Re: Maui Diving Gear
I'm comfortable in a 2/3 full suit and a hood. My wife gets cold easy and has a 3/4. I'm amazed at how many people I see dive 5 and even 7 mm full suits on Maui WITH NO HOOD! What's up with that? Wear a hood and go down a little in the thickness of your suit. I think you'll be more comfortable. I di...

Ellie,
If you're writing for the Oregonian, why are you diving in Washington? Come to the coast where the real divers dive!

Re: Newport Dive shop and diving
South Beach Scuba is 4909 S. Coast Highway, suite 305, South Beach, OR 97366, 541-867-4944. The shop's a little hard to find because it's off the highway in a storage/business park behind the South Beach post office. The Marina Store at South Beach Marina also has a compressor and can do fills to ab...

Re: Jet Fin Question
I got a pair of US Diver Rocket fins 33 years ago and used them for about twenty, then switched to ScubaPro jet fins. I like the Jets better; they have more flex in the middle to me, I don't like the center ridges in the Rockets.

Hi Helga,
Welcome! Always nice to have another Oregonian on the board. I live and dive on the coast. I'm available some Fridays and most Saturdays.

Re: Tragedy in Tillamook
Very little information but a tragedy non the less. I am sure we can all learn lessons as more information comes out. By Associated Press TILLAMOOK, Ore. (AP) — The US Coast Guard says a man diving alone in Tillamook Bay has been found dead. Petty Officer Kelly Parker said the man apparently was us...

Re: Zipper wax
Thanks Ray and Jenn. I was in my NEW local dive shop South Beach Scuba (it's so nice to have one finally) and picked up some of the wax that Ray recommended. I'll give that a try. I also have a few brick of the paraffin Jenn was talking about. I use them to lubricate the bottoms of my woodworking pl...

Zipper wax
There must be a better way. I'm sick and tired of the smell of my zipper wax. :vom: And I don't think it's doing the job as well as it should. I use the stick kind of wax that looks kind of like a big, white crayon. I was helping a dive buddy at the aquarium zip his suit and it zipped real easy. He ...

All of you who enjoy looking at fish should thank all those who buy fishing licenses. Fish and wildlife agencies are funded almost exclusively by revenues from fishing and hunting license and tag sales. In Oregon and Washington fish and wildlife are about the only folks who maintain essential fish h...

Re: Oahu Hawaii Diving
I was in OAHU same weekend SAMSON was in Maui. I dove with Rainbow Scuba for the second year. Ken was my guide again a great guy with a laid back attitude. 2 tank boat dives are $85 or $75 if you bring your own gear. That sounds like a great trip! What I want to know is: Why are boat dives so much ...

Re: Puget Sound "Action Agenda"
"The rescue campaign is supposed to deliver a Sound that is mostly clean enough for swimming, fishing and shellfish harvesting by 2020."
I guess you Washington divers will have to do your diving on the Oregon coast for the next 12 years until the sound is clean enough to swim in.

Re: Took a UW Photo Class
Thanks for the tips Scott. My little camera won't shoot in RAW. What I need is one of those fancy Cannon G10s.
I was hoping to dive Netarts today, but my foot is swollen up from all of last weeks activities, including our first underwater hockey game with the HMSC and MRP folks.

Took a UW Photo Class
Monday and Tuesday I took a photo class at the Oregon Coast Aquarium from Joe Wysocki. I really enjoyed the class and learned a lot. Joe is a great teacher and very hands on. He works you hard too. After my fourth dive on Tuesday it felt like someone beat me with a club. Joe teaches classes all over...

Re: Off to Maui
The bigger question is: Where do you plan to dive? Maui is great for shore diving. We usually do one boat dive, but they are expensive ($135, give or take a couple of bucks). Several dive shops (Maui Dreams and Maui Dive Shop) have cards you buy for $40 that are good for 10 tank rentals. At that pri...

Re: Off to Maui
The thing I notice when I dive Maui is that almost no one wears a hood. The dive master on one of my dives wears a 7 mil and goes bare headed and complains about being cold in 76-degree water. How long do you think he'd last diving the NW? Your mom was right when she said you loose most of your heat...

New dive shop in Newport
We've been without a dive shop for almost four years now in Newport. That's a long time considering prior to that there's been a shop here since 1968. Chris at the South Beach Marina Store has kept things going by pumping air, but that was about it. This week I discovered South Beach Scuba, which pr...

Re: Brain dump on Oregon coast diving
Thanks for the info! We've been scouting places to dive in Oregon for a while now. We did 3 Graces in August. It was very nice. 15-20 viz, and loads of things to see. The crabs coming up out of the sand was a riot! There didn't seem to be places to get air fills on the northern coast. How is it fur...

Re: Cucumber hunting!
Our NW sea cucumbers are sure a lot better looking than the ones in Hawaii. Ours have a nice brownish-red color and are spiky and cool; the ones in Hawaii are dark brown oblong blobs that look like you-know-what. All that to say, ya they live here and in the tropics, but ours are cooler.

Computer software for the SUUNTO VYTEC DS
I've got a SUUNTO VYTEC DS and use the Suunto Dive Manager 2.6.0 software. There are a few things I like about it, but there must be something better out there.

Re: i'm in the dive computer market again
I've got the SUUNTO VYTEC DS and love it. When I started diving about the only dive computer on the market was the ScubaPro Bend-o-Matic, which was real scary. A computer jock friend of mine built a bottom timer that ended up being a little bigger than a soup can and everyone in the college dive clu...

Re: Brain dump on Oregon coast diving
There are no real secrets to diving in Oregon. Find rocks, dive on them... the only "secret" is finding good conditions, for that you must be on top of the weather breaks. There are not places in Oregon where you can walk in 300 days of the year and expect safe conditions... we get ~10 da...
