I will be there, and will be bringing along a "Little Buddy" ... aka, a fairly new diver who I've been mentoring since he finished his OW class. Hopefully I can introduce him to some of you who he can start diving with, as I'm doing limited diving these days.

Re: Build a reef at Redondo

I'm having a hard time distinguishing between the existing reef structure and junk. I'd like a diver elevator at the end of the fishing pier. And, the elimination of fishing. :) I'll trust that's humor, because positioning the diving community against the fishing community would be a losing proposi...

There can be many reasons why he would have chosen a closer site ... usually driven by either schedule or conditions. I've dived up there many times, and learned to trust his judgment when he defers to take us to a preferred site.

Re: air consumption curiosity

Yes, using a drysuit will help you reduce your air consumption ... but not for the reasons you might think. Ultimately you'll end up diving more often, because you'll be more comfortable. And the more you dive, the lower your air consumption becomes due to improvements in technique that come with ex...

Re: Staying warm on a budget

I have an old Weezle Extreme undie I will give you for your budgeted $0 ... you just have to make your way to Federal Way to pick it up. It's well-worn and patched, but better than what you're using ... and should give you plenty of thermal protection for a winter, at least.

I disagree about the pushbutton. I just sent one back because the button failed after only two dives. I was told they've had some come back already. This is a new design, and I think it's got some bugs. I replaced it with the more standard twist-on version, as it's a proven, reliable design. That sa...

Every once in a while I hit the jackpot at Redondo. Last night was one of those times. Met my dive buddy Michael Wong at aroung 5:30, and hit the water about 6:15. Vis was crap down to about 50 feet, where it opened up to 10-12 feet, and got progressively (slightly) better as we went deeper. Found a...

Re: Where would you retire in the USA to live and Dive?

Comparing per County property taxes rates in the state vs diving potential, I'd say Port Townsend looks like a good balance. Stay out of the city of Port Townsend, it is a Seattle-esq socialistic nightmare on a smaller scale and will get worse as Seattle does. However, the surrounding communities a...

Second the shore diving ... I found it to be quite good. Besides the above mentioned, I really liked Makena Landing in Kihei and Black Rock in Lahaina. Ahihi Cove on the south side of the island is also quite nice.

Re: Maui Diving Recommendations

Dive shops in Maui are like coffee shops in Seattle ... they're on every corner. And which is "best" often depends on what part of Maui you're going to. If you're going to be in the Kihei area, I'd recommend B&B Scuba. What I liked about them is that they would at least make an effort ...

The northern Channel Islands are some awesome diving. If you ever get the chance to make it up to San Miguel, by all means take it.

That boat looks a lot fancier than the Peace, which is the one I was always going out on.

Nice pics ...

Re: Where would you retire in the USA to live and Dive?

Depends on what kind of diving you want to do. Northern Florida is pretty cheap if you're into cave diving. Or along the panhandle for diving out of Panama City or elsewhere along the Gulf Coast. The Carolinas for coastal wrecks. All of those places have reasonably easy access to Central American or...

I'm spending most of my time in Bremerton these days. Wouldn't mind finding some contacts and dive sites out on that side of the Sound. Most of my recent diving is being done with my girlfriend's son, who just recently got certified.

Several years ago there was an incident of a Korean ship coming into Barkley Sound and using divers to poach several hundred wolf eels.
