Re: I took an octo at les davis!
A couple years ago we had a similar encounter with a red inside a snorkel we found at Langley. Didn't notice till we were gearing down in the parking lot and saw it crawling out. We weren't sure how to handle it, but having heard that they liked the warmth of our hands, I put mine down next to it. T...

Re: Nice article/post about offshore Oregon diving.
We'll dive the jettys periodically, but from we're told it's just a sandy bottom offshore. I'd still like to try it sometime, but my brothers are usually more interested in diving for groceries, which makes us look for more interesting topography. Typically we'll choose between Newport or Charleston...

Re: Nice article/post about offshore Oregon diving.
Glad you guys liked the article- I'm the author, and it was fun to write about one of my favorite trips of the summer. I know what you mean about the conditions coming together for a weekend. It sure is frustrating, but when it works out, the diving is something else. We're based out of Eugene so Ti...

Re: Mikes Beach
Piling on- the accomodations aren't the fanciest, but the diving is great. I'll add to Jeff's comment about wolfies- I've actually seen them around the resort, but the Flagpole deep reef is just crawling with them. Also, some friends of mine were on a trip earlier this year, and a 6-gill was sighted ...

I'm down in Oregon, so I'm not too familiar with the fisheries up there. That said- could your bigger fish have been pikeminnows?

Re: saturday port townsend the ranger and fox island wall
I've had a couple of great dives on the Ranger- I think it's an under-rated site as there's not a lot of wreck dives of that caliber with such easy shore access...

Re: Joining the 21st century- must-have apps?
Good question on the tide app. I've just used Navionics, but it only lets you look a few days out. If I'm planning further out than that I'm on my laptop so it hasn't been a problem. Speaking of Navionics, I used it over the weekend to pick out a dive site offshore out of Newport. Pretty slick- foun...

Joining the 21st century- must-have apps?
My job provided me a nextel / phone for the last 10+ years, and it was so limited I couldn't even text with it. But hey, free is free. Long story short, they're now paying for data service on a shiny new iphone 4s 64gb. Now that I've gotten over the lack of a retractable antenna, I've started downlo...

Re: Bend, OR diving
Clear Lake is about an hour away, and is one of the best fresh water dives in the Northwest. 100'-plus of viz, 3,000 yr. old trees, easy access, etc. The challenges are that you'll only see upper 30's for water temp, and the fact that it's an altitude dive. If you can time it for a full moon night d...

Saw these swimming through the water column at Port Orford, OR last weekend. Sometimes individually, sometimes in "schools". None of my books show this, so any help is appreciated. BTW, recommendations for a better invert book is also appreciated.

Re: Orcas at Orford
That wasn't any of us, fortunately. Makes you appreciate the Coast Guard, that's for sure. We'd love to get our boat out there but we don't have lift eyes- we'll have to see if they can still cradle / sling boats off the crane. We drug ours down for the weekend, and tried getting out at both Brookin...

Orcas at Orford
A whole slew of Eugene folks headed down to Port Orford for the weekend. Just after one group got out and just before my brothers and I got in, 2 adult and 2 juvenile killer whales cruised through the cove next to the marina. If you've ever did the shore dive there, they swam right through the slot ...

Re: Fish ID help
Here's a similar fish I saw at Netarts- it also has kind of a forward slant to the bars, and fewer white spots than some of the ones I've seen in other areas. Two of my REEF buddies disagreed on mine- one said juvie Kelp Greenling, the other said White Spotted. I think White Spotted, and I'm hoping ...
