I was unable to find any that didn't have somebody's advertising, until I came across these online at DiveGearExpress.

Tube Worms

It seemed like there were more tube worms than usual around Cove 2 yesterday. The additional working distance of the lens/port combo I was trying out was also much more effective at not scaring them off, so maybe I'm just biased. Either way, I got some interesting shots. Each of these has what looks...

Re: RE: Redondo 3/3

Thanks for all the flattering comments everybody. It was definitely a risk taking the wide angle (btw, Canon T2i with Tokina 10-17 in the 100mm Zen dome). There's been plenty of times in similar circumstances where I've cursed choosing wide angle in our local waters. Good to see it pay off this time...

I guess I just always assume when I see an octo out in the open that it's a Red and that GPOs exist only huddled underneath boats ;) But of course it's a GPO now that I look at it again.

Redondo 3/3

We had some really lovely viz this afternoon at Redondo. Upon arrival I was a little bit worried because of the combination of low tide and some wind-driven heavy chop, but the sun came out, the wind let up and it turned into a really nice afternoon. Going wide angle really paid off with some very n...

Re: RE: I need a new host for my pictures ...

I'm using Flickr, but direct linking isn't Flickr's strong suit. I'm a dev, so I don't mind using Chrome's inspector to find an img tag, but that's not really everyone's optimal workflow. There are some handy controls for generating BBCode or HTML in the Action menu on Flickr that make this not too...

Re: Great service for housing repairs

I'm always kind of amazed by others' experiences with Backscatter. Everybody seems to love them and gets great service. I've only had frustration with them personally. In one case I sent my housing off to them (per their request), only to call 2 weeks later to find out they hadn't even gotten starte...

Here's the key post about it but there are others if you search around on ScubaBoard.

Cheap, used drysuit beats a new, fancy wetsuit any day around here.

Re: RE: Oceanic VT 4.0 vs VT 4.1 - Is there a difference?

There was some patent lawsuit over the feature which allows you to monitor your buddy's gas. The VT4.1 just removes this feature. There was a thread on scubaboard where somebody from Oceanic confirmed this but I'm too lazy to look for it right now.

Re: Outrageous Deal on Camera and Housing

I looked at this and then did some review reading. Slow and erratic focusing keeps coming up often enough to think this may be a real issue. My wife had a Nikon that had similar reviews and indeed ended up having problems on dives. Drove her nuts. This makes me hesitate. Any users have comments/exp...

a) Gear purchases This year: The big one was getting a can light but I also finally rounded out my tropical gear with my own 3mm wetsuit and a pair of diverite exp fins. Next year: Thinking about upgrading my drysuit but no resolution commitment there yet. b) Training Sadly nothing this year but I'm...

Re: Warm water fins

I used my F1s in warm and fresh waters and had problems being foot heavy. When I was in Florida last spring I picked up the DR EXPs and they were great. Light, good thrust, and maneuverable. They will always be my warm water fins from now on. That's good to hear. My concern about the foot heaviness...

Re: RE: Warm water fins

I just picked up a pair of the DiveRite EXP fins for the same purpose. They're definitely less buoyant and lighter than my Hollis F1s. I gave them a spin the other day at cove 2 but I'll have to wait to see how they really work next month in Bonaire. They're not super stiff but seemed to work well. ...

Re: Viz Reports Thread

Cove 2 was about 25ft or so for our first dive at around 3:30pm then noticeably less (15ish) for the second dive at 5:30ish. Still great vis considering it was probably the first time I've dove in the rain in over 3 months!

Re: RE: Lens help

I wouldn't bother buying a port for the 18-105. "All around" lenses on the surface don't work well underwater. Because light drops off fast in water, you need to be close to your subject for decent shots unless you're shallow in clear water. To get really close there are only 2 options--ul...

Weekend Getaway on Hood Canal

Some non-diving friends, Justin and I went out to Hood Canal for a long weekend of diving and relaxing. Edmonds UWP was about 10ft or so at around noon (near high tide), a little worse in the shallows and a little better at depth (only got down to 35fsw). Not amazing but definitely diveable.

Re: Busted lens port on my housing

B&H has it listed for $250, probably because they're trying to clear out older stock. Other places seem to be charging $325. You can always shoot an email over to Ikelite service & repairs first to see if they'll be able to repair it at any sort of reasonable price.

Re: Undergarment questions

I have the T200 that I use with my compressed neoprene suit. It's fine for local waters although I get a little cold in the winter. I can't imagine that the 100 with a shell suit would be very warm. Bare has charts on their website for recommended temperature ranges for suit/undergarment pairings.
