Best practices and gear for boat diving
There was some good discussion about gear for boat diving that I wanted to spin off from a few recent threads; Don’t fear the reefer and attempted SMB hijacking with video , Agate redux , and Omar and Agate Pass . I suspect that there are a lot of folks who are divers first and boaters as necessary ...

It was Cooper's weight pouches that Norris grabbed and put in his BC up at Wapmough Head before he rolled in and discovered that he couldn't sink. Glad you finally got on the board.

KUOW streams all their broadcasts live at http://kuow.org/listen/ in addition to their archives and podcasting. If you have high speed internet you can listen.

Re: Well, we ALMOST had a new wreck dive...
Looks like it wasn't a convertible so we could have had a wreck to teach penetration on and Bob wouldn't have to drive all the way to Canada for a class. At low tide it we would even have a use for our snorkels inside.

I am up for something local on a week night if we can find viz where we might be able to see fish and away from popular dive sites. Saturday I probably can't leave Seattle till 9:00 or so. Keep me in the loop. You can buy your fish/crab license online at https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/ and print a temp...

Re: Do you carry a whistle?
The Storm whistles are loud enough to make my ears ring for several hours. There is also a slightly more compact model called the Wind Storm. http://www.stormwhistles.com/home.html You can even get them in black!!! I have them on all my life jackets and in my BC pocket. I have a smaller whistle, a f...

It sounds like work on the Hood Canal Bridge is ahead of schedule and it could open as early as June 6th http://hoodcanalbridge.blogspot.com/ . That will make it much easier for us folks from the Seattle Metro area to come play with you. My family has undeveloped beach property on the East side of t...

I am thinking about it. I may walk out on the ferry dock or fishing pier and check out the vis before I commit to diving. 10:30 seems like it might be a bit early but I am not an expert.

I found that a neoprene mask strap was much easier to manipulate than the traditional silicone/rubber mask strap. I can only imagine that it would be easier on long hair. Of course in OW your hair will be constrained by a hood. As for a snorkel, I carry a folding snorkel http://tdl.divebiz.net/image...

Brinnon is South of Pleasant Harbor.
I don't think I can make it with the Hood Canal Bridge being out. Let me know next time you come North.

Re: Diving 5/23/2009
Options launching from Shilshole in Seattle. I haven't dove any of these sites. Currents won't be pretty since there is a -2 tide at 11:00. I don't think that Blakeley Rocks, Possesion Pt., Blake Is., etc. are an option. Boeing Creek Reef Launch from Shilshole Ramp, about 4 miles north http://www.em...

Sorry to have not replied sooner but I am interested and located in Seattle. I'm thinking about hitting something like Blakely Rocks, a drift dive down Agate Pass, Boeing Creek Reef, Dauntless. I want a profile that keeps us above 80fsw. I have been sailing in the area for a long time so I feel comf...

I am not a merit badge collector but I value good training. I took a craptastic OW class almost ten years ago and didn't dive much till Jan. 2008. I have about thirty dives since last August and am finally feeling like I am starting to get proficient. Unfortunately this plateau of skills is the type...

pensacolaracer Or you could wear all your gear as you walk on the ferry. That would raise a few eyebrows. Make sure you take pics if you do. I have flown carry-on to sailing regattas before and not had room to pack my lifejacket. Let me tell you we got funny looks when walking onto a plane wearing ...

Re: Lopez Island dive sites?
Sounder If you're going to Lopez for the 4th weekend, plan on getting there a few days earlier and leaving a few days later - the ferries are slammed and you'll wait 8 hours just to be sent home because the last ferry has left and was full. It's fun to watch them set the beach on fire with firework...

I might be up for an early morning dive, like 7:30, in the Edmonds area on Friday before I head to work. I could bring a full LP-95, IP-85, or HP-100 for you if that would simplify logistics. The Underwater Sports store down the street could get you a fill after 10:00.

Unfortunately from what I read on TDS http://thedecostop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38132 there probably was a second CCR diver fatality last weekend. Reading of a diver fatality on one of the boards every couple of weeks is getting pretty old. I know that I am careful (Thanks for the gas planning ...

I have a fairly stout halibut rod I could bring up for you on Thursday. It is wound with 40lb Test but perhaps I could pick up 80lb cheap at the Joe's liquidation. I don't have much tackle beyond large lead head jigs.

Re: Don’t fear the reefer and attempted SMB hijacking
I was so confused on the safety stop when I saw Chad start playing tug of war with the lift bag. When I saw him yanking on the buoy line I was wondering if there was something about lift bags that I didn't know. I am sure glad that my SMB is marked "Diver Below". When I got to the surface ...
