Re: Coast Vis Recently

My brother and a friend dove Waldport last Friday night and had 6-10. I heard it was about the same at Newport the following day. For Oregon in the winter, the viz hasn't been too bad so far this year- most likely since we haven't had a lot of rain.

Re: E-PL1 Users Group

This thread and the one Peter Guy posted about the Adorama deal convinced me to stick a crowbar in my wallet; I ended up buying an E-PL2 from another user on this forum. I'm loving it already, and I can't wait to get better. Here's a couple of my favorite shots so far...

Oly E-PL1 and housing bundle

I bought the Adorama bundle but ended up buying an E-PL2 kit from another diver. Don't need both, so the E-PL1 / PT EP01 package is listed on e-bay, and it ends this evening. As noted on the auction, it also comes with the zoom gear and an extra battery. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Oly-PEN-E-PL1-with-PT...

Re: Outrageous Deal on Camera and Housing

Really thinking hard about this. Before I upgrade, I've got some questions for the experts here: -How much "growth" can we get out of these? Peter mentioned the dome, but what other lenses should we be thinking about? Diopters? Anything else? -I currently have a YS-02 strobe since my curre...

Re: New rock scallop reporting requirement

One other thing that I believe is new is that scallops are not be removed from the shell in the field, except for immediate consumption. My 2psi is that it would better to leave the shells as close to the taking point as possible because of all the organisms attached, but I don't make the rules.

Re: Opinion trawl!!!!

I made the video-light-must-be-the-best-of-both-worlds mistake a couple of years ago with the Sealife 980. It really wasn't enough light for stills, and it seemed that it scared the fish. I now have a strobe, and the video light is still on my rig- I aim it off to the side and use it as my primary d...

A pair of dive boats

I remember doing some casual internet searches to find ideas for setting up a dive boat, so I figured I’d payback the knowledge I gained by posting some shots of the two boats my group dives off of. First is an 18’ open tri-hull my brothers and I went in on together. Ugly White Boat has been in our ...

Re: Non current sensitive "off the beaten path" dive sites?

I got to thinking- some of the coolest rock structure I've seen has been in rivers. I have no idea what you washingonians have up there, but it might be worth looking into for late summer / early fall. There's current (duh), but it can be manageable and predictable. As an example, around here we div...

Re: Small fish in Lingcods mouth?

I'm not sure- we had different buddies. He mentioned it afterwards; he took some pics, but they didn't turn out too well. As an aside, I was surprised how big some of the lings were there- one of them looked like it could eat a small child.

Re: Small fish in Lingcods mouth?

I know this is an old thread, but it's as good a place as any to mention something my brother saw last weekend. We were diving the Pinnacle in Hood Canal when he found a squat lobster cleaning a ling. Any one else ever see something like this?

Re: Non current sensitive "off the beaten path" dive sites?

Last winter a few of us made some dives off the public boat ramp in Gig Harbor. Not the most exciting dives ever from a critter standpoint, but there were tons of different nudibranchs. It was mostly about bottles and the other sort of man-made detritus you'd expect in a muck dive. Might be worth a ...

Re: Yes, Virginia, there is diving in Oregon

From the Newport area north and from Charleston south you can find diving like that. I've never been lucky enough to get that good of visibility, but even with 10-ft of viz, the diving is spectacular. It's so hit or miss as to whether you can even get across the bars, though- more often than I'd lik...

Re: Dry suits... What do you dive?

I've got a USIA bag suit that I bought used for $500. I use the USIA undergarment that it came with, along with a thin performance-type shirt and bottom (mostly for moisture wicking if we're hiking or swimming a ways). That combo is fine for temps down to mid to low 40's. Colder than that, I add fle...
