Re: Leftover Guide Lines in Lake Crescent

I think the first 3000' or so off the East Beach was put in by Dathan sometime before 2007 (some bit rot may have occurred in my memory in the past 7 years so I might be incorrect). I don't know if its been maintained since then but it used to zigzag from 70' to 30' like crazy. I think there was als...

Re: Shearwater Petrel GF Settings

My takeaway is that I really need to think about what GFs to set per dive. It sounds like, within recreational limits/times, I can dive GF100/100 theoretically and be fine. I would suggest not. For "shallower" recreational dives it probably doesn't matter since you probably won't hit the ...

Re: Shearwater Petrel GF Settings

recreational tables are sort of GF 100/100 -- pure buhlmann. since that is overly aggressive, they typically include 'mandatory safety stops' (3 mins of deco) at 15 feet for 100-130 foot dives and similar. i believe the padi tables note that somewhere. you can adjust the petrel to 100/100 in which c...

Wow. Well, let me welcome you to the plastic surgery / basal cell carcinoma club... Although you got it a lot worse than me, mine was on top of my head, scar is completely hidden by hair... Chicks dig scars, though, and you gotta come up with a good story about the bar fight you got into with a enti...

Re: WDFW news re: octopuses

Good point Cap'n Jack, but I don't hunt in popular areas. Most folks don't for the reasons stated. I just see it as yet another incremental attack on our ability to put food on the table in a manner we see fit. There is no best available science to support it. You say this, yet later you are cool w...

Re: This promises not to be much fun

I had this mole on the top of my head at least since i was in high school. Everyone who looked at it said it was just a mole, no biggie. It got bigger and became noticeable. Went into a cosmetic surgeon to have it removed and the surgeon looked at it and concurred with all who went before him that i...

Re: Missing diver off Blakely Rocks

Speaking strictly for me, I can't imagine a situation on a recreational dive site that would prevent me from assisting a diver to the surface. Abandoning him on the bottom is a death sentence, and speaking strictly for me, I'd go to extraordinary lengths to make sure that didn't happen. At this par...

Re: Water refusing to emancipate itself from my ears

+20, first year of diving i had this a bunch. if you get to the point where you feel significant pressure on your ears when you're descending, and then you valsalva somewhat hard and it "pops" that is usually enough to give you middle ear barotrauma -- which leads to squishy water-in-ears ...

Re: Drysuit Training - BCD, Suit or Both.

On OC, i'll tend to use my drysuit first and my wing second. So I'll be dumping or adding every couple feet with the drysuit, but then shifting gas between the wing and drysuit about 10 feet give or take. Also shifting gas to either inflate the drysuit and warm up, or sometimes with the suit heater ...

This might help for how to route it: http://www.baue.org/images/equip/diverfrontshare.jpg The long hose is coming down behind the divers right wing, it tucks under the can light (this is where you tuck it into the waist strap instead if you don't have a can light, just make a little bite and stuff i...

So apparently we're in violent agreement, then, but you just need to pontificate about how you're the only one addressing "the perspective of the majority." Violent agreement, I like that. I never said I was the only one addressing anything. I never said anything about the majorities pers...

Re: WDFW GPO update: Seacrest Cove 1,2,3 now included in opt

One diver, one time, took one octo from one site. No, this has happened before at Les Davis and at DIW. In both cases, we suspect that the hunters were doing their 'hunting' online and when they saw divers posting reports/photo/vid they showed up an took the octo(s). Not exactly 'sporting', which i...

Just because no one was cited or went to jail doesn't mean no law was broken. Your assumption that since no one was cited or went to jail must mean no laws were broken reveals your ignorance. Your sarcasm aside, free speech has limits. You cannot yell fire in a theater (unless there's a fire). Taki...

So what in this whole mess really warrants scientific study and analysis? Are you serious? WDFW, laws and regulations for an entire state, managing a natural resource for all the public to enjoy, protecting a species, thousands of divers and tens of thousands of fishermen, and the legal consequence...

Re: WDFW GPO update: Seacrest Cove 1,2,3 now included in opt

Correction - It's not a "loophloe", it's a standard procedure that has been in place for years. It's a procedure that has been applied to any and all rule changes (immediate emergencies excluded). H&L fishermen, spearos, and all other sportsmen have had to play by this rule every time...

Re: WDFW GPO update: Seacrest Cove 1,2,3 now included in opt

I think both B and C options were written by committee and aren't very well thought out. So far I only know of three areas where photogs and hunters have come into conflict over GPOs - cove 2, les davis, and DIW. I'm not sure why the rest of the areas are included in option C. And I don't see option...

Re: GPO Input needed!

Lets see if I can put it this way... If the hunting community allows for some areas to become restricted for GPO catch, then what they're buying with that is that the next time a diver comes out of the water at a site where that is permitted and someone snaps a photo and it hits social media, they'r...

Re: GPO Input needed!

I don't disagree that this is more an emotional debate than it is about conservation, remember that there is a 1catch per day limit on octos. Heck, I'm even in favor of turning Cove 2 into a reserve, I will admit that I got caught up in the hysteria following the Alki Octo Incident... but I am star...

Re: GPO Input needed!

Re: GPO Input needed!

I was at Les Davis DM'ing a class that day. But that diver and his partner brought the octopus out of the water in a game bag. When it was politely explained to him that it was a tacky thing to do during the middle of the day while there were dive classes going on and that since he owned a boat he ...
