a new nudibranch find (for me at least)

Jan K wrote:Nice find, it is also know as Ancula gibbosa.

Ancula gibbosa, or Ancula pacifica to those who think our Ancula is different than the east coast one. I prefer to think that ours are special :)

a new nudibranch find (for me at least)

Dove Titlow this morning with Andy and Mark. At the very end of the dive I found this tiny guy, an Ancula pacifica . I couldn't tell what it was just looking at it underwater as it was so small, but I decided to get a couple of shots of it to ID later on. http://www.hershmanphoto.com/Underwater-Phot...

Fox Island West Wall Nudibranchs

I went out to Fox Island west wall yesterday with my buddies Andy and Mark. Based upon our recent dives we weren't too sure about what the viz would be with the spring bloom. When we arrived we found a stiff south wind was blowing up a fair amount of chop on a very low tide, not the best conditions ...

Re: You can tell its Spring

Nice shots Dan, I agree on the white lines, They are just to pretty to resist. I hope this is a good sign for things to come. Last year was pretty dismal nudibranch wise. I had noticed that for a long time Redondo has been pretty sparse. I remember years back Redondo had lots of different nudies bu...

TTL sync vs. Fiber Optic

I've found myself looking at gear lately, not for myself but for a friend asking my advice on UW photography. I've long advocated the use of TTL sync cords. My early days of photography involved dealing with frustrating slave setups, where, even if the fiber optic setup worked correctly I still got ...

You can tell its Spring

You can tell its Spring when you start seeing Opalescent nudibranchs Hermissenda crassicornis . After a long absence we've spotted nice ones at both Redondo and Saltwater State Park these past two weeks. this nicely colored fellow was at Redondo last week. http://www.hershmanphoto.com/Underwater-Pho...

Re: Nudibranchs at Fox Island West Wall

Did you see any sand dollars? I still haven't seen any of those yet either (alive at least)! I see a Tolmie dive in your near future.... :) On the subject of nudis...saw around a thousand shaggy nudis at Illahee state park Saturday. No sand dollars, it's been a few years since I've seen those. :(. ...

Nudibranchs at Fox Island West Wall

What with all the reports of sea star loss, I thought it would be fun to post about some cool finds at one of our local sites. We haven't seen many nudibranchs lately, but we it the jackpot yesterday at Fox Island. The West Wall is hardly spectacular and can easily be missed, but it has the advantag...

Re: No Seastars remain at the Titlow Pilings

Another strange one is the small numbers of clown nudies. They used to be as common as the alabaster's now I only see a few here and there yes, they used to be all over the place at titlow, especially in higher current areas like Titlow. I think I only saw a half dozen all this past year. Also gone...

Scubak

We splashed at 11:00 and swam out to the shelves. A bit of current at first, but then it calmed down. There were a couple of octos in the shelves but otherwise they were the same as the pilings.

No Seastars remain at the Titlow Pilings

Just did a dive out at Titlow yesterday with my usual buddies Andy and Mark. During periods of extended cold dry weather the viz improves enough to haul out the dome port with the fisheye lens, especially at places where there's great structure such as the old Titlow ferry dock pilings. Over the yea...

Re: Sea star die-off

Went to Redondo yesterday after a month out of the water ( a bad cold, family trip to the east side of the mtns). Redondo seemed eerily dead, in a way that I've not seen before in ten years of diving at this location. Not much to see, I found a Heath's Dorid, but that was about it. The octo was stil...

Re: Wide Angle in the Hood

Cool shots! Even if you don't have a second strobe you can still get some great images by having a foreground subject lit up by your single strobe, then having your background subject visible as a silhouette against ambient light. I typically find myself looking for subjects where I can shoot upward...

Re: Lighting Options for Camera (non video)

I have found my pair of Ikelite DS160 strobes to be reliable and easy to use. I especially like the fact that the batteries are internal, you just rotate and release a clamp on the back end of the strobe and the sealed battery unit detaches, ready to be recharged. It even as a built in LED focus lig...

Re: Green Water Color Correction

The magenta 'green water' filters work best in a 'sweet spot' of around 15-20 feet depth. Above that and the colors get weird. Below that and there isn't enough red in the water to be visible no matter what kind of filter (as described by Mike). The only thing you can do is provide some artificial i...

Re: 3 dive video from God's Pocket Trip

Very cool! Were you using the green water filter during the whole dive? I find that they have a 'sweet spot' at about 20 feet where they work really well. Above or below that not so well.

I have got to get up there someday! :supz:

Hey Dan.... Nice video.....I quote my wife, "That's a nice intro!" I am not sure I am a fan of the embedded pictures in the video, kinda takes away from the video. What software are you using to cut it and edit it up? Its a sweet video, nice work. Thanks! I'm using Adobe Premiere 6. Dan

I'm not much of a videographer, but I've been meaning to do something with the GoPro I bought last year for a long time. What do you think?

Re: Hints & Tricks for wide angle photography with a Sealife

nwcid's response about Wide Angle is correct. You're not going to get a true 'wide-angle' from the Sealife 1400 unless there's some kind of wide-angle attachment that goes along with it. With the flat port, not even the 'widest' focal length will give you a wide angle shot. The best setups are those...
