Re: tiny hands.. need gloves..

I use these one's from Amazon over my rings, and I love them. They're a little on the thin side, so prolly not the best for crabbing or spearfishing, but they are reasonably tough. They also give me decent dexterity for hitting camera buttons, and after a little bit of practice I can put them on by ...

Re: Sea star die-off

Not sure if you're also interested in news from further south, but a couple of weeks ago my group found signs of wasting in pinks and sunstars in Yaquina Bay (Newport, Oregon). This is especially a concern for the Oregon Coast Aquarium, as they (and the Hatfield Science Center) get their water from ...

Re: Dry Glove Liners

I'm with Lynn on the OR gloves- they're really too thin because what we need is loft. I've also used fluffy gloves I've got at the dollar store, but what I'm using right now are Columbia Omniheat gloves- there's enough fleece for loft, and the metallic lining seems to help them keep enough structure...

Re: Cutting tool on camera rig?

Glad I'm not crazy. I have a dive watch for depth/time on my focus light, so why not a cutter on the tray? I figured I'd ask in case I was missing something. By the way, I have my shears in a sheath on the waist strap, attached to a D-ring with a really light duty retractor. That way stowing it isn'...

Cutting tool on camera rig?

Just wondering if anyone keeps a cutting implement on their camera rig. I figured it's as good a place as any for a third one as I'm not getting in the water without a camera, and it'd be easier to to re-sheath it if it was on an object that I could see clearly (not like getting it back into a sheat...

Bay goby?

After seeing Jan's latest post, I got to wondering about a fish I saw at Mike's Beach Resort on a night dive a couple of weeks ago. I thought for sure it was a blackeye, but I've been wrong before. Any thoughts?

Re: Oregon Dive Sites

If you head south you have a few more options as far as shore dives. Port Orford in particular is pretty nice as it's actually an ocean dive as opposed to an estuary. There's a few beach dives from Coos Bay on down, but they're obviously weather dependent. One place I think is underrated is the Winc...

Lightroom 4 or 5?

After struggling with the clunkiness of the Olympus software that came with my E-PL2, I'm wanting to upgrade to Lightroom. I can pick up 4 for about half the price of 5- is it worth it to spend the extra money upfront? In theory, if 6 comes out next summer, I can spend the difference then and upgrade.

My only visit to Waldo was a dive in 2010. Unbelievable viz- even better than Clear Lake. There wasn't much to see, at least where we dove.

Not too late to swim with kokanee

Our group visited Crescent Lake up Hwy 58 over the weekend- plenty of kokanee right near the lodge. After swimming with the fishes, one of our friends described this as a "bucket list dive". It's that cool. The lodge also has good food and beer on tap- makes for a great day.

Dive For A Cure this Saturday

If you're looking for something to do this weekend, join us at the Woahink gazebo in Florence for the annual Dive For A Cure event. It's a lot of fun, even if it is for charity. Activities include a fin race, rubber ducky race, bean bag toss, underwater poker run, raffles, silent auction, free hambu...

Re: Anyone drive a jeep?

I've got a 4 door Wrangler, and I love it. Right now it's sitting in the parking lot at work but all 4 doors and the back part of the hard top are collecting cobwebs at home. It can comfortably scuba drive 2, and 3 in a pinch. 4 is theoretically possible but would really be pushing it. I try not to ...

Vitamin R still has it's place, as do some of our other regional white trash American Lagers: Hamms, Oly, etc. They hit the spot on a hot summer day- think of them as old school session brews :partyman:
