Re: Advice needed for Weight Training for Scuba

Greeting, I'm the original poster (OP). Thanks for everyone's suggestions (and for keeping the topic active by broadening the topic). I thought folks might enjoy a short-term follow up. I've started Coach Izzy's Scuba Diving Fitness: Kettlebells for a Fit Diver . Because kettlebells are novel to me,...

Re: Whidbey Island Critters

I was surprised to learn that, in an evolutionary sense, brown algae are not plants. Plants, animals, fungi, and brown algae each evolved multicellularity independently of each other and consequently have very different cell structures. People, plants, and brown algae are -- as far as we know -- equ...

Re: Advice needed for Weight Training for Scuba

Thanks for everyone's responses to my query. I also run, so that gives me good cardio, but "Tyrannosaurus rex"-like spindly arms. I notice the lack of strength mostly moving tanks, etc.. So, while I aspire to improve my strength generally, I figure why not focus on strength that will make ...

Advice needed for Weight Training for Scuba

Can anyone suggest books, articles, or other info on weight training for our cold-water beach diving? What do you do? I've resolved to start weight training again and figure I'll focus on getting stronger for beach diving. So far, the best thing I found on the Internet was this (from https://www.div...

What is Jabba the Hutt?

We saw this at Edmonds, today. He's about 6 inches in diameter. Anyone know what it is?

KCTS on Sea Star Wasting

"During the height of the sea star die-offs in 2014, millions of stars up and down the West Coast were wasting away. At the same time, sea surface temperatures in the northeast Pacific Ocean were the warmest recorded in decades. In a new study published Monday, scientists are confirming that wa...

Derck,

What are we seeing in your second picture? It looks like a reflection.

Just one of my GoPro stills, but my 2015 favorite --
Nanci (nv77) tutoring a rockfish in swimming. (During the school year, Nanci tutors 7th graders in math).

Re: GoPro Macro Images

Jeremy, I do have a GoPro with a LCD screen on back. I like the screen, but it's so small it's of limited use when judging exposure (or focus). I think some settings do help with exposure: Protune and color=flat - their cost is that you need to process the video more after the dive. Also, we'll just...

GoPro Macro Images

Greetings, I just got a +15 Macro lens (and "Flip 4" system) from Backscatter.com for my GoPro. I thought others might be interested in the results. BigOne5.jpg Nudi4.jpg MoreShrimp2.jpg This is from Edmonds, yesterday. The nudibranch is in 35 fsw and the other two are in 20 fsw. The lens ...

Re: Whidbey Island Critters

I love the way ratfish swim by flapping their fins like a bird.

Also, I find it cool that ratfish are first cousins to sharks. So, a goldfish is more closely related to a (land) rat than it is to a ratfish.

100's of jumping shrimp at Alki Cove 2

Diving Tuesday in Cove 2, we "flew" low over the shrimp. Some just watched us. Others jumped away. It was hard not to laugh. How do they propel themselves so fast? 18 second video. Best in HD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6T7HWTJ1wlc I forgot the magenta filter for my Go Pro, so I lost ...

(Also, this sea anemone seems to have a transparent tongue. Is that normal?)

Re: Lost-ish at Edmonds: Where were we?

Why didn't you follow an established line? All the junk, umm I mean habitat, is along the lines or adjacent to them. Good question. We thought "North from Yellow #2" would be a sensible shortcut on the way to Glacier way. But finding the lines as we crossed them was too hard and Edmonds w...

Lost-ish at Edmonds: Where were we?

We dove Edmonds yesterday morning in about 5 to 10 ft of viz. We could use your help confirming where we were. We descended at the 2nd Jetty Way buoy (Yellow) and swam North for 20-25 minutes. Turned 180 degrees and returned. (Our primary plan was to swim to and follow the Centennial way line, but w...

LCF, Thanks!

I'd love to see a sonar image. (And, of course, someday, when someone creates an updated map, that will be much appreciated.)
