Re: Octopus Hole or Sund Rock
I'll also add that I've never had problems with crowds underwater at Sund Rock. Even when the parking was packed with a class, I didn't see a whole lot of other divers underwater. The problem can be getting one of the limited parking spaces that you're effectively paying a per person entry fee for.

Re: Octopus Hole or Sund Rock
The time I dove Octopus Hole I had trouble finding the turnout. I eventually found it but I drove past it at least once and ended up in the wrong turnout at first. I seem to recall that there are signs noting that the area is protected and its name ("Octopus Hole"), but the signs are prese...

Re: Viz Reports Thread
Vis this morning at both Alki Junkyard (at low tide around 9am) and Cove 2 (more towards noon) was the best I've seen in a while--a solid 30ft. Even at 110fsw, there was a surprising amount of ambient light.

Also, you might try giving Eugene Skin Divers Supply a call to see if they have anything planned, probably once it gets closer.

Re: Need OR dive advice on where to go when I'm out there...
Clear Lake is pretty neat. Not much life but the underwater geology and clear water are the attraction. It's about a 1.5 hour drive from Eugene and only about 3000ft elevation which makes it a more practical day trip. Waldo (which I haven't done) is supposed to have even clearer water, but being at ...

Re: Viz Reports Thread
Viz at the club dive today at Redondo wasn't as bad as I'd feared. Only <3 ft down to about 15ft, then it opened up very decently. Probably 15ft. At least when you weren't in the silt cloud from the OW class going on near the pipe off the MAST center pier.

Re: Viz Reports Thread
Redondo this afternoon was horrible. I'd say less than 3ft of vis. At 70ft, it still hadn't opened up so we thumbed the dive. Beautiful day on the surface though.

I saw a couple Janolus and a couple shaggy mouse nudis at Redondo a couple weeks ago too. Definitely good to see more life coming back after a very quiet winter.

Re: TTL sync vs. Fiber Optic
My understanding is as follows but somebody can correct me if I'm wrong… You need a TTL converter to get TTL over a wired connection. Ikelite puts the electronics for these in all of their housings (and/or strobes?) but for other housing/strobe combos, you need to buy an often bulky and expensive fi...

Re: Underwater camera basics..
I agree with what Gregp said above about underwater photography being a more challenging type of photography right out of the gate. In local waters especially, you're dealing with low light conditions. Once you start using a strobe, the schmutz in the water can easily lead to backscatter. It can be ...

Just in case shops or people don't recognize the name, I think they're also sold under the name 'Kubi'.

Re: Computers
Anybody know what the difference is between the VEO 100 to 250 series VS the 1.0 to 3.0 series? I've been using the 180's and 250's and you can buy them for less than $200 in a console. The x.0 series replaced the xxx series. They all should be reliable computers. The 100 has no nitrox or backlight...

Keep in mind that this is an article in the food section of the New York Times Magazine (a supplement to the Sunday paper). It's not really about accurate reporting so much as entertaining people who like to read about food. All publicity is good publicity for Seattle restaurants and GPOs I suppose.

Re: I need help with my dry gloves please
I have the round rings (Glove Lock QCP) on my old suit and the oval rings (Antares) on my new suit. When I first got the round rings, I distinctly remember spending 5 minutes in the parking lot struggling to get them to twist off. After that I lubricated them with the provided chapstick thingee alon...

8/15 @ Mukilteo Lighthouse: Probably only 3ft on the surface, opening up pretty decently to about 20ft below about 50fsw

Re: Best computer for a beginner?
I used a Geo 2.0 for about 2 years and still occasionally use it as a backup. Its two flaws are: 1. When the band breaks (less than a year on mine, about 2 on my partner/buddy's), you can't replace it with bungee and I've found it very difficult to order a replacement. None of the online shops or Oc...

Re: HELP!! Sixgill Sightings Database - please report sighti
Tonight Mark, Justin and I saw what appeared to be the same juvenile at Redondo in about 85fsw. With tons of divers looking for the six gill and tons of non-divers out for fishing enjoying the sunny day, the worst parking situation I've ever seen at Redondo was going on when we arrived (no street pa...

Installing the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack should make MS Photo Gallery able to read these files.

This afternoon/evening (Thursday 7/18) at Three Tree Point North: terrible 3-5ft vis all the way down to about 65 feet, then opening up fairly ok to maybe 15-20ft below that. Basically like a night dive at depth. Lots of egg yolk jellies all over the place too.

Re: Viz Reports Thread
Did 2 dives on 7/2. On the first one at Alki Pipeline on a fairly high low-tide around slack before flood, viz was terrible--prob 3-5ft most of the way down, opening up a bit at 30fsw near the pipe outflow. Second dive at Cove 2 had similarly crappy viz but since we went deeper, we were able to get ...

Re: Viz Reports Thread
Cove 2 this evening looked pretty good off the dock, but once under the water around 8:30pm it was only about 10ft of vis. Pretty clear in the first couple feet above a halocline, then cruddier down a ways before opening up a little bit at depth. Not great but manageable.

Re: Viz Reports Thread
Vis at Three Tree Point North this afternoon was cruddy but manageable. I'd say 5-10ft with it being a little bit better at depth than in the shallows. Lots of chunks in the water as opposed to cloudiness. There was also some surf--nothing too bad, but more than the absolutely nothing we normally ha...
