Re: Canon 5DMKIII Naudicam housing

I love love love my 16-35 on full frame and have used it extensively to shoot documentary footage for pbs, nat geo etc... the 24-70 is more of a portrait lens underwater, even with the full frame. its just never -quite- wide enough for me and I have to get further away which is not ideal. The beauty...

Re: GUE Seattle Wednesday Night Dives -- change of venue

For those who have not been over here in a while, enjoy the West Seattle bridge detour... :( allow lots of extra time to get over here from 'mainland' Lower bridge is open for traffic after 9p. They do have a camera and will ticket so don't even bother trying to scofflaw it a minute early, they WILL...

Re: Salt Creek Exploratory Dives 3/10/21

I reached out and was told "standard winter conditions", can't comment on kelp + urchin situation until kelp comes in. the "short kelp" stalks is most likely the understory that doesn't die back and get ripped out by the winter storm in the same manner, stronger holdfasts... also...

Re: Salt Creek Exploratory Dives 3/10/21

Sounds like standard winter diving conditions at that site, perhaps slightly exacerbated by seastar wasting. But I can ask my nearshore scientist friend who lives there if she’s noticed anything out of the norm. Its been her research site for like 40 years now. Hi Yesterday I went to Salt Creek and ...

Virtual Salish See, Lincoln Park kelp beds #360video

A couple videos from the north end of Lincoln Park, along with a research paper ON the kelp forests of Lincoln Park. The bed used to fill that whole north bay and there was a second bed on the SOUTH side of the point which is not there currently. I'm very interested if anyone has anecdotal info of t...

Re: DIW access

Because they are our de facto representative. WSA = Washington Scuba Alliance from their website: In 1992 from humble beginnings, a group of dedicated scuba divers formed WSA to advocate for underwater parks. This mission has expanded to advocate for and to be actively involved in promoting a wide r...

Re: Alki Point Safe Streets debacle

Always happy to sacrifice for the community.... So far I’ve dove Junkyard and Constellation with only dirty looks from the folks walking in the middle of the streets as I tried to get to my parking place. I did park ‘across’ the street at pipeline to not poke the bear _too_ much. There was a cop sit...

Re: Alki Point Safe Streets debacle

A few of use who voiced concern and chatted up the cops were heard... it mentions “divers concerned” in the Alki community council meeting. Always speak up, join your fellow divers even if it isn’t your ‘local’. We have to stick together on this or we will find ourselves with even fewer readily acce...

Alki Point Safe Streets debacle

Anyone who lives or dives in west seattle may have heard about the latest shenanigan. The “STREET CLOSED” Signs stretch from basically Cactus to Constellation Park. (Meaning the junkyard and pipeline are in theory closed) Had a long chat with one of the local Cops today after my little dive about th...

Re: Dive site mooring

So the way i read it, we need to figure out a way to advocate for street end access ourselves. Additionally, the big question is, if they are OUR outlet for scuba activism in the northwest, how does WSA increase local diver involvement. Not for the membership fees as much as for the bodies to spread...

Re: Dive site mooring

This. I have been helping maintain a buoy for a little old lady (family friend) more past several years now and its always something with chafing, shackles, buoy breaking loose, etc... I replace the shackles what feels like every year or so, the upper chain every 2-3 years, last year the buoy vanish...

Re: Dive site mooring

I wonder if WSA has a document anywhere with the costs for maintenance? This would be super helpful if we decide to run a fundraising campaign. If they don’t does anyone (Randy?? Mike? et al) have an annual maintenance estimate? Boat fee (buy the boat for the day, right now we can’t be asking captai...

Re: Dive site mooring

Which is my point to a degree.... we need involvement from the diving community and divers will get involved with causes that speak to them. Maybe WSA needs to figure out what it is that we-the-people want to get us engaged and involved. Sounds to me like people want some help with neighborly situat...

Re: Dive site mooring

So what is the purpose then? Putting stuff in and not maintaining is actually detrimental (as we've found with green infrastructure) to the bigger picture. Is it lack of funds? Lack of will? Lack of interest? Lack of general diver involvement? Moving on to next shiny object? (I'm as guilty of that a...

So, historically speaking, has anyone sat down and tried to negotiate with the neighbors and city, come up with some ideas for maintenance etc? Re: DIW access

I will repeat, this is where our advocacy group should step in and step up, similar to the surfing community. What is the role of WSA if not to protect and secure access to our shared waterways for Scuba Divers? As an individual it IS often hard to know what or how to handle these situations. We don...
