Re: In Memoriam: Lynne Flaherty (LCF, TSandM)

The world was a better place with Lynne in it, and the dive community lost its top ambassador and mediator. She was one of a kind, and will be greatly missed.

Rest in peace, Lynne. Peter, I am so sorry. If there is anything I can do, just say so.

Re: Dive Training

I'll echo what others have said... When I started to consider taking Divemaster training, I decided I wanted to have at least 200 dives. I was being "pushed" into becoming a DM a bit faster than I was comfortable with. I don't know how I came to that number, but at the time, it probably ju...

Glad you were able to go, Chris. That was a lot of fun!

It'd been a while since I'd dived there. I really love that dive.

Re: Maui Easy Shore Diving Recommendations 2/22-3/4

It depends a lot on where you'll be staying on the island. We usually stay in Kihei, and there are plenty of great sites in that area...Makena Landing, 5 Graves is a must do (we normally enter at 5 Graves and exit at Makena Landing), White Rock, Ulua, La Perouse, etc. This is a great book that can b...

Re: Cave Diving in Mexico Over Thanksgiving with the GoPro H

One more video from the trip…the Pit The Pit is a very deep sinkhole that gets to ~360' or so. There’s a downstream passage and upstream passage at ~35', however, and they are gorgeous. We had last done it in early 2011 and it took quite a bit of effort to get to it, requiring the usual drive over l...

Re: Interesting article from John Chatterton

I'm not quite wrapping my brain around this statement. How are you self-reliant when you are relying on others? I’ll take a stab… I agree that I think it has to do more with each person’s interpretation of “reliance”. When showing up to the dive site, I’d consider a diver to be “relying on others” ...

Yeah, caves aren't fun, don't worry you aren't missing anything! :) That being said, i'd move to Florida or Mexico in a heart beat, currently waiting for the job in Gainesville to open back up... Thanks again for another great video! I agree. [sarcasm]You're not missing a thing.[/sarcasm] And, all ...

Re: Cave Diving in Mexico Over Thanksgiving with the GoPro H

Thanks, Jan! Lynne, jump off Lagarto like you're going to Lithium. Go past the Lithium jump and continue on way past the Lithium jump, through Trap Door and Chicklet Highway. We decided to bypass Pabilanny Passage and took the upper route, which is right around where we turned, IIRC. About an hour p...

Re: Cave Diving in Mexico Over Thanksgiving with the GoPro H

Next up is Calimba and Pabilanny! Both are in the Sac Actun System. We did Calimba for the first time the last time we went to Mexico and it quickly became one of my favorites. It’s a white, highly decorated and very ornate cave. It’s also a bit challenging as it’s fairly tight in areas, along with ...

Damnit! There's always something else to buy, isn't there? Guess I need to jump on this too! On a related note, if anyone picked one of these up and wants a few points on how to use it, our very own lundysd does photo classes from time to time. I've taken Lundy's class, and it's perfect for this typ...

Re: BIG nitrox sticker on tank.

I personally don't use them, as they don't really serve a purpose to me. However, I think what it really comes down to is the shop filling your tanks. Some shops want to see the nitrox band, regardless of what information is on the VIP sticker, if they are going to fill a tank with anything other th...

Thanks everyone for the replies and D, those videos are excellent - when you say camera mount - what specifically do you mean? -Rob There are many mounting options for the Gopro (head strap, helmet, tripod, etc). Depending on what footage you're trying to get, it may be a good idea to consider gett...

Wreck of the Dreamscape

This past weekend we joined CaptnJack on the wreck of the Dreamscape that he and Scott Boyd located in Dyes Inlet in March 2012. It's a surprisingly large wreck at ~130' long, given its shallow depth. For an obviously scuttled wreck, it's got a lot of character! The original shaft hole is enormous, ...

Re: Chosing Deco gas (50, or 80+)

Lots of good info given so far. And like Casey said, "it depends on the dive"... For me personally, on single deco bottle dives (to 170fsw), from a pure decompression/how do I feel after the dive standpoint, I prefer 100% with a very nice, slow, shaped ascent to the bottle. However, lookin...

Re: Weight Belts and Rescue Diving

I would attempt the most controlled ascent possible and try to ditch the victim's weight at the surface. I would try to get to the surface as quickly and efficiently as possible WITHOUT jeopardizing myself or the victim. Like Herb said, if I'm impaired I'm no use to anyone and could become a victim...

Re: Cave Diving in Mexico Over Thanksgiving with the GoPro H

Thanks Dusty, Koos and Dave!

Dave, we took turns for the most part, but Jeanna was pretty focused on taking stills on this trip and she got some good ones. We're uploading them to the website today. I'll let you know as soon as they're up. We each had a pretty good mix of shooting and just diving.
