Attack of the Sea Slugs Video

This was neat -- a time-lapse video of nudis eating a sea pen.

Re: Oriskany Sunk Deeper: Safer or Not?

130ft max has to do with the no decompression limit. Hmm. I'm not sure I buy that. According to the NOAA 1999 no-deco air table (or table of your choice) the NDLs for 130fsw and 140fsw are both 10 minutes, and 5 minutes at 150fsw. So why cut it off at 130? Using this table, you should be able to di...

Re: Oriskany Sunk Deeper: Safer or Not?

If you are tech certified why would you dive a single AL 80 to that depth any way. In some locations you may not have a choice, AL80s may be the only thing available. Then it's your call. Something that nobody has mentioned... The traditional 130ft recreational depth limit has always seemed like an...

I'm the "nothing" respondent. I've tried SealSaver (nice) and powder (okay). Haven't tried KY. In the end, it didn't seem to matter what I used. :bootyshake: :bootyshake: :bootyshake: :bootyshake: :bootyshake: :bootyshake: :bootyshake: :bootyshake: :bootyshake: :bootyshake: :bootyshake: :b...

Re: Everything you ever wanted to know but were afraid to ask

Lighter fare... Have you ever taken a liquid with you (water, juice, coffee, etc) while diving, and successfully been able to take a drink without getting a mouth full of seawater? If so, how did you do it? Does a Camelback work? How 'bout a plastic bottle with a pull-top spout, like bicyclists use?

A non-tech dive is where, if things go wrong, I can immediately surface from wherever I am, chuck the gear in the back of the car, and end the day at a brewpub with my buddy.

Everything else is tech.

Re: Funny orca vid

You're spot on. They're lucky people, never mind the penguin. Orcas around Antarctica hunt seals by flipping over ice floes, tossing the basking seals into the water. To my knowledge they've never flipped a boat or attacked people, but had they been serious about catching that penguin (and not just ...

Re: Oriskany Sunk Deeper: Safer or Not?

Anyone diving in warm water will be faced with a similar choice as almost all operators provide only aluminum 80's. (I'm thinking The Blue Hole in Belize... It's amazing, I was just about to say the same thing! To see anything at the Blue hole you have to hit about 140+fsw. If you dive-travel a lot...

Re: Oriskany Sunk Deeper: Safer or Not?

My issue with the OP's question is the Al80. Not enough gas. I stipulated the AL80 because the article talks about the dive operators' concerns: Will sport divers avoid going because of the added depth? The assumption I made is that the typical sport diver going out on one of these boats would be u...

Oriskany Sunk Deeper: Safer or Not?

I thought this was an interesting comment from an Undercurrent Online email I received (I don't have the full story): ====================== The U.S.S. Oriskany in Pensacola, Florida ====================== It's a great wreck dive, though a bit deep for sport divers. The flight deck is at 135 feet --...

You know I'm just pulling your chain, right? I totally understand wanting to be in control of the decisions and knowing what's going on inside the black box. :salute: But equipment evolves. Generally speaking, I've noticed that making things simpler often results in improved safety. Maybe that's the...

Hey Samson, you're getting good advice here. I would add that I had the same problems when I first started out. What helped a lot was... 1. Having a drysuit that fits properly. One that's too baggy will be hard to control. 2. Getting my weighting right. It's so finely tuned now that I don't bother t...

Cocoview.

I've stayed at Anthony's Key a couple of times and really enjoyed it. If I were to go back, however, Cocoview appears to be more geared for serious divers... but they all go to the same spots.

Re: Dive Log question

Your dive log is for your benefit, so what you choose to log is ultimately up to you. Occasionally some resort or dive operation may ask to see it, but they shouldn't care what you enter into it. Generally the only thing they want to know is when you did your most recent dive and a rough idea of you...

No dilemma.

Come-hither looks may be unpredictable, and if you don't take advantage of them they may never come back.

Seabeck this afternoon was great. There was a warm, murky layer of runoff for the first 20ft -- below that the vis was beautiful, maybe 30ft.
