Re: Trying out the new A-640 at Les Davis

One big secret of the A640 is never use the zoom! If you are in Macro even a tiny bit of zoom will cause the camera to not focus. But then that is true of all Canons. I think this is very good advice - zooms in the point and shoots are not kind to image quality and they tend to cause the aperture t...

Re: Viz Reports Thread

Had a couple of cylinders with partial fills to burn so I took them to Canoe Pass yesterday. Got coordinates of some derelict fishing gear (1x gill-net, 3x pots) and documented the damage via some sad photos. Visibility was around 4'. The wind was pushing some major surf in under the bridges as the ...

Re: anyone heard more about the Langley situation?

I hadn't heard anything more about this Kriss, but a bunch of us went to the public meeting about this project when the plans were first made available. Have to say that at the time it looked a little bit ambitious and I wondered whether it would really make financial sense in the long term. Since t...

Re: Dive Ladder Recovery

This reminds me of the ladder from a friend's boat. One day we were spearing Lingcod at a favorite spot - me, the guy who owned the boat and another good friend. The ladder is one of those fold out affairs - the type that hooks over the gunnel. Well, after the last diver returns and boards, the ladd...

Re: Primary lights for new divers

I don't agree about the 10w. I still take my 10w salvo out from time to time, and I'm still impressed by how great it is. I only bought my 21w because I couldn't stand being upstaged by Calvin. I agree that beyond 21w, it's just overkill. I think that past a certain point you're just lighting up th...

Re: Primary lights for new divers

(you want to avoid anything using CR123s, which are very expensive to buy locally, and may be hard to source somewhere when you are traveling) There is definitely some truth to that - good advice. I would add though, that I use two small lights on my camera rig as focus lights and they each use two...

Re: fantastic thread on drysuit undergarments

I've been diving some Under Armor under 200g Thinsulate forever, but lately it's just not getting it. I think the undergarment I wear (including the 200g Thinsulate) has lost its (admittedly minimal) loft. Things have changed with my mass/volume ratio too, so I think it is time to layer up and go do...

Re: Deception Pass - Sunday, Feb. 13

Good idea, whatevah . . . I'll have to see if I can scare up a boat tender. Choose someone who won't get flustered when an eddy spins the boat around in its drift and pushes it toward the wall - they might break the key off in the ignition. Ask me how I know :p Maybe I will see you there - we shoul...

Re: Tacoma Equipment Dive on Saturday

Going back through the thread I find that I am left feeling curious about something. I want to know more about why some felt that an 80cf cylinder was not enough for a "safe" dive with a maximum depth of 100'. I know of three guidelines that people might use to make decisions on that part ...

Re: Tacoma Equipment Dive on Saturday

Someone comes onto the board and posts about a disorienting situation they had underwater. They ask what might have caused it. They casually mention that while they were disoriented and unable to see, their dive buddy swam away ... and that they had to end the dive solo. They didn't see anything wr...

Speaking of Aquarium visits... anyone planning to go to the Vancouver Aquarium for their Diver's Weekend on Jan 22/23 ? I've been trying to get there for years but I always get some kind of other plans conflicting. This year is no different: conflicts. But I am not giving up hope - might still be ab...

Re: Deception Pass - Sunday, Feb. 13

Y'all have a great dive! Maybe we'll make the next one . . . If the weather's good, consider diving from your own boat - the Cornet Bay boat launch rocks and it will be all but deserted that day. Or you could walk down the path from the bridge parking lot - it's not that bad if you plan to dive sha...

I'm going to be serving on the Oversight Committee for the Pugest Sound Recreational Fishery Enhancement Fund for 2011 and 2012, so would appreciate any thoughts/ideas you might have about how that fund should be allocated. How much coin are we talking about here and are there a list of proposals b...

Re: Deadline TODAY! Neah Bay protected areas comments due

Just a quick follow-up on this topic. The commission met early in December and the WDFW folks presented the information gathered via the advisory board and public input. The department recommended that further rule-making efforts around options 2 and 3 be suspended and that all further efforts in th...

Re: Deception Pass - Sunday, Feb. 13

Tidal conditions look good that day. Lu-Jac's Quest (out of Skyline) will take groups there, and they generally dive the north side of Deception Pass (ie, the south side of Pass Island), which is a pretty good section of wall to explore. I think you'll probably want to be in the water around 9:25am,...

Re: Viz Reports Thread

I think I'm just spoiled by the density and variety of life up north - the colorful invertebrates coating the rocks, really huge folded and inverted rocky structure and endless fields of plumose anemones are a lot more rewarding to me. If I'm going to shore dive, it's a more scenic and shorter driv...

I don't know if you've given it consideration already, but it might be worth checking what's in the water. Sometimes places like that have been used to dispose of some pretty nasty stuff. I would hope that if the city is using it as a swimming area that they have already done that, but I suppose wi...

Re: Anyone Ever Dive the Tenino Rock Quarry Pool?

Excellent adventure - thanks for the write-up. That silt can be really strange - almost like it's still in suspension. SAR dives are often conducted almost entirely by "grope" - one lake I dove in had silt on the bottom so soft and deep that the only way I could tell that I'd accidentally ...
