Re: Changes in abundance with the pycnopodia gone

Lit I've seen shows fast growing greens reach about an inch test diameter in two years and adult size as fast as 5 years? Sure this isn't a change in detection rather than abundance? Not trying to wrench on a point but do want to hear opinions as it does affect those who survey urchins as part of th...

Re: Changes in abundance with the pycnopodia gone

There can't be many more urchins this immediately right? How long have sea star populations been reduced and how long does it take a green urchin to reach an adult size? Wouldn't this just be urchins emerging and not increasing in population?

Good to keep measure of these for sure!

Re: Where to find scallops

As rcontera said, you are looking for somewhere rocky and currenty.... luckily (i guess) every place in oregon has plenty of current to meet the second critera... so you just need to find some rocks. The more popular sites (especially shore dive sites) have the fewest.

Very cool, fwiw i've seen brown box crab L. Formiatus (sp?) with enlarged abdomens but not to the degree of those examples... Those were just filled with fluid, not eggs... No answers here but curious

Re: Friday harbor shore diving

Thanks for the tips Bill and Jack, couldn't find a buddy so just did the shallow south wall of county park, was decent, then took kids snorkeling at 4th of July beach, not too exciting. Sure looks like a great place to own a boat!

Re: Type of gunnel or...?

Hi, Your gunnel seems to be a pretty good match for the Red Gunnel Pholis schulzie which is a species not often reported. It could also, as others have mentioned, be a Longfin Gunnel but I suspect that it would take a number of additional photos, including some detailed macro shots of the back and ...

Re: juv rockfish ID

Hey Janna, Thanks again for all the help. Its strange that there would be so much disagreement...I guess for practical purposes it is not that important to ID YOY rockfish, particularly if it is this impractical to do accurately. It seems like a better guide would help, but also appears there would ...

Re: juv rockfish ID

Hmmm.... well, maybe there is no answer for this one. It seems as though the China ID hinges closely (if not used diagnostically) on two things 1) black pelvic/ pectorals and 2) speckling. both our fish lack these two traits. also, do they grow into their "shouldery" shape (i.e. china, gop...

Re: juv rockfish ID

Hey Janna, this fish is getting kind of confusing to me. looked at the Milton Love book today, and am going more towards it definitely being a black and yellow. It is not a china, and i don't think yours is either. Juv china's are speckled and pelvic/ pectoral fins are black. I've seen many of them ...

Re: juv rockfish ID

yeah, that's initially what i thought when i caught my eye (because i see juv china there from time to time), but then like you said, not splotchy, even the juv's are pretty splotchy. also lines different and fins.

Thanks,
Scott

juv rockfish ID

Saw this guy last weekend. I am thinking it is a black and yellow. It was "black and yellow" . there are juv gophers and coppers and quills in the area, but this lacked the colors of those. its A little out of range (southern oregon), but i've seen adult black and yellows here for sure. so...

what is it?

I see these in a couple places, both exposed coast areas... only one valve, always deeply embedded in rocks...

I feel like this should be easy, but for some reason is not.

any ideas?

thanks,

Re: Flooded Camera

The camera is toast. It feels terrible when it happens, I've done it 3 times. I would start from scratch, get a new housing too. A good time to upgrade. It sucks, but it is the truth, there is not resurection from a camera flooded in salt water ... better off to just move on. think of it this way, h...

Re: Humboldt Squid and a Great White Shark?

We get a few of salmon sharks washing up on the beach every year in Oregon. They are almost always reported as whites. I can't remember exactly, but i think something is different with the tail there too. Also, Salmon sharks this size are adults, so they are much more shouldery than i would expect a...

Re: unknown ID

Yeah, I don't really know too well, i'm not a fish guy.

It just looked like a cabby to me, then i saw the skin flap on the top of its mouth and i thought that was diagnostic for a cabezon (i.e. to say no other sculpins have it)

also, i've been known to have been mistaken :)
