first uw video

My Nikon D80 died on my last day in Bonaire, so I grabbed my Canon S80 point and shoot and housing and took it instead. I decided to just play around with the video feature on the camera to see what I could come up with. I hobbled together some footage to go along with Aquarium from Carnival of the ...

some wide-angle shots

I don't often get to do wide angle shots around home, so here's some from last weeks trip. Taken with a Tokina 12-24mm lens, dome port. Dual strobes, with an Ikelite DS125 and Sea and Sea YS90 as a slave (yes, thanks to everyone's advice I was able to get the parts together to use the Sea and Sea st...

Re: Back from Bonaire

Thanks! For the macro shots I used a Nikon 60mm macro lens, its the sharpest of any glass that I have. The wide angle of the Hilma Hooker is a 12-24mm Tokina lens, set to the widest setting of 12mm (18mm equivalent on 35mm film). I also used an 18-55mm for medium size fish portraits. I don't recall ...

Back from Bonaire

My buddy Andy and I spent last week in Bonaire, doing mostly shore diving mixed in with a few boat dives with Toucan Diving. The coral reef seems to be doing better than my last visit, with some of the more hardier coral species making a modest comeback into the shallow, hurricane affected areas. Wh...

Re: Juvenile Cabezon

They sure do! They can be anywhere from a beautiful gold to brown to this bright red or anywhere in between. I often wonder why nature makes juveniles such flashy colors? You would think it best that the young be well camouflaged. So what do we know? Nice shot Dan. It really highlights the eyebrows...

Juvenile Cabezon

I saw what I thought at first was a very bright red Irish Lord, but when I got closer I realized that it was a small cabezon Scorpaenichthys marmoratus. Juveniles show this bright red color. Cove 2 in West Seattle.

Re: Canon G10

The Ikelight G10 housing has the option for a dome attachment for wide angle shooting that is far superiour to any of the wide angle attachments one typically sees (Inon and others). Its removable underwater so you can switch between a flat port and dome port without having to surface and disassembl...

Re: PERSPECTIVE

Nice shots!

Perspective as you've described it is the process of changing the angle of view so as to simplify the subject of the picture. A cleaner background and a more interesting angle of view go a long way towards making a shot more interesting, memorable and compelling.

Nice job!

Re: Any book suggestions?

I'm hoping to find a good book on the good the bad and the ugly of taking pics in the PNW waters :book: I haven't bought any photography equipment yet, because I have NO idea about gear or techniques, and figured if there is one (book) out there someone on this forum will know about it!! Thanks The...

Re: Canon G10

AMEN on the Canon housings! When I bought my G9, I didn't want to risk playing the flood game anymore - so got an Ikelite housing for it. But do note, those Canon housings only seem to flood after a LOT of use - maybe like a year's worth or so. So when you're just starting out, they're fine. Just d...

Re: Strobes??

Blue color casts in UW photos are caused by the amount of water that surface light has to travel through. Red light has lower energy so its filtered out first, followed by the yellows, then greens and finally blues. The only color that is present at depth is blue, but beyond a certain depth all ligh...

OK What are you doing diving my site without me. LOL :pirate: :pirate: :pirate: Seriously, Glad you made it up. Not the best of tides though in addition to the wind. It's always a good site for nudies. There are always tons of the verrucosas you just have to look close. If you didn't see at least 10...

a couple of Port Townsend dives

Andy and I braved the winds at Port Townsend today and went on a nudi hunt. Millions of Red gilled nudibranchs Flabellina verrucosa . Uniformly tiny, they were everywhere. http://hershman.smugmug.com/photos/491485617_LCRND-S.jpg Lots of Nanaimo nudibranchs a Acanthodoris nanaimonensis as well. (This...

Wow, I looked at those on a Nudi ID website I found but all of there pic's the Festiva had swirly lines across the back so i assumed that was a defining characteristic. Otherwise I thought it looked like a Festiva. Another 1st for me. Diving is sooooooo awesome! Thanks, MJ Tritonia festiva is also ...

Stubbies are the best! Piglets look like an overstuffed sausage with dreadlocks. On behalf of piglets everywhere I must protest! they look more like Miss Piggy. Why is 'cuteness' defined by media-driven cartoon characters? (or in this case, Muppets?) Stand up for your local cephalopod! :smt038

Re: Canon G10

As an alternative its worth mentioning that the Nikon P6000 has the same level of performance as the G10, and ikelight makes an excellent housing for it. The best 'prosumer' point and shoot on the market today however is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3. With an f2.0 leica lens and a 24-60mm zoom it woul...

Heart Crab

I was out at Ft Casey Saturday and did a couple of dives, on the second one we found this Heart Crab Phyllolithodes papillosus underneath the pilings east of the jetty. Not rare, but still a bit suprising to find, it has a heart shape on its carapace. This one was about 8 inches across http://farm4....
