TIL this year Washington became the first state to prohibit octopus farming (yay us!)

Actually, we're the first government anywhere to ban octopus aquaculture! And a bill was just introduced into congress to do the same. :partydance:

Are you diving Hood Canal Saturday afternoon, 7/20?

I'll be on a small road trip and coming up Hood Canal on Saturday, probably around 1 or 2pm.

If you're going to be diving somewhere (Sund Rock, Pt. Whitney, Octopus Hole) around then and wouldn't mind a hanger-on, let me know!

I did that last week but it started popping out the top. THOOOP! Maybe my neck seal is bigger/looser than yours.

Plugging a Neck Seal

If you're doing a leak test on your drysuit and want to plug the neck seal, what do you use?

I was thinking of getting a kid's plastic ball...

Re: Hoffman Cove, Shaw Island

Update! We dove the east side of Hoffman cove, "Terra Incognita" in the above photo, which turned out to be surprisingly good. Lots of rocks and small walls with urchins, sea cukes, scallops, fish, the works. A scooter or live boat is mandatory since it would be easy to misjudge the curren...

Olympic Coast Nat'l Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council recruitment

Hi All, I'm on the advisory council for the OCNMS and wanted to alert you to two open volunteer positions, for the Conservation (alternate) and Marine Business (primary) seats. Info here . These are completely volunteer positions, the workload is fairly light, and applications are welcome. If you or...

Sixty: You continue to amaze me. Do you think it is local, e.g. the Chuckanut Formation, or is it imported? -Curt (Yeah, I'm watching a whale as I type this.) Hi Curt, it's all imported. I suspect a lot of it was sourced from Bellingham or British Columbia mines 'back in the day', probably 1880-192...

Got Coaled?

I've found coal before but nothing this big!

Note to self: Coal is only slightly negatively buoyant in sea water, but heavy as heck above the water.

Re: New diver, new setup built

I don't see gloves on that list. ;-) Glad you like diving in a wetsuit or semi-dry! Most of us end up getting a drysuit and dry gloves eventually. When you're ready for that, Seaskin can make you a custom trilaminate suit starting at about $800. Recommended addition: a Weezle undergarment. Come over...

I didn't see this until today. I've never dived at PT, I'd be up for diving with you sometime if we planned it ahead of time. I want to do all those sites! Cool! I'm often available on the weekends. Critters, bottles, whatever you like. There's been a lot of disruption at Point Hudson and it's goin...

OceanConnect ocean conditions app

Well this is pretty cool! OceanConnect. Near-term past, present, and future ocean conditions: Temperature, tides, currents, and more. And there's an app for it.

(But I'd take those current estimates with a big grain of sea salt...)

Anybody diving in Port Townsend Saturday 4/13?

Tides and currents kinda suck but it's supposed to be a nice day. Would love to find a buddy for a dive, maybe check out the new reef.

Re: Point Hudson Marina in Port Townsend to reopen on March 1

I sent out a request to the PT city council, asking if we could close the new breakwater to fishing since we're trying to establish new habitat and there's been a resurgence of fish schools there. I also cc'd the port. Turns out the rules for that kind of thing are made by the Port of PT, not the ci...

Re: Point Hudson Closed

What's new @ Point Hudson this season? Is it open for diving yet? All open, construction is done. I think they're just now putting the finishing touches on the walkway over the breakwater. Aside from the new breakwater itself, which is going to be awesome habitat when it's had a chance to flourish,...

Saint Helena Island dive trip report

Hi All! I just returned from a dive trip to St Helena island. It's in the South Atlantic , but you knew that. :snorkel: It was awesome! Low-key island life, tons of fish, wrecks, lava topology and swim-throughs everywhere, whale sharks, mobulas, very fun. Water temp in the high 70's F, I wore a 5mm ...

Re: Florida transplant hoping to get certified!

Welcome!

Living in Everett you're nearly on the doorstep of Edmonds Underwater Park, probably the best place locally to practice diving. No current, not much wave action, lots of critters, oodles of shallow areas, all good.

Point Hudson Marina in Port Townsend to reopen on March 1

From an article in the PDN: https://www.peninsuladailynews.com/news/marina-in-pt-to-reopen-on-march-1/ I assume this means the barges will be gone and construction complete. Come see all the fish before they're gone! Schools of black rockfish. The new adjacent rock reef is sprouting kelp, and GPOs h...

Re: Epic Underwater Finds: What did you Discover today?

That's pretty awesome, love the flintlocks. Not so sure I would dive in the Columbia... We've found a ton of stuff in Port Townsend, some we're still trying to identify. Most of the earliest stuff comes from the 1880s, although we've seen a few bottles, bits and pieces from the 1860-70's. That's abo...
