Re: Florence North Jetty
just keep a look out for swell... with anything less than 6' there are quite a few things to do on the south coast...e.g. diving from semi protected areas.... port orford jetty is the easiest and most reliable. there is a kelp bed directly in front. if more adventerous and have a boat, there are a n...

It's better the way it is... It is much different than the sound and it's not worth comparing... they both have good and bad points... I will agree that it is funny for whoever does this to promote two of the most lousy dives in the state :) They are both really easy in and out's, which is nice... i...

Re: Zodiacs and the Oregon Coast
Hi Scott - do you ever freedive for red abalone or spearfishing? I dove alot of humboldt and del norte this way with excellent results. I remember a spot north of brookings I dorve down a seriously rustic dirt road to get there and I just saw the sights but thought "wow, this could be great ab...

Re: Zodiacs and the Oregon Coast
Hello, I have a 14' zodiac. its great. I rarely make bar crossings though, mostly beach launches. I never have a tender, no real necessity for the dives i do. Get a really good anchor and start/ end there. I use a bruce that could probably keep a tug boat in place :)... those little danforths seem b...

Nice Jan!
we have one down here by the name of "Little Mama" a nice one that's been around for a good number of years. she's(/he's) skittish when you get in the water though. I have to say having a big gray thing fly by you is a little uncomfortable in this part of the pacific...

Re: A whatsit for Greg
Was this ever settled?
I looked at this photo with friend who has as much fish ID skills as anyone i know and a couple of books and we came up with English sole... what precluded that earlier?
the tail and lack of prominent ridge between eyes are enough for me to think it can't be a slender.

Re: A whatsit for Greg
not knowing much about the ID without them in hand, it looks more like a slender than an arrowtooth to me. both those have not much of a bump on their lateral line and are not wide bodied as in the photo... but it seems shallow for an arrowtooth. you didn't count upper gill rakers did you? :) flash ...

Re: Whidbey Island Critters
Yeah, I have no idea... I've ID'd a Aleutian and another (tranparent maybe?) moon snail in the past, both were from ~600' depth... and i think thats where they most probably live... however, on vague remembrence's they look roughly like yours.... kind of pinkish and dainty. I think the ID was relate...

Re: Whidbey Island Critters
Great snail shots Jan! How did you ID that as a Lewis's?... just curiosity, i've never seen a small one diving and am very jealous, always wonder where they are when they are that size. I've seen a number of the other moon snails, and the ID was tricky... wondered if you had something good or if you...

I can't imagine anyone would care, but i recently ingested the fact that the species name "wosnessenskii" is in honor of a Russian zooligical museum curator of the 1940's Ilya Voznesenski. Normall reserved, I could not pass up this oppurtunity to dispense this information, as i see no othe...

3 camera's flooded? I guess that's the number
that's what i did with canon housing before i gave up as well.
They are made for vacations or occasional diving, and are excellent for that.

Re: Strange looking fish at Saltwater State Park
Hi Janna, FWIW, i see coloration like that often, being as that i'm estuary diving so much... i can't honestly tell the white spotted's from the immature kelp greenling at quick glance... and (as you know) they are generally very skittish... so i've kind of given up... good factoid about the dashed ...

What strobe are you using, Scott? I went to your Smug Mug site and your pics are amazing! Well Thanks! and certainly, right back at you... How are those casio's? I've never used one, but you've certainly got some great results from them... I have a single Ikelite DS-125, I had some money burning a ...

Re: looking to upgrade my camera setup
Hi Bob, I have a G9 in an Ikelite case... it fits all the bills, aside from solving the strobe price issue you bring up. it's good to 200', accepts wet lenses (I have a WAL) and might look into getting a macro... and i would not do well at any level of Geekology. As said on the other thread, they've...

Re: anemone question
Yeah that helps Jan! i would imagine if it looked like that from a colonial living anemone than singular ones would be without that jelly stuff that keeps it all close and in a bunch. probably was gametes, my guess. Thanks again, Scott ps. one shot was in the winter and one in the summer, both in Or...

the last time i did it is fresh in my mind... there were several clown nudi's and those Nanimo dorids (watermelon dorids) or whatever they're called. was funny to see those because i had just posted wondering if anyone knew why they were in pairs pushing each other around then i found 3 pairs of the...

Very interesting Greg! Now THAT would be very cool to see! That's fascinating about the Rose Stars - I had never heard of anything eating nudi's - although if something did it figures that it would be a starfish. I have to admit, i've never spent anytime reading up on it, but i always had the impre...

I thought buffalo at first, but his head looked a different shape than usual?... shaped a little more sleekly, opercul spine not really obvious, and more bulgy eyed or something?.. It could be that i'm seeing things.
