Re: Anti-spearos, why? NHZ please.

I think this is a great discussion, and I would like to chime in on a few points. First, I don't know anything about the life history of GPO, but the 100#+ salmon were killed off by dams, not fishermen (Google "June Hogs Grand Coulee Dam" for history). Second, while rockfish stocks in part...

Re: GoPro Hero2 w/ Eye of Mine Flat Port Housing

Aargh! First off, thanks for raising the bar. I made seven dives last month with my GoPro, but your videos are more impressive than what I got. I guess I need to start thinking about lighting (I blew some cool footage of several sea turtles on a night cave dive due to low light). Second, what's with...

Re: Any Commercial Fishermen here that dive?

Okay, I'll "bite". I am a novice diver that happens to own a small commercial boat with HMS (Albacore) licenses. The boat is being re-powered, so I might not be back in the water this season. What type of fish are we talking? Food, bait, or other? Live transport is tricky and requires spec...

Re: Cheap color filter for green water?

I haven't gotten a chance to try mine yet, but I just got the Pursuit Diving case (glass flat lens) and red filter for my GoPro. If the red filter doesn't blow up my skirt, I think I'll try the Magic green-water filter next. I'll let you know as soon as I get to test my red filter.

Re: newport dive video

Thanks for the tips. I'm afraid the whole point for me is to not touch this camera once I get in the water (I'm usually carrying a still camera, a speargun, or clamming / crabbing gear, so my hands are full when the action is happening), so I'll be starting with one big file. I do like the idea of b...

Re: My new GoPro setup (with pictures)

I'm just getting started on this project. My goal is to set up a hands-free video system to document my dives. I am going with the GoPro HD Hero with the flat lens and filter from Pursuit Freediving. I dedided I wanted a mask-mount so that I would film exactly what I see, so I started digging throug...

Hey Aaron, what software are you using to edit those? I just got a GoPro to try to document some of what I see, but the editing seems like a nightmare. Maybe I should go dig around the photography page a little....

Re: Anchor Rope

Lots of good info here. Danforth anchors are really only good in sand. I use an 8' coated 5/8" yacht chain and a 20# anchor with my 22' boat. 3/8 or 7/16 rope is the way to go, and make sure that it is solid braided nylon (the cheaper version with a foam / poly core doesn't work well). A good q...

I had never dove the mid-jetty before, so I can't say if the entry is different than before. I think most of the work was out at the end, but the surge was too big to enter beyond the CG tower.

Barview / Garibaldi Report

Alright, I finally got wet today (first time this year). A buddy and I hit the Barview Jetty this afternoon at high-slack. Vis was horrible (1-2' until below 30', then 3-4' on the bottom; had to turn on my light at 35'). The good news is that there are a ton of big crabs right at the base of the jet...

Re: Spear Gun or Hawiian Sling?

I love polespears for rockfish. I have a pneumatic gun for Lings, but it is a PITA to load underwater. My buddy likes his JBL 38 special band gun (only uses one band; doesn't use safety, but doesn't stretch band into place until ready to hunt). With the polespear, I am ditching the paralyzer tip and...

Re: Club Dive Poll - Please tell us if you were there!

I'm bummed. After missing the one early last spring, I promised myself that I'd make the next one. Unfortunately, I have had other stuff going on the past few months and haven't even been wet since March. This is my first time back on this site in a few months, and I'm sad to see that I missed a cha...

Are you in Mill Creek, OR (near Salem), or Mill Creek, WA? Also, does it "flip-up", or do you just remove it when not in use?

Okay, NWBobber was absolutely correct; there is not a bay at the Necanicum. I was headed down there for something else yesterday, so I took RiverPirate along to check it out. We jumped in right behind the high school. Our max depth was 6', and the current was stronger than expected (we were there ju...

Nice! I thought about going there last Saturday, but we tried the Lumber Dock at Garibaldi instead. It sounds like we made the wrong decision (we hit the middle of the incoming tide and only had about 1-1.5' of vis on the bottom; we surfaced twice because we got separated, and once because I got dis...

Trade Tanks?

I have a nice Faber "Sea Pearls" LP80 tank with pro valve that I would like to trade for another LP95 or bigger tank with yoke valve or pro valve. This is currently out of hydro (original hydro was '03, hasn't been used since it ran out in '08), but I can have it inspected if the trade tan...
