Re: Cave line
Industrial grade zip-ties work really well, too, instead of cave line. You can still cut them if you had to, but they won't fray on you, and they're much easier to apply. Just make sure you get good ones, as the cheapies will snap or break too easily...

Re: Scuba Garage overhaul
Oh ... I have fairly high rafters in the garage so I built a pulley system with a couple of small pulleys, a piece of thin black iron pipe, and a pair of hose clamps. The ropes let me pull the pipe with suits on hangers into the rafters when not using them. It helps free up floor space to work under...

Re: Scuba Garage overhaul
I just use the plastic ones from Lowe's. That way, things don't rust but there is still plenty of airflow. Uninsulated garages work, but I find in winter I need to run a small box fan to help circulate air. Otherwise it takes forever to dry out. The other biggie for me is hot water. I just tap the b...

Re: Shooters
Just the basic one with the walnut stock...what kills me is the back order on magazines is until February. So I have to wait for my extras for quite a while. I also picked up a Bushnell 4-12x by 42mm scope and laser rangefinder. Knowing I was getting the scope meant that it really wasn't worth sprin...

Re: Shooters
Yep. They really mean it, too. I sense a story here...What'd you do, Josh? I need to find some time to sight in my new rifle this week, if my scope mounting adapter shows up. I got Shanghaied by a nice M1A that seemed to have my name written all over it when I went scouting for a Mini-30 ...

Re: Stainless steel grommets
It should be just fine. As renoun mentioned, I also just burn a hole through the webbing with a hot nail (heated in a torch - melting plastic is a great way to destroy a soldering pencil.) The webbing has always worn out or frayed faster than the hole has stretched... there's no stress on that hole,...

Re: Stainless steel grommets
Well brass is kind of weak, correct? Yes, but it's all relative. I have high pressure brass parts on my compressor filtration stack, and they're more than capable of withstanding the stresses, for instance. It's all about what you're using them for. The biggest problem with any grommet is installat...

Re: Shooters
Agreed. Plus, I thought the mini 30 was just a mythical beast, like a unicorn? They exist, but the bigger mag is even harder to find than the rifle itself. The 4-round flush-mount comes standard, but I prefer higher capacity. The thing is that the Russian/Yugo ammo is so cheap; yeah, it's crappy, b...

Clean with simple green and a small pump. You can get small 5V or 12V pumps off of eBay very cheaply. Search "sous vide pump" and you'll find some for $15 or less. Use a 50/50 solution of simple green and hot water in a bucket, and some cheap silicone tubing to adapt the pump to the hose y...

Re: EEZYCUT Trilobite line cutter
I've been using my ex-skydiving hook knife for years. They're cheap, disposable, and do exactly the same thing for a lot less money. I'm sure the Eezycut is nice, but the first time I saw it, I thought it was ridiculously priced, too. I still think that :) http://www.square1.com/manufacturers/square...

I have heard it is getting long. I have had all mine quit some time. Shortest paperwork time for me was 5 weeks. Longest was on a "pre-order" unit took about 4 mo from the time I ordered it and had it in my hand. I sat next to an ATF agent on a plane about a month ago, on my way back home...

Re: Shooters
I would totally be down for a 300 yard shootout. I just sighted in a trijicon optic I had to put on a riser on my AR (which is set up for distance) and am curious about the added parallax. Did fine at 100 yards but 300 would be a good test. Riser? Do tell. I put a Trijicon ACOG on my AR, too, but i...

<grumbles> I am waiting for the ATF to wade through the insane backlog of applications for a permit to own one right now. Everything is threaded and ready to go with the new AR I custom built for one of them, but all that's on there is a flash hider at the moment. I just need the government folks to...

Re: AL 80 Hydro
Couple years ago I shot a way outdated O2 cylinder that was full with a standard round. It was quit impressive and managed to catch my grass on fire. Well, now I know what to do with the thousand or so rounds of green-tip 5.56 I have lying around. My local range upgraded the traps and I can't use i...

The lack of reasonable flow out of a standard BC nipple may or may not be a concern on your rebreather, unless you're using it to plumb in the BOV and going full open circuit with it. That said, I agree that it's probably a bad choice for you :) A _much_ better choice is the CEJN fittings common on ...

Re: IP adjustment on Hog regs
No worries. Be sure to cycle it a bunch prior to the final dial in, once it's close, so that everything settles in neatly. Sounds like you've been using it an awful lot if it's due for a rebuild in a year... I'm envious as of late.

Re: IP adjustment on Hog regs
You need a pin spanner that takes off the end cap. The hex screw you're looking for is underneath the environment compensating diaphragm at the end. You have a ring, rubber diaphragm, and plastic disk with a pin sticking out of it, all held in place by that end ring. The wrenches are available from ...

Re: Thoughts on filling ones own tanks
Sensidine, Parker, and others make miniature diaphragm pumps which show up on eBay all the time. If you really want to CB, then it's pretty easy to plumb in a sample tube at the end of your mixing chamber, using the small diaphragm pump to pull a small bit of the gas mix out and feed it under flow t...

If you're around weekends for this, I may be up for it too. I'm unforunately on the road all week, every week, for work.
I'm heading to Florida in February for a week of sidemount caving (I can't believe I am not taking the rebreather...feels so weird!)

Yeah -- it's an eye opener to take a real class where it's not "You Pays Your Monies, You Passes Da' Class and Gets Da' C-Card." Whole different ballgame -- and one the recreational industry would be better off with. In fairness, though, the last time I went out out, I saw an instructor ki...

Re: Al 40s-brand question
I believe he's asking about adding to himself, not to the bottle, which would be a little weird. The short answer is you need to be neutral in whatever configuration you make it to your last stop wearing -- which means you have to figure out worst case and weight yourself appropriately. That means w...

Re: FS: ISC Megalodon
WOB is definitely best on Over The Shoulder (OTS) counterlungs. The other great feature is that it's almost impossible to flood a Meg- if you get water in the loop, you can force it out of the OP valve in the exhale CL. On that thread, BMCLs seem to be the "new, trendy thing." Besides the...

Re: KISS GEM For Sale
Don't have the stats in front of me, but the KISS Classic has a similar time to the Meg in cold water. And that jives with the Inspiration / Evolution+ which is 2.5kg (4 hours), and the Evolution (2.1kg / 3 hrs), although in practice -- and I don't recommend it -- I usually get 33-50% more out of i...

edit: how does 5.5 lbs of scrubber duration wise compare to other CCR units people are using around here? Josh? John? The _general_ rule of thumb is 1 kg per hour of duration, although that's running pretty hard... at European nanny-state testing levels. However, that's what they're spec'd at. Desi...
