Objective Strength Measurement
In my quest to get back in the water I think I am objectively strong enough for at least warm water recreational diving. I have no trouble carrying weight equivalent to that of warm water gear. Flexibility is actually a bit better than pre-trauma except for the lumbar spine. Even then the surgical t...

Re: Scientists solve mystery of West Coast starfish plague
Might be able to protect from the virus' consequences. But should we? As the piece points out, the virus has been in the starfish for a very long time with no ill effect. Maybe it actually is a built in population control that we interfere with at our peril. As far as we know every species has a cra...

Re: A thank you to Veterans
I can empathize with Old Salt's post. If it hadn't been for a helicopter pilot and crew breaking orders I wouldn't be here today. As I travel the phrase "Thank you for your service" is one I commonly hear. To be blunt that doesn't keep the snow and rain off. Those words don't fill the bell...

Re: Scuba diving with Respritory Laziness question.
As a fellow back injury person may I stick my nose in? It appears no two back issues are the same. If the manner in which nerves are impinged varies only slightly symptoms and signs can be significantly different. Add to that physiology variance between people and finding The answer to pain can be f...

No sweat Tom. We are having the same discussion that has been had for a lot of years between different people. Time will tell. In the meantime, his event didn't cost any of us a dime or a minute but it did motivate us to think a bit.

Re: new record
Tom, your opinion is the "other side" of most of history. Same things were said about the first people to fly, the first to fly supersonic, the first to climb Mt. Everest, the first to do a lot of things. Those who explored remote areas, and the ocean is pretty remote. Indeed there was lit...

He joins the ranks of lots of other pioneers who have carried human spirit forward and led the way for exploration. Expanding the frontiers has been the story in every other area.
Now that he has shown the way before we know it people will be following with methods to work and explore directly.

I forgot to say that I checked the book out from my local library via Overdrive. I figured my taxes had already purchased the electronic copy so why buy it again?

Interesting Book
Just finished a book that some may have already read. It is: "Deep" by James Nestor; Houghton, Mifflin, Harcourt Publishing.
It starts out with Freediving and rapidly moves to a commentary about the world's oceans and our relationship with them.
I found it interesting.

Re: Any Lawyers out there???
I'm not sure how it works for a DM, but as an instructor, you have a duty to act. F[/b]or instance, you aren't responsible for everyone on a boat charter, but if someone is doing something unsafe, you have a duty to inform that person of that fact. You aren't required to remedy the situation, but y...

Re: Advice on redundant computer
There is another very valid reason for two computers. Money. But they have to be running the same algorithm. When I spend the money and time to travel somewhere on a trip where iexpect 20-25 dives I don't want it interrupted by a computer problem. If, for whatever reason, one has a problem go with t...

As a person who came into scuba older than most and now making reservations to resume and dealing with the emotions involved I wonder if comments in this thread are more an expression of age and number of years diving than anything else.

There are people who pay good money to have multi-focal lenses inserted just so they don't have to wear glasses. They show it really isn't much of a risk. I know I like mine and not having to wear glasses for the past years.

Re: H20doctor Diving Vacation On Oahu
To add to the history of the Mahi: That is the place the owner of one of my favorite dive ops died. He was also the skipper of his company's dive boat. The way it was told to me is that he went overboard immediately after recovering the customers from their deep dive. He had weights on and went stra...

Re: SCUBA Up or Down Or?
Sort of a churn but stable overall is what I guess you are saying. In other areas I'm familiar with folks who started diving when I did in 1999 are no longer involved. They have "moved on" to other hobbies. Some of that is a factor of age and some money. Mostly I think it is a cultural cha...
