Re: Is it legal to snorkel with Salmon?

One spot under consideration was the Sammamish Slough on the Burke-Gillman trail behind McLendon Hardware in Woodinville. My initial assumption is that this is public land along at least one bank of the river. If anyone has pointers to other info on best-practices for doing this the "right"...

Re: Is it legal to snorkel with Salmon?

We were thinking some shallow water- hopefully relatively low current.

Is it legal to snorkel with Salmon?

With the Sockeye running, some of us were thinking it would be an interesting idea to snorkel and perhaps get some photo opportunities.

But, we wondered if there were any restrictions on this that we should be aware of.

Anyone know?

Thanks!

Re: Remedies for Slosh Ear

This seems like awfully heavy medicating to me... where did this recommendation come from? Does it seem out of place to suggest that if someone requires this level of medication to dive that perhaps they shouldn't dive that day? It certainly isn't out of place to suggest it- or I might say it would...

Re: Stingray Kills Woman - Just Weird

I beleive that a Spotted Eagle Ray is a type of stingray... could be wrong though Spotted Eagle Rays and Stingrays are generally held to be in different families- Stingrays in Dasyatidae and Eagle rays in Myliobatidae, although most members of this family do have a poison-carrying spine- at least a...

Re: Remedies for Slosh Ear

So, lots of good info here- a couple of things. I have sinus "issues". I know this means I probably shouldn't dive, however I've convinced a Doc to say "sure, why not", so that was good enough for me. This means that if I don't equalize- a lot, I get a squeeze and used to get lot...

Re: Stingray Kills Woman - Just Weird

Apparently it was a Spotted Eagle Ray, not a stingray. Gotta love the media.

New reg- Atomic ST1?

A few months ago I had a significant failure of a regulator (Mares Proton Ice) that had recently been incorrectly serviced (not locally). I am still working on the "Near-Miss" report- I've been busy, and I've been mulling things over before I wrote something up. Hopefully I will post on th...

I use the Optical D/W9 set (here). It attaches nicely to the diffuser/blocker that the Ikelite comes with. I don't know if it fits to the canon diffuser.

You will also want some strobe arms. Everyone raves about ULCS, and I see why.

I went with the Inon Z240 on an Ikelite housing- the Inon gets good reviews from lots of folks and as best I can tell is capable of putting out significantly more light than other strobes in that range. I actually got mine on e-bay for a good price, and it showed up- with an English manual! While on...

I have a Canon G9, the Ikelite housing, an Inon Z240 strobe (fiber optic connector) and ULCS arms. I got the housing/strobe just in time to take it to Turks+Caicos two weeks ago. I've posted some info on my experiences with it up on Scubaboard in the "Initial impressions of Canon G9" threa...

Local dive instructor on TV

I was updating some things on my Tivo last night, and noticed that one of my wishlists picked up an episode of a show called Me-Vs-Me featuring none other than our local Tides+Currents guru Mischi Carter. It's on November 16, 2007 at 3:00 AM EST. I think I'll let Tivo catch it and watch it over the ...

Erm, Calvin, I hate to disagree, but the number of atoms in any gas is the same across type of atom- it varies by pressure and temp. Check out Avogadros Law So, at a constant temp and pressure, the density of any gas is directly proportional to its atomic weight. You missed the super tiny post scri...

Note: I might have just had a eureka moment in processing this... Because 1 cu' of helium is filled with many more (because they're smaller) molecules than 1cu' of nitrogen is, it is denser in terms of the number of molecules. The denser the volume of gas, the more energy it takes to warm it. Hence...

There is a very lively discussion on rebreather scrubber life, breakthrough, testing methodology, etc. over on rebreatherworld. Just look for the thread related to "a chart". I have a question, which I probably should ask there, but you all are friendlier. Why does depth affect scrubber ut...

So, I presume they are mounting both the canister and the lighthead on the camera, which is similar to what I've seen on video. Or, are people actually strapping the canister to their tank/gear and just putting the lighthead on a camera. I ask, because the issue with the Light Cannon is it's size on...

A friend of mine mounts his Light-Cannon on his camera. He and I have both thought of getting canister lights, but it seems like attaching a lighthead to a camera housing would be an entanglement hazard.

Does anyone do this (Rather, does anyone _wise_ do this)?

Here is what I was taught, and seemed to work for me: wrt white balance, you shouldn't set it if you use a flash, or should set it to auto in that case. Things came out a bit odd when I manually wb'd before flash. In natural light, wb is key if you are below 15-20 feet. You can fix wb in raw mode, a...
