There is rarely amazing viz in Puget Sound but better viz is when it has not been raining for a while and at sites with less runoff. Sometimes the best viz is late summer after all of the plankton bloom is done for the year and before the rains begin. Northern Vancouver Island usually has great viz ...

As was pointed out, it's more enjoyable if you do it on a high tide as it's shallow to begin with. I think it's much better as a night dive. When I do it I start at the beginning of the pipeline but I take a compass heading as well. I follow it until the sandy area where the pipeline disappears for ...

Had a great dive with the Pringster at Three Tree! :supz: Thanks Brian! Ended up only doing one dive... equipment issues slowed our first entry. The octo is back at the boat! \:D/ At least I think it's him... he looks VERY healthy! While we were circling the boat taking tons of pics another diver a...

Re: Snow diving?
Keep doing the snow dances. My district is only 2 hours late as of 10:00 PM on Monday night. I am hoping for more snow and a no school day. If so, I will get to do my first dives in the snow. Ok, so I won't actually be diving IN the snow unless I slip and fall, how embarrassing), but walking throug...

Please don't confuse your opinion with fact. WTF? I have been biting my tongue so far but this is the last straw. There are 3 PADI standards spelled out for this course and this class violated all three: 1) Max penetration shall be no more than 130ft from the surface horizontal and vertical depth c...

We didn't run any line. Just short little penetrations and then in the Saskatchewan we just went really really slow follow the leader style. Vis was really really clear so it wasn't an issue for lines... Line is SOP for overhead environments, I won't enter any overhead without line. Speed is not th...

Cephla and I are meeting at the Safeway at 12:30 and will hook up with the rest of the 2pm group when they arrive. Anyone got cross streets for the Safeway or easy directions to 3-Tree north? I've only been there once. I'm sure there are better directions somewhere but off the top of my head here g...

Re: The Monolith
Finally got a chance to go to it this evening with Richard and his wife. Saw three octos, a skate, a stubby squid, a bunch of gunnels, a sailfish sculpin, and a bazillion rat fish. The monolith itself had evidence of something really big living under it, there were a bunch of crab shells lying arou...

I'm assuming it's a latex neck seal...some people are allergic to latex and another possibility if it's something black rubbing off as opposed to an allergic reaction is that pollution (oils in the water) can cause your neck seal to deteriorate. For a while every dive I did at Cove2 would leave my n...

Hi -- It's a nice wall down in tacoma, lots of wolfeels and octopus. can be a bit hazardous with the narrows currents and boat traffic though, needs to be planned carefully. Also you need to be polite to the neighbors as the shore access is in a neighborhood. saw lots of wolfeels on eggs tonight......

Hi Doug, I didn't mean to suggest that you were not a thinking diver. I know that you are in fact a thinking diver so some of my comments were meant to be general in nature and just to make this a more interesting conversation. I agree that newer divers should take the conservative approach in all a...

Sure, in some marginal area depending on the agency you may or may not need helium. DSAT is still diving deep air in their introductory tech class (150-160 ft for the final dives, 2 deco gases, no helium). A GUE curriculm has you on helium as shallow as 80ft. NAUI has a recreational He mix 26/17, a...

So Gray, how would one accumulate a full set of facts to make decisions about the need for helium? The only thing that will truly illustrate the need is f*cking something up royally at depth. Ala what happened on the U-who 13 years ago. Those people paid for their improper (IMO) gas choices with th...

Is there any danger when you encounter a seal? How close will they come to you? Do they dive at the bottom or at the middle between the surface and bottom? At Cove 2 they will bump into you. There you will encounter them close to the bottom as they are using your dive lights to hunt the shiner perc...

Just to add that the Cape Breton is right next to this dive and it's quite usual to do both ships in one day. Both are in approximately 130 fsw. If you go into the Cape Breton it's actually 10' deeper since it's dug itself 10' into the bottom. The deck is at 85 fsw and the wheelhouse is above that s...

Let's choose a location. Something around 100 feet max with most time spent at 50 or 60 feet. (Similar to Cove 2) What time would be good? I would probably rent another tank for 2 dives with a break between the two. When you say 2 tanks, do you mean both in one dive or for two dives? I never dove w...
