Re: Bonne Terre Mines, Bonne Terre, MO
Yeah, I still go back annually to see the parents. Bonnie Terre was where the open water dives were back on high school. I'll always have memories of the place. The gym coach was a scuba instructor so we got scuba lessons one semester. Bud? Ugh. It's like having sex in a canoe. F***ing close to water.

+1 for Schlafly's. Having unfortunately grown up in St. Louis, it's nice to see the beer situation much improved when I go back to visit.WylerBear wrote:Got to Schlafly's if you get a chance. Lots of fun beer choices and you'll feel right at home. They definitely have a northwest feel there.

Re: Narrows drift / scooter dive.
Just plenty like that. I worked in radio during college and spent a lot of time on guest lists to get into some pretty scary places... let's just call them unsavory crowds. Of course, when you're a broke-a** college student, who cares?Joshua Smith wrote:Lol. Well, to be honest....yeah. Were you at that show?

Re: How do you pack your gear for vacation?
A few other things you might find helpful: If you go with a "scuba" bag, remove the gaudy scuba logos or paint over them. Less of a target on the ramp or luggage claim carousel for sticky fingers. Neoprene drysuits are heavy. If you can afford it, a even a used trilam is much better for bo...

Thanks. That's the Reverend Horton Heat "Rocket" from his "Lucky 7" album. Great album. Wow. I used to watch him be the _opening_ act for other bands in small clubs in Dallas, Austin, and Houston back when I was in college. He's still one of my favorites and has his own Pandora ...

Re: Can You Damage An LED Emitter?
Emitters are trivial to replace, although the mechanical concerns are usually harder than the electrical. I find disassembly of some of the heat sinks to be the most challenging part... a lot of times the emitter can be epoxied in place, which makes for a challenging extraction procedure. As long as...

Re: removing paint on a tank...
BTW, Jeff - you should be very wary of repainting and I would highly suggest not doing it after you clean up the tank. The best finishes for this kind of service are actually bake-on, and if you do that to an AL tank, you'll ruin the tank from the heat exposure. Ones that aren't baked on usually scr...

The nice part is that NiMH and especially lithium batteries are now so small that even a mini-lathe (7x12 or 7x14) is more than capable of cranking out canisters and lids. The old lead acid or NiCads used to require serious shop equipment to build.

Re: How to remove design from neoprene
Besides the Sharpie, the other thing I suggest is going to one of the auto parts stores around here and heading to the paint and body section. They make a paint that's specifically designed to touch up faded fabric on car seats - essentially, it's a spray can full of black dye. Just hit the helmet, ...

Interesting... I'm curious to hear how the maintenance turns out to be. I'm looking for a hack rig myself which can fit a 100 lb coonhound, and the Urals are nice looking, although I've been gunning for an older R series BMW and Steib or something similar. The price is certainly more than reasonable...

I personally like the fabric cutters. They're kind of like a pizza cutter but with a razor blade inside. Use a new blade. Any good fabric store should be able to help you out with one of them. Stretch it over the tank and slice away...

Re: Light Help
Josh - Better than trying another charge cycle is to cycle the NiMH pack a couple of time. It is possible that you may have a bad cell in the pack...over discharge on NiMH can cause cells to go bad, and it won't hold a full charge. Alternatively, the so-called "smart" chargers look for dip...

Welcome to being a Midwest Quarry Commando! (Damnit, there's gotta be a card for that, right up with the Lemon Wedges...) After that anyone doubt the wisdom of following the Flight Attendant's briefing to "...put on your own mask first before assisting others."? Especially since, as I recall, you are already at 8000' PA before the decompression. What the flight attendants don't tell you: Your actual time of ...

Re: Interesting video about effects of Hypoxia
FYI - anyone can try this for themselves in the US. I consider it highly advisable for any rebreather divers out there. The FAA, via it's civil aeromedical branch (CAMI) offers this training for free in Oklahoma City, or at nominal cost at a bunch of air force bases...Spokane is the closest to Seatt...

Re: IS there an AIR rebreather?
Interestingly enough, the last time I flew with one of the rebreathers, the TSA paged me and wanted me to prove the scrubber was empty. They don't seem to like the loose kitty litter for some reason, although it's relatively benign.

Re: Diving Antarctica with a guitar
A couple divers with me did try them them (Neptunes, I think) and ditched them after the first day of diving for the normal mask/reg setup. They found them more of a PITA than a help, very leaky and hard to seal, and the Neptunes were pretty crappy FFMs, anyway... Frankly, the water's cold, but not ...

Well, it's been an interesting 18 months away from the PNW, but I've come to realize that water's far more important to me than even the world's best skiing nearby... so I'm trading in Denver for a move back to Seattle this week. :joshsmith: I'm dying to get back in the water; sadly enough, I've bee...
