Are you guys getting as confused as I am? Let's not post any new ones if we have two (or more) un-ID'd ones outstanding. PLEASE let us know if someone guesses yours correctly and reward us with a photo of the fish! Here's a recap! #1 (me) - Red Irish Lord #2 (Grateful Diver) - Decorated Warbonnet #3...

Sorry to burst your bubbles, cuz I know you're all having GREAT fun with this! :) BUT.... As titillating as it would seem, Sea Stars don't reproduce by direct contact or having big orgies. :) Chances are, what you're seeing here is a bunch of Sea Stars capitalizing on a really good meal! And accordi...

Nothing is planned quite yet - we just got done with two extensive cleanups at Sund Rock in October 2006 and January 2007. There are other sites in Hood Canal that have Ciona, but they are accessible only by boat. :( The Pleasant Harbor Marina is also badly in need of surveying and cleanup from the ...

So, am I disqualified or are tropical fish allowed in this game? Come on, the PNW fish are too easy, especially for those of us who've been through one of Janna's classes. :book: Nice attempt at kissing up, Calvin, but yeah YOU'RE DISQUALIFIED!!! :D For now, let's stick to PNW fish, and when your f...

Yeah, don't misunderstand - when I say currents are 'nice' that day, I mean they're MINOR that day. Very small exchange, good day to dive the park! That's why we planned it for that particular day. Looking forward to seeing many of you! Be sure to say the word if you think you're coming. We can get ...

NPR report on tunicates!
Holy cow, NPR (LA Office) just called me and set up a phone interview at 1pm about the invasive tunicates! The guy who's interviewing me is Luke Burbank - I did some checking and the guy is a total comedian - he'll occasionally do a serious story, but for the most part they're funny ones - what do y...

Mark your calendars now! Saturday, April 14th, 2007 Celebrate Earth Day a week early and join us for a potluck/BBQ/Survey day at the famous Edmonds UW Park! The currents are very nice that day (yes, there can be monster current at EUP!) We'll supply the BBQ, you bring potluck munchies and your own g...

The Eyes Have It!
Years ago, in another galaxy, far, far away, we did a really fun thread of fish eyes. Post a small photo of the eye, and then everyone tries to guess what fish it is! Here's a starter:

John, I've noticed a big difference in how I feel today - was able to go swimming last night (first exercise I've been able to do in WEEKS) and went out for a little motorcycle ride in the mountains today - so doing MUCH better...this is now Day 13 and I think I'm outta the woods! <cross> - Janna :)...

I was going to ask you guys if you had the experience of having crabs 'rain down' on top of you!! That's always fun. I always think it's looking like they're committing suicide the way they leap off into the abyss! I have had a few land ON TOP of me occasionally - now THAT'S an interesting experien...

I have wondered the same thing - but the problem is that it's crowding out native species and completely overtaking underwater 'real estate'. So any positive effects by eating sewage are only helping it grow, flourish, and take over the underwater world. :( BTW, this is the same tunicate you can see...

No worries! These particular tunicates do seem to thrive in really cruddy waters. Not all tunicates are this way though. But Ciona savignyi FEEDS on teeny tiny nano particles of sewage - so yeah, they're currently having a HEYDAY in South Hood Canal. Wylerbear and I did a VERY creepy dive there abou...

You both got some great shots! What a neat thing that must have been to see SO many PS King Crabs in one dive! I usually count myself lucky if I see ONE of them in a dive. The juvies are so funny looking! And I too love the colors of the adults. Hey Tom, you got Fringed Tube Worms to add to your rep...

Next on our agenda is to continue monitoring and removing them as needed. I know an area in South Hood Canal that's completely infested with them. It would be really good to see if we could start removing them there. Problem is it's hard to get shore access at this spot. I'll see what I can do. - Ja...

Front Page Seattle Times - Tuesday Feb 20th!!
The Tunicates have invaded!!! Very nice and well-done writeup about the problem in Puget Sound and Hood Canal by Warren Cornwall. He did extensive research and spent many hours with us divers working on this story. He came out on the Bandito boat one day while we were checking out Maury Island Barge...
