Few more from the December Deception Pass dive. Re: Whidbey Island Critters

Deception Pass, December 6th. Sea star survey. The good news, no wasting sighted. I sure miss the colors of summer. The sea cucumbers are dormant, not feeding, so their red color is missing at the seascape, winter currents are not that friendly neither. https://photos.smugmug.com/Other/Deception-Pas...

Re: Dive Insurance ....

This is pretty disheartening for sure. Especially for divers that have relied on DAN for so many years and then... “Sorry you’re too old.” DAN seemed to rise above some of the issues that plague the industry. Before someone blasts me, I do understand risk, costs, etc... However, there are ways to p...

Re: Whidbey Island Critters

Jan, This is so cool. Your skill as an observer continues to astound me. Your historical vignette about Hirohito's passion for marine biology strikes a nostalgic chord for me. In 1969, while convalescing from wounds, I was assigned to the naval hospital in Yokosuka, Japan. Bike riding accelerated m...

Lagoon Point. When I saw a slug feasting on another slug, my first reaction was, another Hermissenda crassicornis, our common marauder which likes not only eat other nudibranchs, but has cannibal tendency to eat its own kind. I sent picture to my nudibranch expert friend Dave Behrens with a Thanksgi...

Re: Whidbey Island Critters

Early last year, the stormy weather deposited a piece of tree outside the seawall at Langley Harbor. Every time I dive there, I swim by it. It is amazing to watch the transformation as the shipworms consume that massive piece of wood... https://photos.smugmug.com/Fauna-Flora/Shells-clams/i-8fbS5TW/0...

Three months later, they are completely covered with tunicates... https://photos.smugmug.com/Other/Lagoon-Poin...

Keystone Jetty. I noticed that the Feather Boa kelp still hangs on in the shallows, in the past only a stranded specimen used to occasionally appeared on the jetty rocks, victim of storm and current from somewhere afar from Keystone. It would be interesting to see if they get foothold now. School of...

And third series of Possession Finger dives. Kelp crabs gathered on top of a rock wondering where all the kelp disappeared. Great shots, above and under. It proves, you don't have to go deep for beauty :)
Keystone was not in the cards on Saturday. And visibility on Sunday wasn't good, too much silt in the water column.

Re: Whidbey Island Critters

The old dock hauled off, some of the inhabitants refused to leave until their home left the water on trailer. Fortunately, gunnels and clingfish are accustomed to be exposed for little bit to air on low tides. We picked them up from the puddles in parking lot and returned them to the sea. Lion's man...

Re: Whidbey Island Critters

Curt, as you know so well, most of the stuff growing on docks and ship bottoms is not liked by the marine industry. Marine fouling does create its host of problems. But for a diver with a camera, they do offer food for the camera s memory card :nutty: Langley Harbor sea stars update. Some sea star w...
