Re: Point Hudson
I dive-guide there frequently and was happy to see that I was not crazy. I have been showing up 1.5 hours before the predicted slack (<ebb) and finding the water calming. We have splashed and hour before on multiple and had a calm dive with current started to pick up just about the predicted slack t...

Re: No-knees Dive Training
Thank you Peter. I have talked with a few other involved with "they article." You have all done great service to the dive world. I would still like to see a no-kness class in action. Perhaps I could come to your first pool session for the one you're organizing?

Re: No-knees Dive Training
The instructors that want to keep the status quo of doing skills on the knees say this. They think it will take much longer and use up valuable pool time. That some students need to be stationary on the bottom of the task loading with be too much for them. And some claim it's a safety in that they w...

Re: No-knees Dive Training
I have read about this and followed the debate pro and con. I would like see a class taught this way. I am taking my IDC now, so I'm really interested if teaching this way can be done.

No-knees Dive Training
There is a move afoot in dive training. All the major dive agencies are encouraging open water dive instructors to teach skills in a more realistic, neutral buoyancy position. In other words, get the students off their knees. Do you know any dive instructor in the Puget Sound who have shifted to thi...

Working for free?
I was told by someone that dive shops in the PNW do not pay Assistant Dive Instructors for the work they do assisting the instructor with open water scuba diving classes. Is that true? If yes, wouldn't that mean there is no financial reason to be an AI? Do divemasters get paid or just get tips for l...

Scubapro Sidemount harness questions.
I am looking for anyone that knows the Scubapro Sidemount harness and wing. I need some tips on configuring this kit. Thank you
(I would like to post this on tech diving section because i think more people there would know the answer but I don't seem to have permission.)

Port Townsend has ongoing treasure hunt
The Octopus Gardens Diving shop in Port Townsend just started and ongoing treasure hunt. After you register at the shop you can find tokens on any dive at Point Hudson and the wreck of the Ranger and turn them in for prizes (e.g. dive light, dive travel bag). After those are found they will put out ...

Need memory tricks for Science of Diving
I am taking the Science of Diving (SSI) quiz soon. I need help with memory tricks, acronyms or mnemonics to remember which gas laws and principles apply to which scientist (e.g. Boyle, Archimedes, Charles, Guy-Lussacs, etc.) I could also use help with tricks to remember formulas and constants. Thank...

Salish Explorer took on a new owner who agreed to give it try for a short time again to see if it was profitable to take divers.Joshua Smith wrote:JasonDiver wrote:He was diving from the Salish Explorer dive boat.
Hmm. I thought they weren't taking divers out any more?

This quote, "With a wet suit, a thin layer of water between the diver’s body and the suit serves as insulation." is copied from a current edition of an OW instructor's manual.

Re: Is Water an Insulator in a Wetsuit?
LCF and CaptJack said it all. Water isn't an insulator, but if the warmed water stays put at least you don't lose any more heat. If that isn't enough, I guess someone can find a physics textbook or engineer's handbook of materials properties. Actually, here is a PDF of some kind of classroom lesson...

Re: Is Water an Insulator in a Wetsuit?
Thanks for all the comments. However, I am debating the issue with someone who is creating curriculum for certifying divers and currently believes that water inside the suite after being warmed to body temp becomes and insulator. I really need some hard science that will convince the other side to c...
