re: Underwater Communication and Underwater Navigation System

I'd be curious if you or others have had success with this. I've wondered if any of the cheap hobbyist microprocessors on the market would be able to accurately time an ultrasonic ping response to a pair of matched devices on a boat or shore. Two distances to known points and you could estimate a po...

Re: Current corrections

Happy to partner/collaborate and help if I can. I had similar ideas (site specific ml models). Although I've so far been focused on other projects my long term idea was to develop a cheap 3d printed arduino microprocessor device that could be tied to a cinderblock at various sites for a month or so ...

Re: Water Depth Mapping Resource

Although there isn't full coverage across all the Puget Sound there is super high resolution bathymetry available thanks to the NOAA Hydrographic Survey: https://maps.ngdc.noaa.gov/viewers/bathymetry/ Selecting "BAG Color Shaded Relief" will show you the high resolution NOAA Hydrographic S...

Certainly looks like something in the cod family but what specifically I'm not sure; hopefully someone else weighs in. Can really young Walleye Pollock look like this?

Re: Getting back into the water, in July?

Hoping to get my drysuit back from shop sometime this week. I want to be dive ready in advance of the reef.org event at saltwater state park this Saturday and Sunday. Might do a basic dive somewhere easy beforehand to work out kinks. If you want me to ping you so you can join. If available this week...

Re: Save Edmonds Underwater Park & Beach

I should also mention that although they did not vote to approve a study (at least not yet) it seemed to be the direction they were going. They wanted to establish how the project would impact the marine preserve (the biggest non-aesthetic objection besides cost). Curious what everyone's thoughts ar...

Re: Save Edmonds Underwater Park & Beach

I attended. After very long discussion the city council held a vote and decided to suspend the project (for now) noting concerns about the funding source and pushback from the community. They didn't do the public comment part of agenda as a result so not sure if it would have just been a formality o...

Re: Getting back into the water, in July?

Limited to evenings/weekends only or do you dive weekdays too? (when parking is easier) I'm flexible but love slow, shallowish (<80ft) dives where I can look for, survey, and/or photograph the critters. I live in South Bellevue - you by chance a eastside resident? (saw something about Bellevue/Redmo...

Re: Lumpsucker on Fox Island East Wall

Jealous of your pictures. Every one of my lumpsucker encounters involve uncooperative fish in murky and partially obscured locations.

How do you get them to pose and face the camera so nicely? Are there special lumpsucker treats I'm not aware of? :-)

I had a conflict and wasn't able to attend this meeting but curious if others did and there are any updates since then? On the subject of pintos: if you have yet to find one in the wild (like me) point defiance has one in the touch tank of their fancy new aquarium. How often do you get the opportuni...

Re: Happy Nudi New Years

Underwater slugs are super cool. Those boring non-divers dont know what they are missing. King crabs and Jan K are cool too and are always fun sightings on any local dive. I've heard Jan K is listed somewhere in the marine mammals section of several underwater identification books. This unique and h...

Re: How do you secure and protect your camera?

I used to use carabiners also then one day had a buddy who had air issues at 80ft. After an ascent with him grabbing at my bcd to breathe off my octo my camera rig twisted out if the clip and sank out of reach. Offered $1,500 reward and several folks systemstically searched the site over the next we...

Re: Sixgill sightings: database?

Update: More info if interested... I played with the reef.org data some more and warm water temperatures (especially 54F+) and depth (>80ft) both correlate strongly with sixgill sighting frequencies. Perhaps the seasonality seen in the graph above might simply be a reflection of this pattern: they c...

I like playing with this kind of data too and would be happy to help with related database prep, analytics, and/or input form development (if required: I agree with trying to not reproduce the wheel). I suspect there are already several sighting databases we could leverage. I checked the reef.org da...
