Serendipity

One of the reasons I do macro photography is because I always see more things with the camera than I do with my eyes. Here's a couple of photos from Redondo today where I totally missed the little nudibranchs in the viewfinder. Leopard nudibranch Diaulula sandiegensis underneath a shrimp. http://far...

color variations in Lingcod

I got the strobe up and working again so I headed out to Edmonds UWP to try it out on the resident Lingcod. Interesting the way these fish vary from brown to yellow to green and blue. Viz is still good despite all the recent rain. http://www.hershmanphoto.com/Nature/Fish-of-the-Eastern-Pacific/Fishe...

Re: New UW Photographer

Hi everyone! I have been diving for about one year. During that time I have been using the Sealife Reef Master Mini. This little camera has served me well on tropical dives/snorkeling trips. However, here in the Puget Sound this camera does not cut it. I have been doing a lot of research on upgradi...

Re: my strobe gave up the ghost

Sorry to hear that Dan, what make was it and what gave up? At the price of these things, you got me now worried... What are you getting for replacement? I'm sending my DS125 back to Ikelight for a going over. (I've used this strobe for 4 yrs now so it likely has some small leak somewhere-- at least...

my strobe gave up the ghost

My strobe is now dead RIP---- it passed away after 34 shots at Boeing Creek Reef last weekend. :-({|= Lots of rockfish there, its a great boat dive if you haven't been there before. Here's some shots of a couple of the local residents. Now I just have to wait for the new strobe to arrive........ htt...

Re: P&S UW Camera...

Oh! Also!!! I saw somewhere where the Canon SD960 was not compatible with Vista? Is this true? K No , the Canon SD960 works fine with vista. You don't want to use the Canon software that comes with the camera anyway. And as of thursday we can all run out and buy the latest Windows version, Windows ...

Re: P&S UW Camera...

I'm a fan of Ikelight housings and higher end point and shoot cameras. Like the Canon G11 or the Nikon Coolpix 6000, as they have strobe hot shoes and make strobe exposure so much easier. Canon is coming out with a nice upgrade to its S series with S90 in November (although it doesn't have a hot sho...

Gorgeous find! That is certainly a lunker and a beautiful shot too needless to say I'm jealous having never even seen one but alas they are not found in the sound. By shear volume he is probably larger than just about any nudi your likely to find! According to Whelks to Whales author Rick Harbo, Or...

Yep certainly is a pink! and best shot I've ever seen of one !!! Great angle and clarity. That is a show stopper. :notworthy: :notworthy: But as far as the largest nudi up here I'm pretty sure you wont find anything larger than the iris 12" followed by the dendronotus rufus 11" the pinks ...

Humboldt Squid and a Great White Shark?

I was at Neah Bay this past weekend and saw what looked like a child's toy shark on the beach. As I got closer I realized that it was no toy! http://www.hershmanphoto.com/photos/663315010_3hvGo-M.jpg This fellow had been on the beach for a while, but it sure looked to me like a baby Great White. Right genus, wrong species. It's a Cancer oregonensis (pygmy rock crab), the guys you usually see hiding in giant barnacle shells. OK, I see the difference now. Thanks for the correction. I thought this was a Northern Ronquil--- but now I'm too sure as I don't see the long dorsal fin. (perhaps I'm missing it)

Re: unknown ID

first one looks like a cabezon. agree with the scalyhead ID, Great shots, Scott I don't see the tufts behind the eyes to indicate that the first sculpin would be a cabezon....... I think I'd go with the buffalo id as dusty2 said. I could be wrong though. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3271/23365036...
