Phil and Merry visit the PNW
We met several Washington divers while at God's Pocket in October. It was great putting faces to the names I had known from Scubaboard and the Northwest Dive Club websites. ScubaJess and Eric talked about the Pacific Spiny Lumpsuckers, Lumpies appearing soon at their local dive sites. Merry and I so...

Re: The Bottle Thread
I have a small collection of old Coke bottles. My favorite is a 1923 Christmas bottle. The U.S. Patent offices happened to be opened that day, so Coca-Cola had a limited run of Christmas bottles made.

That is definitely a juvenile sheephead.

I tried a small suction cup but it slides right off when it gets wet.

I thought about that. It's a stone, not glass, so it might work.

Re: COVID-Delayed Annual God's Pocket Report
I bought a seven inch disc. They are heavy and sail when you drop them. :( I dropped mine on its initial dive. I didn't see where it fell, but a buddy did. It went into a crack at 90 feet that was about a foot away from my outstretched hand. I had to remove a fin and use it to bring the stage back t...

Re: COVID-Delayed Annual God's Pocket Report
I sweep the nudi from the substrate, catch it on the stage, and wait for it to grab on. I turn the stage to get a good angle, rest the end of the port on the stage to reduce camera shake, look up to get a black background, and have my strobes pointed inward and turned down. Once I have good focus, I...

Re: COVID-Delayed Annual God's Pocket Report
I got mine on Amazon. I've used obsidian stages for a few years but didn't know about the polished ones until a few months ago. I had to look up the word scrying.

COVID-Delayed Annual God's Pocket Report
Our annual trip to God's Pocket was a bit more difficult this year. Delayed a year because of the pandemic, we were only allowed into Canada if we were fully vaccinated and had a negative COVID test within 72 hours of travel. We also had to get a negative test to return to the U.S. The Border Patrol...

Tariff on housings at YVR
U. S. Customs wanted to charge us a tariff for bringing our housings back from God's Pocket. They wanted to know the value, but let us slide this time. They said we need to get a card from Port Authority next time. The U. S. is turning into Cabo San Lucas.

Re: Canada to open border to fully vaccinated U.S. citizens on Aug. 9!!!
Merry and I arrived in Port Hardy today. It was fairly painless. We showed our vaccination cards and negative tests at LAX and Vancouver airport and had no real delay. We'll be here for 2 1/2 weeks. I hope we don't get sick while we're here.

Re: Truth Aquatics Conception Boat Fire Tragedy
Unless they were sleeping in full asbestos suits, breathers, and full helmets there is no way they could walk through fire. According to the latest reports, the victims were already dead from smoke inhalation. I know television and movies make us think the crew always goes down with the ship, but th...

Re: My Diving Accident End of June
Before Merry retired, we used to collect sea water and look at in under the microscopes at her lab. There are so many animals and silica particles that I often wondered if it would be better to spit in my mask and not rinse it.

They will be there until the end of the month before heading to work at a fishing lodge. I talked to Claus and he wants to try hiring them full time.

Re: God's Pocket is back, and better than ever!
We had a second trip scheduled for last August that was postponed twice. We had them hold our deposit. The gamble paid off. It was the best vacation I have ever had. We'll be back again next March.
