Re: Shrimp help

Thanks. I wasn't sure if those were the spines, especially since it looks like 4 of them.

Raging Shrimp

At Keystone Jetty yesterday I came across a few scenes where Coon Striped Shrimp were doing battle... Four shrimp hold down a fallen jelly while another gets onboard (on for a meal?) http://johne.smugmug.com/Underwater/Anacortes-Dive-Pics/i-c6Q9MqV/0/M/anacortes-M.jpg Several surround a Widehand Her...

Yaquina Bay, south bridge pilings

Parked under the south end of the Yaquina Bay bridge and walked/waded to near the first big concrete footing. Around the footing it gets a little deeper, 10ft or less at high tide. Gravel/sand bottom, lots of gaper clam shells, kelp and eel grass. Continued NW to the second concrete bridge footing. ...

I'm going off an old, old report on the bat rays. This would be the northern-most extent of its range from what I've read. It gives me something to hope for!

Re: Yaquina sand flats

Well cool, be sure to share the pics and info when you go exploring. There are also eel grass areas out by the LNG tank (the big green tank on the north side of the bay). I boat dive it but you could shore dive. If you do shore dive it I'd look hard at a shore side tender with a phone. If your buddy...

Yaquina sand flats

Spent a lot of quality time out in the sand flats this evening. The visibility is pretty good for the bay, maybe 10 feet lately! Went to the end of the 1st finger then west to the 3rd finger. That was quite a haul. Most people stick close to the jetty rocks as it is easier to navigate that way. My b...

Re: New Toy

Here's what I learned with my sola 1200. For closer up video the first level of light was fine. More than that and whatever I was trying to record disappears in a burning ball of light. I use the sola as a dive light when searching. Keeping it on the lowest brightness lets it last a little over an h...

I was stuck at work and couldn't make the class. I just watched the recorded copy. I learned a lot and answered some long running questions about things I've seen out there. Thanks Janna for another good one.

Re: Yaquina Bay fingers

I forgot to add that if you want a buddy call ahead or stop by South Beach Scuba a couple hours before high tide on a weekend. There is almost always someone from the shop, dive club or just visiting who will be heading out to the fingers or another local spot. They are south of the bridge, south of...

Hey, thanks. Here is my other decent pic of the Tubesnouts... http://johne.smugmug.com/Underwater/Yaquina-Dive-Pics/i-FN2J3kH/0/M/IMG0461-M.jpg The fingers off the Yaquina Bay south jetty are a bit of a head scratcher because they can be submerged completely at high tide when you show up to dive. Yaquina Bay fingers

Dove the 3rd finger once again, abundant fishermen steered me away from my plans on the 4th finger. The dredge Yaquina is in town and doing its magic. Everything is covered with a fine tan silt that needs no excuse for billowing into a wonderful cloud. Best advice is to dive so that your face is int...

Dating, hermit crab style

I watched a hermit crab drag a Purple Olive Snail shell maybe 4 feet today. I assumed it had a snail and was taking it off to eat it. It did seem odd that it was dragging its prey so far. Over Chinese food leftovers at home I found it appears to be a smaller hermit crab of the same species. They loo...

Re: Phoronid?

It looks like your sedentary polychaete photo shows the lopophore coming out the end of the stalk. In my pic it looks like very tiny lopophores are coming out of the sides of the stalk. It could look like mold, but they do seem shaped like lopophores. I don't see anything coming out the end of these...

Re: first pics with the new camera ...

Great, good info, thanks. That is the same get-up I am going with. I know about that eel grass. I've been finding new beds of it locally and nobody is home recently. Well, almost nobody. The occasional Dungeness munching on a cockle. We've had a lot of fresh water flushing through the bays lately. I...

Re: Whitespotted Greenling juvenile

I found some more matured juvenile whitespotted greenlings up in Netarts (Oregon) last weekend. At this stage it is more similar to the pics of adults I usually see. Thought I would add this little clip to the conversation here for reference.

Re: Fish ID help

Thanks guys. I'll post a video clip. I've seen the whitespotted greenlings around here a number of times. Also the painted greenlings, although usually offshore not on the jetty. This one just didn't seem to fit into either. The forward slanting bars are odd, not exactly bars either around the later...
