There is rarely amazing viz in Puget Sound but better viz is when it has not been raining for a while and at sites with less runoff. Sometimes the best viz is late summer after all of the plankton bloom is done for the year and before the rains begin. Northern Vancouver Island usually has great viz ...

As was pointed out, it's more enjoyable if you do it on a high tide as it's shallow to begin with. I think it's much better as a night dive. When I do it I start at the beginning of the pipeline but I take a compass heading as well. I follow it until the sandy area where the pipeline disappears for ...

Re: Snow diving?

Keep doing the snow dances. My district is only 2 hours late as of 10:00 PM on Monday night. I am hoping for more snow and a no school day. If so, I will get to do my first dives in the snow. Ok, so I won't actually be diving IN the snow unless I slip and fall, how embarrassing), but walking throug...

Gray- With all due respect, I believe Richard did state some facts...he quoted specific materials from the PADI manual. I don't know if Holly's class was a PADI class or NAUI, or SSI, etc. I can tell you that NAUI's S & P requires proficiency with the following before the open water/practical a...

Finally got a chance to go to it this evening with Richard and his wife. Saw three octos, a skate, a stubby squid, a bunch of gunnels, a sailfish sculpin, and a bazillion rat fish. The monolith itself had evidence of something really big living under it, there were a bunch of crab shells lying arou...

I'm assuming it's a latex neck seal...some people are allergic to latex and another possibility if it's something black rubbing off as opposed to an allergic reaction is that pollution (oils in the water) can cause your neck seal to deteriorate. For a while every dive I did at Cove2 would leave my n...

As has already been posted, sometimes they make it until the eggs hatch and sometimes they don't. It's not that unusual. Out of the thousands of eggs that do hatch only 2 or 3 will make it to year one.

Hi Doug, I didn't mean to suggest that you were not a thinking diver. I know that you are in fact a thinking diver so some of my comments were meant to be general in nature and just to make this a more interesting conversation. I agree that newer divers should take the conservative approach in all a...

Sure, in some marginal area depending on the agency you may or may not need helium. DSAT is still diving deep air in their introductory tech class (150-160 ft for the final dives, 2 deco gases, no helium). A GUE curriculm has you on helium as shallow as 80ft. NAUI has a recreational He mix 26/17, a...

Is there any danger when you encounter a seal? How close will they come to you? Do they dive at the bottom or at the middle between the surface and bottom? At Cove 2 they will bump into you. There you will encounter them close to the bottom as they are using your dive lights to hunt the shiner perc...

Just to add that the Cape Breton is right next to this dive and it's quite usual to do both ships in one day. Both are in approximately 130 fsw.
