Re: Narcosis

Maybe my TDI instructor cheated, but I was not required to do extended range before Trimix. On a side note, I did extended range anyways as we were in nice warm blue water. Albeit, a bit on the smart ass side, I would say that no one is REQUIRED to do extended range before Trimix. If you don't want ...

Re: Always analyze your gas!

We had a tech instructor die recently in Florida on the Hydro Atlantic. I have not seen the official report, but the word is, he had his shop he works at fill the tanks with air. Problem was, somehow, that air turned into 36 percent. He convulsed at approx 165 feet and died shortly thereafter at the...

Langley Tire Reef, now this :( It was such a great place to dive ... Sharks cove on the north shore is a popular spot, but this time of year, if can be a bit rough up there.

Re: Trimix vs rebreather

I found out they operate a membrane, so that is a cost reducer (after the initial cost). I have no doubt they are also betting on the constant flow of tourists to use them for a few weekends and then stop. IMO, the biggest percentage of the diving population only goes diving a few times a year... Un...

Re: Trimix vs rebreather

I'm getting a quote on industrial o2 now from air gas. We will see what shakes out. On a lighter note, Aaron's dive shop in Kailua just announced their new membership plan... 100 bucks a year, 75 for military and you get 2 free fills of 32 or 36 every day, 7 days a week. I called and spoke with the ...

Re: Trimix vs rebreather

Koos and Richard, THANKS. Great info here on HE and 02.

I just priced UHP here in Hawaii and the cheapest I can find is 490 bucks a bottle!!!

Likewise, ABO is 145 a bottle. Painful.

In gonna check the lower grades.

Re: Trimix vs rebreather

Trimix costs are not too bad if you mix your own (relatively speaking against paying retail). I have a set of dedicated hp dubs for trimix and they usually come home with at least 1500 psi in them. It costs me anywhere from 25 to 40 bucks to get them ready for the next dive, depending on mix. Dusty,...

Re: Best boat tank holders for Doubles???

I use the plain old roll control brackets, for single tanks and just bungee the isolation valve.

Works well in 3-5 foot seas... When I get the hankering to dive in those conditions.

Re: Interesting article from John Chatterton

It seems to me that what he said was that if someone tried to take his reg, or tried to jump him for it, on a deep dive that he would fight you. This to me is not unreasonable. At the depths he is talking about this divers training has failed, he has slipped into panic, and is a huge risk that must...

Re: Interesting article from John Chatterton

It is quite realistic.... That picture certainly isnt. but there is no reason to not carry enough gas for two people on a 200, or even 300 ft dive. Or more. You don't have to dress up like a clown to carry that much gas either. Mortus , can I ask how many dives you have done to 200 or 300 feet? How...

Re: Interesting article from John Chatterton

I also feel that a key word has been overlooked in Johns original post... Intentionally or not. That word is "jumps". Ask any man what actions he will take if someone "jumps" him. The only honest answer is "fight or flight". This applies to any environment... Surface or...

Re: Interesting article from John Chatterton

The dive John was referring to in the blog.... He was on OC.

He may very well be diving CC at times but the decompression dives I have done with him and the recent expeditionary 200-250 foot dives he has been doing are on OC.

Brendan, when in March will you be here?

I'm on the island and looking for a house. My boat "should" be here by then. Hopefully I will be settled and running by then.

Re: Fun on 18/45

Much like the PNW, some of the best visibility days here are in the winter. We have been blessed over the last month or so with 3/4 of the dive days having well over 100 foot of vis. Unfortunately, the seas are pretty much a constatnt 2 to 4 feet.

Fun on 18/45

A few days ago, 4 of us dove the Johnny Morris wreck. She is 220 feet deep and we were all on 18/45. We all had scooters and with over 100 foot of vis and not much current, I wanted to get a shot of 3 scooters passing along side of the wreck. Unfortunately, I did not discuss this with anyone until w...

If you build it, they will come.

If you spend any amount of time in South Florida, you eventually get to meet some of the diving pioneers. My good friend Frank and I started a Meetup group www.meetup.com/stroke for his boat... and sometimes mine. There just wasn't a club like NWDC (down here) where we could get our dives organized ...
