Re: Sea star die-off
Diving Townsend Bay yesterday, I was very pleased to see three young sunflower stars (Pycnopodia). No really big adults, but these smaller ones looked healthy.

Molded but with an applied neck... Probably 1890's - 1910's era, rough guess. Hard to say definitively without embossing.

Re: Thailand - Similan and Surin Islands
Great photos! I just returned from diving the Similans, Richelieu, and Koh Phi Phi last week with the Manta 8 liveaboard; you beat me to the Thailand review! Sadly, my review is not so positive. Background: I dove the same areas 23 years ago so I was interested in seeing what has changed since then....

Antarctic Artists and Writers Program
As some NWDC members know, I have a long association with the US Antarctic Program (USAP). Something that comes up almost every year is a National Science Foundation (NSF) solicitation for artists and writers. It's highly competitive, and applicants should be able to show a body of public work that ...

OK, not a bottle, but it is an un-damaged coffee cup, no cracks, no chips, found over the weekend in the silt at about 100'. As far as I can tell, this is the old ASC logo, which seems to have disappeared from 1927 - 1931 when the new logo showed up. Ah, now that could be put back in service! Beauty.

Point Hudson, 2/10. Windy with 9 inches of snow. Churned-up shallow, ~20ft vis at depth -- very nice!
Got kinda beat-up with the wave action on entry but otherwise a good dive. 42F water temp, yowsa.

10,000 lbs of lift would be roughly 25x 55-gallon drums. Yikes!
Must be a big boat on the bottom... Good luck.

Dive Rite TransPac II with Travel Wing, size XL
I'm selling my Dive Rite II harness and travel wing. The wing (retails for $379 new) has a new inflator hose and valve. Straps, D-ring, tank bands, all in great shape. I originally got the TransPac for drysuit diving but switched to a backplate. Since then I've only used the TransPac for tropical di...

What are these particulates, anyway? Not sure it's from runoff as we haven't had much lately.

Peninsula Dive Today? (Sunday, 12/30)
Very last minute. It's such a beautiful day I would love to get out for a dive. Currents in PT are sucky although we could probably do a bottle hunting dive in town near the ferry terminal. Or Pt Whitney near Brinnon. Or the Gardiner boat launch. I just want to blow bubbles! Maybe meet somewhere at ...

Dove Pt Hudson yesterday... never seen so much destruction under the water. Lots of debris, leaves, wood, kelp, trash. The eel grass beds were missing or mostly destroyed. Many metridium anemones and monster barnacles gone. Just a mess. :-(

Re: Seasoft Fined For Dumping Lead, Arsenic
It will depend on a ton of other variables (for aquatic life) because lead competes with ions like calcium and magnesium on gill surfaces - the resulting ionic imbalance is what causes toxicity (at a very high level). Since many of the lead salts appear insoluble, or at least not-very-soluble, I'd ...

Re: Seasoft Fined For Dumping Lead, Arsenic
The surface passivation of metallic lead in water is a mixture of lead salts including Cl-, OH- and SO4-. m The high surface area along with the grinding of the pellets in the bag together afterwards is leading that passivation to rub off. Yes, yes. You are correct. I went looking for relevant stud...
