Best Time for the San Juans?

We're trying to decide the best time to plan a trip up to the San Juans, probably with Bandito. There are some good opportunities in the June-July time, but that's usually when we have lousy viz thanks to algae and all that around here. Is the San Juan area subject to the same blooms? Is there a wor...

Re: Sea star die-off

We spent the last 4 days at Hood Canal, diving primarily Mikes' Beach Resort and Octopus Hole. We found lots of healthy young sunflower stars, and at least one full-grown one. Other stars look healthy as well, I didn't see a single wasted one. That was exciting to see.

"I Don't Always..."

This guy reminds me so much of the Dos Equis guy pose I can't stop laughing at it. But I'm having a hard time coming up with a good caption. So I'm asking for help; everybody have at it, let's see what we can do.

Re: Dump valve woes.

If there's sand in it, that could be the problem. I'd rinse it thoroughly in every possible direction with the valve both open and closed, and then see how it does. If that doesn't work, I'd probably be inclined to go with d).

We wondered if that was the case. Well, that just means we have to go back there again. Aw, shucks.

Thanks!

Back to TTN

After our little body-surfing adventure last week, 3 of us from the group went back today, determined to find the cabin cruiser. The problem last time was, we dropped way too far away. The waves were so bad, we swam to the closest object, which happened to be some other diver's buoy. Today we starte...

Re: Three Tree Map Needed

That's pretty much what we did. It's possible we just didn't get to it because one of our group started getting low on air; that was the main reason I had to turn the dive. It was also a fairly super high tide, so we may have been too shallow at 60-ish fsw. Still, a map with compass headings would b...

Three Tree Map Needed

We tried to find the cabin cruiser today and missed it. I'm trying to find a map of the site that shows the directions to it, but can't seem to find one online. They all stop well short of it in that direction. Anybody know where there's a more complete one?

Re: New Boat at Redondo?

I personally like the sharks, they're a nice addition. I also dive frequently with a young man who has Aspberger's Syndrome, and he really enjoys going down and playing on them. I don't see a problem with them, but to each his own.

Re: Free Fixer-Upper Dive Boat to Good Home

The starter has definitely had it. Pieces of it fell off in my hand when I touched it, and when I tried to take the wire loose the entire shank was turning. As far as the engine, I hope I was as straight with you as possible about that. It may still pop loose, because as far as I know, there weren't...

Re: Free Fixer-Upper Dive Boat to Good Home

Let me reiterate that the ONLY reason I gave this up is because my health went south. I was working on it and had plans for it and was on my way to making them happen, but wasn't physically able to finish the job. And from what I've seen of the man who took it, he knows what he's doing and what he's...

Re: New Boat at Redondo?

I used to know the people who originally put the VW down there and they were VERY careful to remove pollutants, gas, oil etc from it before they put it in the water. Just a quick note from the loose-ends department.

I love how upbeat and encouraging you guys are...whatever you do, don't give the guy any encouragement or hint at the fun he might have once it's going. That would just be too much.

The winner is bschnabel. He came and got it over the weekend. And he's a winner; there's loads of potential there. I don't regret taking it; I do regret not being able to finish getting it in shape. I hope he can.

Janna, we didn't see any motion at all. That's part of the reason it didn't look like a bivalve. Gonna have to go back and take yet another look. Aw, shucks :tomnic:

But isn't the rock scallop a bivalve? I don't think this one is. Feel free to correct me, as several of my critter books seem to have gone into hiding.

critter1.jpg critter2.jpg critter3.jpg I cannot decide what this is. Kathy and I examined it for several minutes and still have no idea. For the life of me, it looks like some kind of abalone. It's about 6" across, and though it's not visible in the photos, it had a raised foot, which is to sa...

Re: Free Fixer-Upper Dive Boat to Good Home

The helm is just disassembled so I could get the steering cable out. The cable is shot, but it's just a matter of replacing it and putting the helm back together in the process. The boat itself is perfectly seaworthy, the issues are mechanical things like the steering cable.

Free Fixer-Upper Dive Boat to Good Home

This boat has loads of potential, and my best guess (no guarantees) is that some elbow grease and about $1000-2000 would have it up and going again. Unfortunately, I no longer possess that elbow grease. I've done some work on it, but I'm not going to be able to finish the project. My health has dete...
