Re: really cool and scarce nudi

No magnifying glass, just stick in bifocals in my mask. I cover quite a large area on every dive but I have learned where to look and what to look for and my brain and eyes are programed to find the small details that others miss. I do scour the area very throughly. You will frequently find me with ...

Re: Chinese fire dragon. ID help

Hey, Dusty! I sent this off to Andy Lamb, thinking that he might be able to tell us what it was...instead your photo has him scratching his head as well! Here is Andy's reply: "It is most strange! Some general similarities to the mosshead warbonnet, Chirolophis nugator , but many dis-similariti...

Don't miss the chance. Janna's classes are a hoot! She really helped me get off the ground in the ID racket. and yes that is a cresent gunnel. As for the painted mating thing, your kinda late Apil and May is the time. There are still some guarding eggs but the mating colors are pretty much gone. I e...

Vermillion rock fish ????

I think these are vermillion rock fish but not real sure? There were about a half dozen of these little guys down at 90 feet today. I had quite a time trying to get a good shot of them. The viz wasn't very good and they wouldn't sit still! http://underthesound.smugmug.com/photos/304817617_XKYo6-L.jp...

Alright Tom, my turn!

A really tough one to get. Dendrotus frondus with it's eggs. the first shot shows why they aren't seen often. Without good lighting they are just part of the bush and even when you see them they are very hard to get a good focus on. There are actually four of them in this first pic. http://underthes...

Agreed, 1 Monterey and 4 nobels, another givaway is the tubericles on the monterey are sort of pointed and the nobels are flat on top.

Great stuff! I've never seen anything with that color around here...really bizarre! I sent off inquiries to Dave Behrens and Andy Lamb....maybe they'll be able to shed some light on it! If/when I hear back from them I'll post their responses here. - John I talked to Dave already and he said go back...

That's no Naniamo! The skin texture and gills suggest a nobel but the color is way wrong. I'll forward it to the expert and see what he has to say

Spring is the time for pretty flowers. Allot of the small critters are getting covered up by all the sparing growth but there is still beauty to be found on every dive. No this one was on May 1st at 6:30 am at mean low tide meaning it was a +3.12 ft low tide going into a +4.61 high. In other words a very low exchange for several hours. Best chance for the eggs to get fertilized and settle somewhere close.

Here is some interesting behavior!

Here is something you won't see everyday. In fact it only happens once a year on a certain tide. How they decide when and how they get the word out is a mystery to me but all the Gum boot Chitins in the area gather in one spot and shoot there spawn into the water column at the same time and let the ...
