God's Pocket October October 13-19

After many years of reading about everyone's adventures at Gods Pocket I finally had the opportunity to go. An amazing dive site, complete with Humpbacks circling right off the dock plus Sea Otters floating idly offshore. The only negative was that we got slammed by some severe weather... heavy rain...

Re: a gathering of Crabs at Redondo

there's been something going on there for quite awhile. Odd groupings of animals.... one time its dozens of sea cucumbers. Another time its wall to wall striped nudibranchs. And this time a crab convention!

a gathering of Crabs at Redondo

I saw something very strange out at Redondo today, along the rope line north of the Black Pearl. There was a gathering of dozens of crabs of all sizes and species. Plus a few sole hanging out as well. There didn't appear to be mating or even feeding taking place, just all of them 'hanging out' toget...

Found weight belt at Redondo

I recovered a lost weight belt from the eel grass at Redondo yesterday. I’m thinking it might be a student’s, it had masking tape with the name Rachel written on it. If you know who this belongs to PM me and describe it and it’s yours.

Crab cleaning a fish

I was diving at Redondo last week and just as we started down the rope below the MaST I saw what appeared to be a Graceful Crab embracing a sole. I watched for awhile to see what was going on, and it was clear that the Sole was lifting up its head to reveal its underside, giving the crab clear acces...

I wonder why they live down there? doesn't seem to be much in the way of food, but clearly they are doing well.

Lumpsucker on Fox Island East Wall

Yesterday my buddy Mark Nayer and I got up early to hit the slack at Fox Island East Wall. We don't dive this spot very often as the currents have to be favorable and there's always the 'climb of death' getting back to the parking lot at the end. The walls here are a crumbly gravel much like those a...

Derek

I've tried sending a PM but I'm having difficulty getting it to work. No matter what I do the message just sits in my outbox. (I'm going to try another browser and see if thats the problem). You might try sending me a PM then perhaps I can respond to it?

Thanks

Sund Rock Nudibranchs today

My buddy Mark and I went to Sund Rock this morning. Viz went from bad to mediocre to fairly good at 40-50 feet, with a very warm surface layer of water at about 67 degrees, dropping to 53 at depth. This summer seems to be an especially good season for Flabellina trophina, we saw huge numbers of them...

White Juvenile sculpin?

I was diving at Three Tree Today and came across an odd looking white fish. Looks like perhaps a buffalo sculpin juvenile? https://photos.smugmug.com/MarineLife/Marine-Life-of-the-Pacific/Fish/Fishes-of-the-Northwest/i-8xCrHDK/0/fdbc545e/M/_DSC6632-M.jpg I also found this really nice juvenile cabezo...

Re: Atomic Cobalt computer issues

Does you LDS sell Shearwater? I hope so. If they are talking down a product they carry in favor of another that is cool. If they are talking down a product they don't carry vs one they do, it will come back to bite them, and is one of the few problems I have with some local shops. To set the record...

Re: Atomic Cobalt computer issues

I know about the conservatism of the Suunto devices, I had a buddy for a number of years that used a Cobra and he was often getting close to deco while my computer still read green. I'm not much of a 'push the envelope' kind of diver, but getting locked out on a trip would be a bummer (unless of cou...

Atomic Cobalt computer issues

I've used an Atomic Cobalt (1) for the past 6 years or so and I think I'm probably looking at a new device now. On my last dive instead of turning itself on automatically upon entering the water it showed the white screen of death. Im torn between sticking with the Cobalt or ditching it for a differ...

Re: incredible schools of shiner perch

Really cool shots! I noticed a ton of baby rock fish everywhere by Gods Pocket. I'm glad the fish are coming back. :) I hope it's a good sign, but I'm worried that maybe there are less big fish to eat the little fish? :( I haven't seen a lingcod at Redondo in years, but if one happened by it would ...

fantastic shots! I'm glad the baby Rock fish are booming down there too. I saw them everywhere up in BC. :) Did you see a lot of squat lobsters and shrimp? Yes, indeed. Lots of life of all kinds. good viz at Sund Rock for Wide Angle

Mark and I went to Sund Rock yesterday for a bit of fall diving in Hood Canal. We weren't expecting great viz because of all the rain on Saturday but we were relieved to find that the cloudy freshwater runoff was limted mostly to the top 25 feet. Below that it opened up to about 30 feet of visibilit...
