Re: Newbie questions about gear
Actually, I was just thinking about that. I won't be dive-ready (still waiting on paperwork for my PADI card and getting my tanks next Saturday) but I would love to come down and meet you guys and just get acquainted. Will bring my gear as well so you can see what I'll be diving with, get recommenda...

Re: Newbie questions about gear
The Monday dive fits my work schedule, so I will definitely be down for that in the near future! Sadly I work Wednesday nights and can't do those dives. In a couple days I will find out what my schedule will be for next year, so that may change. I agree that I am definitely at a critical juncture he...

Success!

Currently out of stock, but I put it on a wish-list.
Worse comes to worse, the thrift stores are full of fanny-packs I could re-purpose! Hmm......

Re: Newbie questions about gear
So, I am almost completely set up with my basic gear and just down to the little things and figuring out some details. Here is today's question- Accessories like flashlight, writing slate, camera, etc.... where do they go?? I bought a BP/W style BCD and it has plenty of rings to attach stuff and 2 w...

Re: Newbie questions about gear
As I am slowly starting to acquire gear (as my budget allows) I am left with a question about tanks. At some point I will be buying some tanks (hp100's most likely), but until then I am hoping there is a dive shop that will rent just the tanks? And if so, what is the approximate going rate? I got th...

Re: The Bottle Thread
Here are a couple weird bottles I have sitting around. Always been curious how they started life. bottles.JPG bottles (8).JPG bottles (2).JPG bottles (4).JPG bottles (7).JPG bottles (5).JPG bottles (6).JPG The brown bottle and clear bottle are both smaller than my hand. The green bottle is close to ...

Re: Looking for an inexpensive/free Small Westsuit
There's a whole rack of them at the Goodwill in Edmonds. About $30 apiece if I remember right. They all seemed to be in decent shape and about the size you're looking for. A bit of a drive from Bellevue, but if you happen to be in the area....

Re: Newbie questions about gear
Oh, absolutely. As a *brand new* diver my first order of business is to get accustomed to diving, practice the skills that I've learned, focus on being a good dive buddy, and work on my buoyancy control. 4 short open-water dives and some pool time are virtually nothing experience-wise. I feel like I...

Re: Newbie questions about gear
I've noticed a few sellers that state in their ads that they will refund if the tank is no good.
I am keeping my eyes open for tanks that are "ready to dive". I know the right deal will come my way when the time is right

Re: Newbie questions about gear
Good advice on the camera. That's pretty much where my head was at, too. I am all about mastering the basics before I start adding "accessories" (but the camera housing was a pretty cheap and easy decision. I know I will use it later) Drysuit is definitely on my shopping list and I'm keepi...

Re: Newbie questions about gear
I will try to make it down to a couple dives when my work schedule allows. I know it would be a good education in gear and also seeing how experienced divers do things (procedures, buddy checks, etc...) All stuff I learned in class, but sometimes that stuff is different in the real world. I still ha...

Re: Newbie questions about gear
Great info everyone! Sounds like the 100's will be what I want tank-wise. Will start saving up for a drysuit (I've seen some pretty good deals, but none in my size....yet). So, I saw an ad with a "semi-dry" suit. Is that when it springs a leak? :) I had never considered the backplate/wing ...

Newbie questions about gear
So, I am keeping my eyes open for some decent used gear to get me started. Drysuit might be nice someday, but wetsuit should suffice for a while. I know what fits me, so this one is pretty easy to figure out. The questions I have are mainly about BCD's and tanks. Tanks first- Size is pretty self-exp...

Re: Brand new diver
Well, yesterday I had a bit of success!! Filled the bathtub with cold water (60 deg) and was able to duplicate my problem. I am using mask and snorkel. I found that even holding my breath, somehow that water just goes straight up my nose and into my stomach! If I scrunch my face up (like I just foun...

Re: Brand new diver
Thanks Jeff, I was wondering about that. I will try the giant mixing bowl with 50 deg water.
(don't think I could get the hot tub that cold!)

Re: Brand new diver
Norris, I do know what you are trying to explain....I have tried to explain it to people as well. I have become very familiar with the "mechanics" of how the sinus passage is closed off and can do it at will. That's what has me so befuddled with this...I can successfully do this in a home ...

Re: Brand new diver
Well, good news is I finished my 4 dives! They were amazing and I love the Edmonds underwater park....can't wait to get back there! Bad news is....I failed one of my skills. :( I have been fighting like hell with getting water up my nose during any kind of mask removal! It was an issue in the pool, ...

Re: Brand new diver
Well, 2 down and 2 to go! Did my first open water dives at Cove #2 today. I was a little apprehensive going in that I might be too cold or uncomfortable at depth, but that all disappeared quickly! Wetsuit was nice and comfy and the depth didn't bother me a bit (other than messing with my buoyancy wh...

Re: Brand new diver
Jeremy- Awesome! I am learning there are a bunch of divers in the area. As I was sourcing out all my basic gear from Craigslist (mask, snorkel, fins, gloves, booties) it turned out one guy lives literally at the end of my street! Small world moment, for sure! Norris- I checked out the standing weekl...

Re: Brand new diver
One of the funnier moments for me in this class was when a classmate asked me if I had any friends that dive. After a moment's thought and a "no"....the lightbulb came on and I realized that this is not a solitary activity! Definitely felt like a "cart before the horse" moment! S...

Re: Brand new diver
I am definitely considering the AOW next. Figure I will take a little time to really get a feel for my skills and get comfortable within my 60ft limit. I have seen posts from Bob and he comes across like a pretty awesome guy.
I appreciate the pointer!

Brand new diver
Hi everyone! I am currently being introduced to the wonderful world of diving by getting my open water cert. So far I have my classroom and pool sessions done, just waiting do my open water dives this weekend! Reading through some of the forums here (and elsewhere) has been an eye-opener. I see from...
