Re: How much of the underwater world is dive able
Let's assume you stick to the traditional recreational limits, 130fsw. To calculate the 'diveable' area of the ocean, well, close to 100% is diveable, yes? That assumes it's not covered in ice (or else you have a big chain saw or an ice breaker). To calculate the 'diveable' volume of water, assume t...

Re: DCS Hit, DAN, & Virginia Mason
Domer, well done. :smt038 I wish all divers had the courage to call DAN or go to a chamber when something goes wrong. Like you, I've had skin bends (on the arms). Now, if I have any doubts about my health, hydration, or the diving conditions, I breathe nitrox but use air tables for NDLs. Just that m...

Re: So if i wanted a job as a diver....
What kind of commercial diving do you want to do? Going to commercial diving school may not be necessary for some types of jobs. Many people around here (Port Townsend) clean hulls, recover anchors, slurp out geoducks, and install anodes. Very few of them have any kind of commercial cert. Some just ...

Re: Diving Thailand
One idea would be.... probably fly into Bangkok and adjust. Then hop the over night train to Chumpon. From Chumpon take the ferry to Koh Tao. From Koh Tao I would take the ferry south to Koh Phangan then to Koh Samui. Samui back to the mainland (Surat Thani) via ferry. From there a quick bus ride t...

Re: Regulator Service ... Wisdom Needed
The Resolution...... I called the shop and had a good conversation (or as good as we could have under the circumstances). They sincerely apologized and offered to refund the cost of the service. I think that's the best possible solution, so I'm going to consider the matter closed. ......But in the f...

Re: Regulator Service ... Wisdom Needed
A good service tech will have no problem having customers watch while they perform their magic. I agree with your comments, however there is no 'magic'. With the right tools, parts, information, and determination, anybody can service their own regulators. I doubt any technician will ever give my li...

Regulator Service ... Wisdom Needed
I am seething. I just paid a lot of money to have a reg professionally serviced, and the results have been disappointing and dangerous . This was done via mail to a shop I have used before, usually with good results. I started using them a few years ago after some other shops screwed things up. Here...

Crescent Lake is Waaaaarm
I was hanging out near the lodge at Crescent Lake today, planning on a little snorkel. All I had was a 3mm wetsuit (no drysuit), but the water was so warm I threw on the scuba gear and went for a shallow dive. It was glorious! NO DRYSUIT. NO WEIGHTBELT. NO NUTHIN'. (Okay, well I was wearing the 3mm ...

Re: What's the biggest egg yolk jelly you have seen?
We saw two huge ones at Sund rock last thursday. The bell on one was close to 2' across. Oh and he left me a reminder that getting too close to the pretty jelly is not a good idea. I was there with Dusty2 and I saw it too. It was scary big, as wide across as my forearm is long, and tentacles dangli...

Re: Where to do my DM?
Koh Tao. Big Blue (my recommendation) on Koh Tao should be able to do it for you, cheap. Thailand is one of the friendliest, funnest countries you will ever visit. I'd like to go back just to eat more Thai food! Don't listen to any nay-sayers. Learning to be a dive master improved my own skills, as ...

Re: NOAA likes us better
The approach to the harbor has been mentioned as a concern. But really, hydrographic ships like the Fairweather and Rainier come and go just a few times each year, spending most of their time up in Alaska (or down for maintenance in the case of the Fairweather :la: ). I expect they'll continue to us...

Re: Help finding the reefs at Rockaway
It's usually not too current sensitive... but it can happen. We were going to surface swim down to Metridium Wall one time but the currents nixed that idea. We ended up doing Norrander's Reef, and staying low. It's a lot more fun when there's little or no current at all. So I suggest picking a day w...

Re: Help finding the reefs at Rockaway
Say the word! I'm around quite a bit and [usually] have a flexible schedule. Kim likes doing it on a high tide; I don't really care, but it does make things easier -- not as much slogging over slippery rocks. We like to spend the safety stop... and many more minutes... exploring the shallow areas. V...

Re: Help finding the reefs at Rockaway
A.K.A., Norrander's Reef. Rockaway is the name of the adjacent city park. Last time I was there, there were a couple of buoys. Swim to the nearest buoy offshore from the park and follow the anchor line down, then look for a rope along the bottom leading out. The rope should guide you to the reef. Fr...

Ediz Hook, Port Angeles
Dive Site Name: Ediz Hook, Port Angeles, Washington Skill Level: All levels. Important Note: Ediz Hook is a long sand spit with many possible locations for diving. Re: Dungeness Bay and Crescent Bay
"Got crabs?" "Not yet!" Maybe try Port Angeles, inside the bay at Ediz Hook? Even if you don't find any good crabs it's a better dive. Easy entry, no current. Hmmm... I don't see a listing in the "Dive Site" forum for Ediz. I think I might have to make one.

Re: Thermo "Pro" Din/K Valve Water Retention
All you have to do to get the water out is open the valve slightly before you hook it up to the fill whip. This should be done on EVERY tank before filling... Of course. But on this particular type of valve that technique is apparently insufficient. Maybe the small hole is a water drain for the gap...

Thermo "Pro" Din/K Valve Water Retention
I have been told that this kind of valve needs to be specially cleared of water before you fill the tank. As it was shown to me, you do this by partially plugging the outlet with your hand, open the valve, and small amounts of water will spray out a tiny hole on the side. And indeed, that is what ap...
