Re: TITLOW & MAURY PILLING REMOVAL?!?!?!!!!
This is a complex issue. Creosote is a mixture of chemicals that include several carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons called cPAHs. These compounds do not break down very fast. You can see that they limit life because the old pilings always are hollow on the inside and leave a ring where th...

Me and my regular dive buddy will be there to help. This is a great looking buoy. Will be nice to have a flag buoy there again. Thanks for putting this together.

Re: PNW Reading Material
For the picture book category, I recommend Beneath Cold Seas by David Hall. It's a fairly new book - got a copy for xmas last year - great photo book, lots of things you get to see diving here.

Re: Youth classes
There are a lot of good instructors out there. I am biased, but the instructor I used is a high school teacher (chemistry, marine biology). He is very used to training teenagers (trained both my daughters who are now college age), and he regularly trains groups of his high school students. He is a M...

Re: Whee! Loreto!
Further to Tom's questions, we booked in advance with Dolphin for 3 days diving and used only one. They will either refund or save the other two days for our next trip. There are lots of hotels available. We stayed at the Hotel Luna, which is about 100 ft from the Dolphin dive center and a half bloc...

Re: Whee! Loreto!
I saw you two in Loreto after your husband had the cast on. Had no idea you were in the NWDC. I believe we talked a bit at the Dolphin Dive Center just before the hurricane. My wife and I had booked 3 days of diving but only got one in - went diving in the rain the day before the hurricane and had t...

Re: Place to get old seals replaced?
A reputable dive shop can do it. A lot of suits have glued seals. I would recommend Underwater Sports on Aurora, near Northgate. Will probably take about a week, depending on how busy they are.

We will not be able to make this one after all, have to change plans for tomorrow. Enjoy the diving - conditions should be great. Had at least 40 ft of viz at Redondo last Sunday afternoon.

Re: Newbie questions about gear
If you are free Saturday you should come to the club dive (check it out under Dive Planning). There will be lots of people with different gear you can check out and maybe even try out. If you rent gear you will definitely be able to find an experienced buddy that can show you around a great dive sit...

I will be there with Margaret, my wife. Will bring a side. We are still learning our way around Redondo - would like someone to show us around. Wanna see where all the lumpsuckers live.

Re: integrated weights for BP/Wing singles setup
I got a BP/W setup this spring. I use a OMS Comfort harness and the small Dive Rite weight pockets. I use 14 lb in the pockets and a Seasoft 12 lb belt. I think this setup works well with my drysuit. For warm water, only use the DR pockets, but I do not like the way they work with hard weights - the...

Re: Anybody here good at physics?
The only stupid question is the one you don't ask. The answer is both affect the speed you will travel due to current, at least until you reach terminal velocity. In general, the greater the mass, the acceleration created by the current will be slower, due to inertia. The more streamlined the cross ...

Re: Anybody here good at physics?
With trepidation, I will say I know something about physics (being an engineer). Even better, my daughter is a third year engineering student at UW, and she just finished her physics and calculus. Between the two of us we should be able to figure it out.

Re: Critter ID
Great. Thanks for the ID. Need to find a copy of Lamb's book. I have several, but none show this kind of critter. It's always nice to see something new and even better if I can figure out what it is. Dusty identified the Plain Fin Midshipman for me a couple weeks ago - saw another one last Friday in...

Found this at Redondo last night. One end was under the sand. It was about a foot or more long, about 1.5 inches wide. A clam?

Lost Mask
My wife dropped her mask in the entry area at Redondo tonight. Oceanic, with a yellow UWS cover on the band. Too much green stuff to find it.

Re: Minnesotan looking to taste some salt!
I can give you a recommendation for a great instructor or 2 from the north end who could get you what you need. If you are not dry suit divers, you should also seriously consider getting a dry suit and getting the certification. Dry suit diving is way more comfortable than wet suit, especially in th...

Re: Risky Behavior
Diving is risky, but so are a lot of other things that we do, such as driving a car or crossing a busy street. I started diving at 59, almost 4 years ago, and have accumulated about 370 dives. If you are in good physical condition, exercise (and stretch) regularly, and keep get regular checkups, I t...

Help with Fish ID
Found this guy last Friday evening at Redondo, after dark, at around 70 ft. Have not seen this guy before, cannot find in my books. These are not the best photos - did not have time to get a good shot. It was about 8-9 inches long. He stopped when I shined my light on him, then he stayed put and slo...
