Re: Down the memory line

Okay, tell us more about the mermaid.... Well, she was a member of our diving club from the tender age of 15 and her enthusiasm for diving and her wonderful personality and willingness to be part of the group and do more then her share of hard work in and out of water, made her the perfect buddy. Y...

Re: Down the memory line

Thanks , but as you can see from these pages, it is always a team effort - the credit goes to lot of other people .... I just happen to be in the right place at the right time .... I did carry my scuba gear aboard the Christian Rose ( and every other boat I have been on) so it was only natural to ju...

Re: Hey Jan ...

Great shot Bob ! It sure took you less time find the Sapsucker then it took me too see my first Lumpsucker. I have yet to see one little bigger then the tiny babies I found at Keystone. Now you will find the Sapsuckers much more frequently, since you know what to look for. It was that way with me......

Re: Whidbey Island Critters

At the Keystone Jetty, I am having more luck finding juvenile PS King crabs then the Scaly crabs, they hide from me inside the Plumose anemone forest. This youngster was for some reason out in open, away from them. The Scalyhead sculpins sure took lot of interest in this crab . http://jankocian.smug...

Re: Down the memory line

Well thank you, I didn't realize there was such interest in "old man's ramblings". Here are few snapshot from my first taste of seafaring on low budget. I was lucky to find an experienced sailor who was not afraid to take three total greenhorns on a sea voyage for exchange for work on his ...

Re: My 100th Dive! (and 101th)

Congratulations! 100 - Wow, you are raking in the dives in an amazing pace. And look at your pictures, they are great too :supz: I am afraid that REEF is not much into nudibranch ID. You might have to invest into a book.. Or post it here, Dusty and others are pretty good in that field.

Re: Down the memory line

Jan, you have to tell us your stories!!!!!!! hear, hear! we want details, man, details! Once upon a time ...:) I know it sounds corny, but it was the little book called "The Silent World" which is responsible for my obsession with diving. Unfortunately, growing up behind the Iron Curtain ...

Re: Cabezon's snack

The Cabezon was not about let its "Gunnel on the Stick" snack go when I found the two on Langley Tire Reef yesterday : So the orange belly gunnel that became the Cabezon's snack is a Crescent Gunnel not a Longfin? I saw tons of them at Langley Tire Reef yesterday. They have an orange bell...

Re: Whidbey Island Critters

Many of the Lion's Mane Jellyfish end up their lives as gelatin like blobs on the beach. At Keystone on Saturday, the strong southerly winds churned up the shallows speeding up their demise :( http://jankocian.smugmug.com/Other/New-Arrivals/102310-lion-mane-S/1063294933_iakBD-XL.jpg There were about...

To have that written record in later years is invaluable. Especially when you have a lousy memory like I have :) The logs helped me to connect some of the old photos with places and dates. Jan that's amazing! Did your brother continue with diving the way you did? Thanks, glad you like it. Unfortunately, my brother was killed in a car accident returning from Cave Diving seminar in Florida back in 1970...He was much better diver then I am.. I sure miss him , this is sort of a tribute t...

Down the memory line

Since the winds and rain keep me inside, I though I share with you some of the memories. Diving was little different then, growing up behind the Iron Curtain with no access to "stuff" we had to improvise and do with what we could make ourselves. There is a exhibit of some of that "anc...

Collecting Ciona savignyi

The invasive tunicate Ciona savignyi is not gaining on locals in the Lagoon Point canal. Yesterday I helped collecting samples for the ongoing study and found that there are many fewer invaders there then couple years ago. Lets hope it stays that way, when only few of them hang onto the Feather dust...

Nice Jan. I'd like to know how you got that kelp greenling to sit still. All I ever get is butt shots even if I hold my breath & pretend I'm not looking. I saw a bunch of the feather dusters too but didnt pull of a decent shot of even one. The purple got washed out on me. having trouble with th...
